Roku says it does not charge for device activation, account creation, or support. A website, caller, or pop-up demanding money for any of those services is a major warning sign. Verify the web address, avoid unsolicited support numbers, and never give a stranger your password or computer access.
How to recognize a Roku scam
Scammers imitate Roku to charge for services Roku says are free. Fake sites may copy Roku branding, publish misleading setup articles, collect your phone number or email, and display fraudulent support numbers. Some buy search ads, so a result appearing prominently is not proof that it is genuine.

Searching for phrases such as “roku activation” or “roku link” is not itself unsafe; the destination and what it asks you to do matter. Check the full domain. Roku says its websites end in roku.com; navigate directly to Roku’s official scam guidance or its support site instead of relying on an ad, pop-up, or unsolicited message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Check | Warning sign | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | A lookalike address or a site that does not end in roku.com |
Close it and type a Roku address yourself. |
| Payment | A fee for activation, account creation, or Roku support | Do not pay; Roku says those services are free. |
| Contact method | A number in an ad, pop-up, or unsolicited message | Find help through Roku’s official support site. |
| Requested access | A password, Social Security number, software installation, or remote control of your computer | Refuse and end the contact. |
Other warning signs include an offer of “lifetime” channel access, a paid support subscription, or a claim that a device was activated on someone else’s account and must be unlocked for a fee. Roku’s guidance is direct: “Roku® doesn’t charge for activation or support.”

What to do before paying or calling
- Close the suspicious page or pop-up. Do not call its number or enter payment details.
- Go directly to a Roku address ending in
roku.com, such as Roku Support or my.roku.com. - Do not pay for activation, account creation, or Roku support. Roku’s account security guidance also advises vigilance about suspicious communications and protecting account credentials.
- Do not share your password or Social Security number, install software at a stranger’s direction, or allow purported support staff to control your computer.
The FTC’s general tech-support scam guidance says genuine security warnings will not tell you to call a phone number. Treat an alarming computer pop-up with a phone number as suspicious, including when you were looking for Roku help.
What to do if you paid, shared a password, or allowed computer access
- Contact your bank or card issuer promptly. Ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed, and review recent activity for unfamiliar transactions.
- Change exposed passwords. Change your Roku and email passwords. If you reused either password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Use a trusted device if you granted remote access.
- Remove software the scammer had you install. If you are unsure whether your computer is safe, seek help from a technician you trust rather than following instructions from the same caller or site.
- Report the incident. File a report with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint and use Roku’s official support site to report a fake Roku site or request legitimate help. The CFPB’s scam contact guidance also lists the FBI, FTC, state attorney general, and local police as possible reporting contacts.
What to do if the Roku device or account looks unfamiliar
On the device, open Settings > System > About and check the linked email address. If you do not recognize it, Roku advises factory-resetting the device and setting it up again with your own Roku account. For the account, use a strong, unique password, keep its email address current, consider setting a purchase PIN, and review charges periodically. Roku’s password details can differ by region and page version; its UK guidance specifies at least eight characters with numbers, symbols, and upper- and lower-case letters.

How to investigate an unfamiliar Roku-related charge
Do not assume every unexpected charge is a scam. Check the billing record and account history before disputing it:
- Look for a free trial that converted to a recurring paid subscription.
- Check other Roku accounts, email addresses, and devices that may be used in your household, along with purchase history and household purchases.
- Identify who billed you. If the charge names a channel or service provider rather than Roku, contact that provider about billing. Roku explains this distinction in its guidance on unrecognized charges.
- A $1 card authorization may be a temporary payment-method validation hold that is refunded, rather than a completed purchase.
What is known about Roku scam numbers in 2026
The guidance cited here does not establish a current 2026 count or rate for Roku-specific scams, so it cannot support a claim that such scams are increasing or quantify losses. A historical incident should not be confused with a 2026 scam statistic: Roku Staff reported in April 2024 that unauthorized actors accessed about 15,000 user accounts using credentials stolen from another source in a credential-stuffing attack. Roku described that as an account-security incident, not a breach of its own systems. Roku’s account protection post provides the details.
