If a Roku Smart Home camera, light, plug, doorbell, or monitoring device won’t work with Alexa or Google Assistant, first check whether it works in the Roku Smart Home app. If it does, focus on account linking, device discovery, or whether the command is supported. If it does not, troubleshoot the device’s power, Wi-Fi, and app setup before changing the assistant connection.
First, make sure you’re troubleshooting the right Roku product
Roku Smart Home devices and Roku streaming players or TVs use separate assistant integrations. The steps below apply to Roku Smart Home cameras, doorbells, lights, plugs, and monitoring devices—not to commands for launching streaming apps or controlling a TV.

For streaming players and TVs, Roku documents separate Alexa and Google integrations, with their own supported controls and limitations. See Roku’s guidance for controlling Roku streaming devices with voice assistants rather than trying to link a Smart Home device service.

Check where the failure occurs
Try the device in the Roku Smart Home app, then compare that result with the assistant:
#1 Best Overall

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- It also fails in the Roku Smart Home app: Start with device power, Wi-Fi, and local app setup.
- It works in the Roku app but the assistant can’t find it: Check the linked Roku account and run the assistant’s discovery or sync step.
- The assistant finds it but a command fails: Check whether that device supports the function and whether it has a special prerequisite.
This separates a local connection problem from an assistant-linking or command issue. It does not, by itself, rule out a temporary account or cloud-service fault.
Reconnect Roku Smart Home to Alexa
- Open the Alexa app and go to Skills & Games.
- Find and enable the Roku Smart Home skill.
- Sign in with the Roku account used for your Smart Home devices.
- Return to Alexa and allow it to discover devices. Make sure the Roku device is powered on.
- If the device is not available to select, open Manage devices from the Roku Smart Home skill screen and check the device list.
Roku’s setup instructions for this skill are available at Roku Smart Home: Control your devices with Amazon Alexa.

Reconnect Roku Smart Home to Google Assistant
- Open the Google Home app and start the Works with Google setup flow.
- Search for Roku, select the Roku service, and sign in to the Roku account that owns the Smart Home devices.
- Once linking is complete, ask Google to rediscover devices by saying: “Hey Google, Sync my devices.”
If accounts are already linked but the device is absent, try the sync command before unlinking and setting up the service again. Roku’s instructions are in Roku Smart Home: Control your devices with Google Assistant. That guide is served from Roku’s Mexico support locale; check the Google Home options available in your location if the flow or features differ.
If the device also fails in the Roku Smart Home app
Work through the local setup checks before changing assistant links. Roku’s app troubleshooting guidance covers the following:

- Confirm the device has power and check its status in the Roku Smart Home app.
- Check that your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and that Bluetooth is enabled when the setup process requires it.
- Verify internet access. For a wired device, also check its Ethernet connection.
- Connect the Smart Home device to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- On iOS 16 or later, allow the Roku Smart Home app to use the local network.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN during setup if it may be interfering with local discovery.
- If the app itself appears to be the problem, reinstall the Roku Smart Home app and try setup again.
These checks address device and app connectivity; they are not a guaranteed fix for a Roku-account or assistant-linking failure. See Roku Smart Home app connectivity troubleshooting for Roku’s instructions.
If you changed your Wi-Fi network
After changing routers, Wi-Fi credentials, or network equipment, Roku says to set up the Smart Home device again on the new network. Many models require a factory reset first, which removes settings and preferences. Reset procedures vary by model, so identify your device and follow its model-specific instructions at Roku Smart Home device Wi-Fi setup and reset guidance before resetting.

Make sure the command is supported
Finding a device does not mean every voice command is available for it. Roku documents assistant controls for Smart Home functions such as lights, plugs, camera or doorbell feeds, and home monitoring; exact commands and capabilities depend on both the device and assistant.
- Lights: Supported actions can include switching a light on or off and adjusting brightness or color, depending on the device.
- Cameras and doorbells: A live feed can be shown on a compatible Alexa or Google display. A display is needed for viewing the feed, not for fixing account linking or device discovery.
- Home monitoring: Disarming can have an additional security step. For Alexa, Roku says to enable voice disarm and configure its voice-code behavior. The Google instructions say a PIN may need to be spoken or entered.
- Other controls: Check Roku’s assistant instructions for the specific model and function instead of assuming a command supported by one assistant or device works on another.
For supported functions and security requirements, consult Roku’s Alexa instructions and Google Assistant instructions.

What to do if the usual steps don’t work
If the device works in the Roku Smart Home app, verify that you linked the same Roku account used to set it up, then repeat discovery in Alexa or sync devices in Google Home. If it appears in the assistant but a particular action still fails, confirm that the device supports that function and complete any required security setup. Avoid treating an untested third-party app or accessory as a guaranteed compatibility fix; Roku distinguishes its Smart Home ecosystem from products it has not officially tested.
