Roman-Era Ink Reveals a Complex Mix of Carbon, Beeswax and Iron-Gall Components

A preserved ink residue inside a first-century CE bronze inkwell from Conímbriga, Portugal, appears to combine carbon-based black pigment with beeswax and additional components consistent with bone black and iron-gall ink. The finding documents one complex formulation—not a standard recipe used across the Roman world.

What did scientists find in the Roman inkwell?

The artifact is a Biebrich-type bronze inkwell found at Conímbriga, a Roman site in Portugal. The peer-reviewed study identifies the vessel type as characteristic of the first half of the first century CE and describes it as the first documented example of a Biebrich-type inkwell from the Iberian Peninsula. The paper appeared online on 4 November 2025 in Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences. Read the study record.

The study reports that the inkwell’s alloy contained copper, tin and lead. In the residue, researchers identified primarily amorphous carbon—carbon without a regular crystalline structure—derived from burned organic matter. They also identified beeswax, interpreted as a binder, alongside calcite and phosphate groups consistent with bone black and iron interpreted as evidence of iron-gall components.

What was this Roman ink made of?

The cautious summary is a carbon-based black ink with beeswax binder and mineral and iron-bearing evidence consistent with more than one additional ingredient or ink component. Chemistry World’s account gives a more specific interpretation: ash from pine and fir, charcoal from animal bones, and iron compounds associated with oak galls. That detailed ingredient list is the news report’s attribution; the study’s abstract describes the findings more conservatively as amorphous carbon, bone-black-consistent minerals and iron-gall components. Rohrer & Klingner 50 ml Bottle Fountain Pen Ink, Iron Gall Nut-Ink, Salix
  • 50ml bottle of classical iron gall writing ink suitable for pens, quills and other calligraphy instruments
  • Rohrer & Klingner inks are made from high-quality, brilliant colourants, specially treated water, and natural ingredients
  • Well-balanced composition makes for optimal smooth ink flow
  • Iron gall ink is permanent and intensifies when it oxidises in the air
  • Made in Germany

“Mixed ink” is therefore a useful description of the reported evidence, but it should not be mistaken for a complete, certain reconstruction of every ingredient or its original proportion. Chemical traces can support interpretations of a recipe without revealing a precise formula.

How did researchers identify the ingredients?

The analysis combined several complementary techniques rather than relying on the residue’s appearance or one isolated chemical signal. The researchers used X-ray fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy to examine elemental composition, alongside chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, analytical pyrolysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

That mix matters because an element on its own does not prove how it entered the ink. The study’s interpretation draws on multiple kinds of chemical evidence to distinguish likely components and supports a more nuanced reading than simply labeling the residue “carbon ink.”

Does this prove Roman ink contained iron gall?

It supports the presence of iron-gall components in this particular sample. It does not establish that all Roman ink contained iron gall, or that the Conímbriga recipe was typical. The authors present the find as a rare example of mixed ink at Conímbriga and as evidence relevant to the chronology, diversity and transmission of ink technologies in the Roman world.

Other Roman ink finds underline why recipes should be compared artifact by artifact. A 2021 study of dry black ink powder from a different first-century Roman bronze inkwell reported amorphous carbon and Arabic gum. It also found minerals and metal compounds that could have come from burial soil or degradation of the bronze container, rather than the original ink recipe. That sample is not the Conímbriga residue and should not be combined with it. Read the 2021 study.

Why does the discovery matter?

The residue links a specific, preserved ink formulation to an archaeological object and extends the documented distribution of a Biebrich-type inkwell to the Iberian Peninsula. It also adds evidence to a broader picture in which ancient inks could vary by place, period, materials and purpose.

For context, a 2020 study of Roman-period Egyptian papyri found lead compounds in both red and black inks and suggested that lead acted as a drier in those samples rather than as a pigment. Those papyri are a different material and archaeological context; their results do not show that lead was an ingredient in the Conímbriga ink. Read the PNAS study.
