How many amps does a Roku Stick need?
For the current Roku Streaming Stick, model 3840R, Roku specifies a 5-volt, 1-amp power input. In practical terms, use a 5V power source capable of supplying up to 1A. Roku lists typical consumption while streaming at about 2.2W; dividing 2.2W by 5V gives approximately 0.44A. Can I power my Roku Stick from my TV’s USB port?
Yes, a TV USB port may power a Streaming Stick, and Roku includes TV USB as a setup option. But some television ports do not provide enough power. If the stick displays a low-power or insufficient-power warning, Roku recommends connecting it to a wall outlet with a 5V/1A USB adapter. The message means the current power arrangement is not supplying enough power for the player to operate reliably. A TV USB port may be the limiting factor, but the cable, adapter, outlet, or device can also be involved. Try the supplied cable and a 5V/1A wall adapter first. If it still will not turn on, follow Roku’s troubleshooting steps to check the cable, adapter, outlet, and player rather than assuming the amp rating is the only possible cause.

Use the right cable and adapter
- Use the cable supplied with the stick. Roku warns that another cable may prevent some Streaming Sticks from turning on. On some 4K models, the cable may also incorporate a long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- For wall power, choose a 5V/1A USB adapter. This is Roku’s recommended response to a low-power warning.
- Check model compatibility before replacing a cable. Do not assume that any USB cable is interchangeable; Roku advises using the supplied cable. Its general setup instructions cover cable use and low-power setup.
Does the Roku Streaming Stick 4K need the same power?
Roku lists a 5V/1A input for the Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820R2) as well. Its product details say typical consumption while streaming 4K UHD video is below 3.5W. That figure is a typical-use specification, not a constant draw or a separate current measurement. Included cables and accessories can differ by model and generation, so use the cable supplied with your specific stick. Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K details list its specifications.
