Roku: How to Find MAC Address

A Roku MAC address is a unique hardware identifier assigned to the network connection on your Roku player, Roku Streaming Stick, or Roku TV. You may need it when setting up Wi-Fi, adding the device to a router allowlist, connecting on a hotel or dorm network, or troubleshooting connection problems with your internet provider or network administrator.

Roku devices usually show the MAC address in the Settings menu, but it may also appear on the device label, original packaging, or in related network details depending on the model. Some Roku TVs and streaming devices can display separate addresses for wireless and wired connections, so it helps to know where to check and which one your network requires.

What a Roku MAC Address Is Used For

A Roku MAC address is a unique hardware identifier assigned to the network adapter inside your Roku player, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Streambar, or Roku TV. Roku devices that support both wired and wireless networking may have more than one MAC address: one for Wi-Fi and one for Ethernet. When a network sees your Roku, it uses this address to recognize the device at the hardware level, separate from the Roku account, serial number, device name, or IP address.

The most common reason to find a Roku MAC address is to connect to a network that requires device registration. This is common in hotels, college dorms, apartment complexes, offices, and some public Wi-Fi systems. These networks may ask you to enter the MAC address into a web portal before the Roku is allowed online. Because many Roku devices do not have a full web browser, registering the MAC address from a phone or computer may be the easiest way to get streaming access.

  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

You may also need the MAC address if your home router uses MAC address filtering. With filtering enabled, the router only allows approved devices to connect. In that case, you would add the Roku’s wireless MAC address to the allowed list for Wi-Fi, or the Ethernet MAC address if the Roku is connected with a cable. The exact label varies by router brand, but the address is usually entered in a section such as access control, device filtering, wireless security, or parental controls.

  • Wi-Fi setup: Some managed networks require the Roku’s wireless MAC address before the device can join.
  • Router filtering: A router may block unknown devices unless their MAC addresses are added manually.
  • Hotel and dorm networks: Captive portals often use the MAC address to authorize devices that cannot complete browser-based sign-in.
  • Troubleshooting: Comparing the MAC address in your router’s device list can help confirm that you are looking at the correct Roku.
  • Network reservations: Some routers let you assign a consistent IP address to the Roku by tying that reservation to its MAC address.

The MAC address can also help when diagnosing connection problems. For example, if your Roku appears offline in the Roku app but your router shows a connected device with the same MAC address, the issue may be with app discovery rather than the network connection itself. If the router shows the Roku connected to the wrong band, blocked by a rule, or assigned to a guest network, the MAC address helps identify it among phones, laptops, smart TVs, speakers, and other devices.

It is worth keeping the distinction between MAC address, IP address, and serial number clear. The MAC address identifies the Roku’s network hardware, while the IP address is assigned by the network and can change. The serial number identifies the physical Roku device for support, warranty, and account-related purposes. If a network administrator asks for the Roku MAC address, they usually need the Wi-Fi or Ethernet address shown in the Roku network settings, not the serial number printed in the account or on the device.

How to Find the MAC Address in Roku Settings

The most reliable place to find a Roku MAC address is in the device’s own Settings menu. This works for most Roku streaming players, Roku Streaming Sticks, Roku Express models, Roku Ultra, and many Roku TVs. The MAC address shown here is the hardware address your router, school network, hotel portal, or support technician may ask for when identifying the Roku on a network.

  1. Turn on your Roku device and TV.
  2. Press the Home button on the Roku remote.
  3. Scroll down and select Settings.
  4. Select Network.
  5. Select About.
  6. Look for Wireless MAC Address or Wi-Fi MAC Address.

The address is usually displayed as six pairs of letters and numbers, such as 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E. If your Roku supports Ethernet and is connected with a network cable, you may also see a separate Wired MAC Address. Use the wireless address for Wi-Fi registration or router filtering, and use the wired address only if the Roku connects through Ethernet.

What to select if your Roku menu looks different

Some Roku software versions use slightly different wording. If you do not see Network > About, check Settings > System > About instead. On certain models, the MAC address may appear on the general About screen along with the serial number, device ID, software version, IP address, and connection status. The exact label can vary, but it will normally include the words MAC Address, Wireless MAC, or Wi-Fi MAC.

Connection type MAC address to use
Wi-Fi network Wireless MAC Address or Wi-Fi MAC Address
Ethernet cable Wired MAC Address
Hotel, dorm, or campus Wi-Fi registration Usually the Wireless MAC Address

If you are writing the address down for a network administrator or entering it into a router, copy it exactly as shown. MAC addresses use the numbers 0-9 and the letters A-F, so a character that looks like the letter “O” is usually the number zero. The punctuation may appear as colons, hyphens, or no separators at all; most router and network forms accept the address as long as the characters are correct.

How to Find the MAC Address on a Roku TV

On a Roku TV, the MAC address is stored in the Roku operating system, just like it is on a Roku streaming stick or Roku player. The steps are nearly the same, but the remote may have TV-specific buttons and the network screen may show details for both wired and wireless connections if your model includes an Ethernet port. You can use the MAC address for router allowlists, campus or hotel network registration, troubleshooting with an internet provider, or confirming that the correct TV is connected to your home network.

Find it from the Roku TV Settings menu

  1. Turn on the Roku TV and press the Home button on the Roku remote.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings.
  3. Select Network.
  4. Select About.
  5. Look for Wireless MAC address or Wi-Fi MAC address.
  6. If your Roku TV supports a wired connection, also check for Ethernet MAC address or Wired MAC address.

The address is usually shown as six pairs of letters and numbers, such as A1:B2:C3:D4:E5:F6 or A1-B2-C3-D4-E5-F6. When entering it into a router, school portal, hotel login page, or support form, type it exactly as shown unless the site asks for a different format. Some registration pages remove punctuation automatically, while others require colons or hyphens.

Wireless vs. wired MAC address

If your Roku TV has both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, make sure you provide the MAC address for the connection you plan to use. The wireless MAC address applies when the TV connects over Wi-Fi. The Ethernet MAC address applies when you plug a network cable into the TV. These are separate hardware identifiers, so registering the Wi-Fi address will not usually allow a wired connection, and registering the wired address will not usually allow Wi-Fi access.

Connection type MAC address to use Common use
Wi-Fi Wireless MAC address Dorm networks, hotel Wi-Fi, home router filtering
Ethernet Ethernet or wired MAC address Wired home networks, office setups, direct router connections

On some Roku TV brands, such as TCL, Hisense, onn., Sharp, Philips, and Westinghouse, the menu labels can vary slightly by software version. If you do not see Network > About, open Settings > System > About and review the device information there. You may also see the MAC address during the initial network setup screen before the TV connects to Wi-Fi, which is useful when a dorm, apartment, or hotel network requires device registration first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the MAC address is not visible, restart the TV from Settings > System > Power > System restart, then check the network About screen again. For Roku TVs without a Power submenu, use Settings > System > System restart. You can also unplug the TV for about 30 seconds and reconnect it. After the restart, return to the Network menu and confirm whether the Wi-Fi or Ethernet hardware details are displayed.

How to Check the Device Label or Packaging

If you cannot open the Roku Settings menu, check the physical device label or the original packaging. Many Roku streaming players, Roku Streambars, and some Roku TVs include network identifiers on a sticker along with the serial number, model number, and device ID. This is useful when you need the MAC address before the Roku is connected to Wi-Fi, such as when registering the device on a hotel, dorm, school, or office network that requires preapproval.

Where to look on Roku streaming players

On a Roku Express, Roku Premiere, Roku Ultra, or similar streaming box, turn the device over and look for a small label on the bottom or back. The MAC address may be printed as Wireless MAC, Wi-Fi MAC, WLAN MAC, or simply MAC. It is usually a 12-character hexadecimal value, sometimes separated by colons or hyphens, such as A1:B2:C3:D4:E5:F6. If the device has an Ethernet port, you may see two different entries: one for Wireless and one for Ethernet. Use the one that matches how the Roku will connect to the network.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

Where to look on Roku Streaming Stick models

For Roku Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick 4K models, the label may be much smaller because the device plugs directly into the TV’s HDMI port. Unplug the stick from the HDMI port and inspect both sides of the casing. Some models print only the serial number or device ID on the stick, while the MAC address may appear on the retail box or setup insert instead. If the text is too small, use your phone camera to zoom in or take a photo so you can read it more clearly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where to look on Roku TV packaging

For Roku TVs, the MAC address is less commonly printed on the outside of the TV itself, but it may appear on the original box, a manufacturer label, or paperwork included with the TV. Check the barcode label on the box first, especially near the model and serial number. On the TV, look on the rear panel, side edge, or near the input ports. Depending on the TV brand, the sticker may list network information separately from the Roku device details.

  • Wireless MAC: Use this for Wi-Fi registration, router allowlists, and most hotel or dorm network forms.
  • Ethernet MAC: Use this only if the Roku device or Roku TV is connected with a wired network cable.
  • Serial number: This is not the same as a MAC address, although it may be requested by Roku support.
  • Device ID: This identifies the Roku hardware but usually will not work for router MAC filtering.

When entering the MAC address into a router, captive portal, or support form, copy it exactly but follow the format the form expects. Some systems accept colons, some require hyphens, and others want the 12 characters with no separators. If the label is damaged, missing, or lists only the serial number, use the Roku Settings menu when possible or check the router’s connected-device list after the Roku attempts to join the network.

Finding the MAC Address Before Connecting to Wi-Fi

If your Roku has not joined Wi-Fi yet, you may still need its MAC address to get past a network registration page, add the device to a router allowlist, or give the address to a dorm, hotel, or office IT desk. Roku devices can use different MAC addresses for wireless and wired connections, so make sure you are looking for the wireless MAC address if you plan to connect by Wi-Fi. The address is usually shown as six pairs of letters and numbers, such as A1:B2:C3:D4:E5:F6.

On most Roku streaming players and Roku TVs, the easiest place to check before connecting is the initial setup flow. Turn on the Roku, choose your language, and continue until you reach the network setup screen. Look for an option such as About, Network help, Device information, or a message that displays network details. The exact wording varies by Roku model and software version, but many devices show the wireless MAC address on or near the screen where available Wi-Fi networks are listed.

Ways to get the address before the Roku is online

  • Check the setup screen: Start setup and stop at the Wi-Fi selection step. If a device information option appears, open it and copy the wireless MAC address exactly.
  • Use the printed label: Look on the bottom, back, or side of a Roku streaming device. On a Roku TV, check the rear panel near the model and serial number label. Some labels show the wireless MAC address, while others show only the serial number or device ID.
  • Check the box or paperwork: Retail packaging may include a sticker with the serial number, model number, and sometimes the MAC address. This is most common on streaming players and sticks, but it is not guaranteed.
  • Connect by Ethernet temporarily: If your Roku model or Roku TV has an Ethernet port, plug it into the router, complete enough setup to open Settings > Network > About, then read the wireless MAC address if it is listed separately.
  • Use your router’s device list: If you can briefly connect the Roku to any allowed network, the router’s client list may show the Roku device name and MAC address. This is helpful when the Roku screen does not display it clearly.

For hotel and dorm networks, the registration portal may ask for the Roku’s MAC address before the device can reach the internet. If the portal is only accessible from a phone or laptop, find the Roku MAC address first, then enter it into the network registration page. Some managed networks require the address to be registered exactly, including the correct characters and no extra spaces. If the form rejects colons, enter the same address without separators.

The Roku mobile app usually cannot discover or control a Roku until both devices are already on the same network, so it is not the best method for finding the address before Wi-Fi setup. After the Roku is connected, the app may help you navigate to network settings, but it does not replace the on-screen setup page, device label, router list, or network administrator tools when the Roku is still offline.

Troubleshooting When the MAC Address Does Not Appear

If your Roku does not show a MAC address in the Settings menu, the cause is usually related to network hardware not being initialized, outdated software, a failed wireless scan, or looking in the wrong place for the active network adapter. Roku players and Roku TVs may have separate MAC addresses for wireless and wired Ethernet connections, so make sure you are checking the address that matches how the device will connect to the network.

Restart the Roku and check the network screen again

Start with a full system restart rather than simply turning the TV screen off. On most Roku devices, go to Settings > System > Power > System restart > Restart. If you do not see a Power menu, use Settings > System > System restart. After the Roku restarts, return to Settings > Network > About and look for the wireless or Ethernet MAC address.

Confirm whether Wi-Fi or Ethernet is being used

Some Roku models display different network details depending on the connection type. If your Roku is connected with an Ethernet cable, the screen may show the wired MAC address instead of the wireless MAC address. If you need the Wi-Fi MAC address for a dorm, hotel, router allowlist, or captive portal registration, disconnect the Ethernet cable, restart the Roku, and open the Network About screen again. For Roku TVs with an Ethernet port, also check whether the TV is currently set up for wired networking.

  • Wireless MAC address: Used when connecting the Roku to Wi-Fi.
  • Ethernet MAC address: Used when connecting with a network cable.
  • Router lists: May show the Roku by device name, IP address, or manufacturer instead of “Roku.”

Run a network scan or start wireless setup

If the Roku has not been connected to a network yet, open Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless. Let the Roku scan for available Wi-Fi networks, even if you do not complete the connection. On some models, the wireless adapter details appear only after the device begins scanning. Once the scan finishes, back out to the Network About page and check whether the MAC address is now listed.

Update software if the device can get online another way

If possible, temporarily connect the Roku to a different Wi-Fi network, a mobile hotspot, or Ethernet. Then go to Settings > System > Software update > Check now. A software update can refresh network drivers and fix display issues in the Settings menu. After the update and restart, check the Network About screen again.

If the MAC address still does not appear, inspect the device label, original box, or Roku TV rear panel for a printed wireless MAC address. You can also sign in to your router or access point and check the connected-device list after attempting a connection. For hotel or dorm registration pages, enter the exact MAC address with the same characters but without extra spaces; formats such as AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF and AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF usually represent the same address. If no wireless MAC address appears anywhere and the Roku cannot detect Wi-Fi networks, the wireless adapter may be failing, and Roku Support or the TV manufacturer may need the model number and serial number to verify repair or replacement options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find my Roku MAC address before connecting it to Wi-Fi?

Yes, in many cases you can find it during the initial setup screens before the Roku is fully connected. Look for the network setup or wireless information screen, where the wireless MAC address may be shown. If it is not displayed there, check the device label, original packaging, or your router’s connected-device list after attempting setup.

Where is the MAC address on a Roku TV?

On most Roku TVs, go to Settings > Network > About to see the wireless MAC address. Some models may also show it under Settings > System > About. If the TV has both wired and wireless networking, you may see separate MAC addresses for Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

Do I need the wireless MAC address or the Ethernet MAC address?

Use the wireless MAC address if your Roku connects over Wi-Fi, which is the most common setup. Use the Ethernet MAC address only if your Roku device or Roku TV is connected with a network cable. This matters for router allowlists, dorm networks, hotel networks, and ISP device registration because the wrong MAC address will not authorize the connection you are actually using.

Can I find my Roku MAC address from the Roku mobile app?

The Roku mobile app may show device details after it has already found and connected to your Roku on the same network. However, it is not the most reliable method for finding a MAC address before Wi-Fi setup, because the app usually needs the Roku to be reachable first. For setup or registration, the Roku Settings menu, TV network information screen, label, or packaging is usually better.

What should I do if the MAC address does not appear in Roku settings?

Restart the Roku, then check Settings > Network > About again. If the device has not been set up yet, try the wireless setup screen or inspect the physical label and box. If the MAC address is still missing, update the Roku software if possible or contact Roku support with the model and serial number.

Bottom Line

Finding your Roku MAC address is usually as simple as checking the Network or About section in Settings, but you may also be able to locate it on the device label or box depending on the model. On Roku TVs, streaming sticks, and players, the exact path can vary slightly, so check both the on-screen menus and any physical labels if you need it quickly.

Once you have the MAC address, you can use it to register the device on a hotel, dorm, or workplace network, add it to a router’s allowlist, or share it with support for troubleshooting. If one method does not work, try another source or use the Roku mobile app when your device is already connected and visible on the same network.
