Roku on an LG Smart TV: What Works and How to Set It Up

To use Roku on an LG Smart TV, connect a Roku streaming player or Streaming Stick to an HDMI port, select that input on the TV, then complete Roku’s setup. Roku devices work with TVs that have HDMI; they do not require the television to run Roku OS. If you mean The Roku Channel app specifically, check your LG TV’s Content Store because app availability depends on the model, webOS version, and region.

Can you get Roku on an LG TV?

Yes. The straightforward way to use Roku’s interface and apps is to connect an external Roku player or Streaming Stick over HDMI. Roku Support says its streaming players work with any television that has an HDMI connection, so LG’s smart-TV operating system does not determine whether the external player can connect. See Roku’s TV requirements.

“Roku” can also mean The Roku Channel, a streaming service rather than the Roku player interface. Roku’s platform and country availability information lists Roku devices, compatible Samsung TVs, compatible Amazon Fire TV devices, web, and mobile; it does not list LG TVs. LG app availability varies by TV model, webOS version, and region, so check your exact model in the LG Content Store. If the app is not available there, an external Roku device connected by HDMI is the supported route to Roku’s device interface; do not assume it will make every Roku Channel feature or service available in every country.

How to connect and set up a Roku on an LG TV

  1. Connect Roku to HDMI. Find an open HDMI port on the LG TV. Connect a Roku player with its HDMI cable, or plug a Streaming Stick directly into the port. Roku recommends using the HDMI cable supplied with the player. If adjacent ports leave too little room for a Stick, an HDMI extender may help if one is supplied or compatible with your model. See Roku’s setup instructions.
  2. Connect the player to power. Use the supplied power adapter. A TV’s USB port may not provide enough power; if Roku reports low power or behaves inconsistently, use the wall adapter.
  3. Select the Roku’s HDMI input. Turn on the LG TV and use its remote’s Input or Source control to choose the HDMI number where Roku is connected. Allow about 10 seconds for the TV to detect the device.
  4. Complete the on-screen setup. Prepare or pair the Roku remote as prompted, choose a language, and connect to Wi-Fi. Some Roku player models also offer Ethernet. Roku uses the connection for streaming and updates; see its internet connection guidance.
  5. Install updates and set the display. Let Roku finish any software update, then follow the display setup. Roku recommends Automatic display selection so the player can match the TV’s available resolution.
  6. Activate your Roku account. Follow the activation instructions displayed by Roku. Roku says activation uses a Roku account and a second device, such as a phone or tablet, to verify the account email.

What you need for streaming

An HDMI connection gets the Roku picture onto the TV, but streaming also requires internet access. Roku setup uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet for streaming and software updates. After setup, offline viewing is limited to HDMI, cable, or over-the-air broadcasts; streaming apps and services need a connection. Check Roku’s Wi-Fi and Ethernet guidance if setup cannot get online.

Getting 4K or HDR on an LG TV

Do not assume that every Roku model or LG television supports 4K or HDR. The Roku device, TV, and the relevant parts of the connection chain must support the format. For 4K Ultra HD, Roku’s setup guidance specifies HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support across the connection chain. Its 4K setup guide also gives LG examples for enabling HDMI Ultra Deep Color on the input used by Roku.

Depending on the LG model and software, the setting may appear under a path such as Home > HDMI > Settings > Advanced > Picture > HDMI ULTRA DEEP COLOR or All Settings > Picture > Additional Settings > HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color. Menu labels and paths vary, and the option may be specific to each input. If neither path matches your TV, consult its current manual and look for the HDMI setting for the port connected to Roku.

Fix a blank screen or missing Roku input

  • Check power: Confirm the Roku player is powered. If it reports low power, connect it to the supplied wall adapter instead of relying on the TV’s USB port.
  • Check the selected input: Make sure the LG TV is set to the HDMI port Roku uses. If Roku does not appear, use the TV’s Input or Source menu to try the correct port again.
  • Reseat the connection: Check that the HDMI plug is fully inserted. If needed, try another HDMI port or cable, as recommended in Roku’s input troubleshooting guidance.
  • Try input switching features only if useful: HDMI-CEC can let a Roku player discover or switch TV inputs. LG calls its CEC feature SIMPLINK on many models, but the label and menu location can vary. You can still select the Roku input manually with the LG remote.
