A roguelite keeps the repeated-run format but adapts those rules, commonly allowing currency, upgrades, unlocked characters, weapons, items or story progress to survive death. The distinction is useful, but it is a spectrum rather than a universal pass-or-fail test.
The difference at a glance
| Question | Strict roguelike interpretation | Common roguelite interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when you die? | The active character and current run end; the run’s immediate state is generally reset. | The run ends, but selected rewards or unlocks can remain for later attempts. |
| Does progress carry over? | Normally no: character, inventory, map state and immediate advantages belong to the finished run. | Often yes: currency, permanent upgrades, unlocked characters, weapons, items or story access may persist. |
| How is movement handled? | Turn-based and grid-based play are defining reference points. | Real-time, free-moving controls are common, although a roguelite can retain turn-based or grid movement. |
| How does the world change? | Procedural generation varies maps, encounters and item layouts between runs. | Procedural variation is commonly retained, even when other Rogue traits are changed or removed. |
| How complex are the systems? | Multiple solutions, non-modal actions, resource management and interacting systems are central reference points. | Complexity varies widely; some games retain deep systems while others focus on a smaller set of run choices. |
| How close is it to Rogue? | A close descendant of Rogue’s dungeon-crawler structure. | A looser borrowing of selected roguelike ideas. |
These descriptions explain common usage, not a legal definition. A game can sit between the labels, and players, developers and storefronts do not always apply the words consistently.

Where the terms come from
Rogue established the run
Rogue launched in 1980 with randomly generated dungeon levels, increasing difficulty and permadeath. Its structure made each attempt a self-contained expedition: the player entered a changing dungeon, managed limited resources, tried to survive escalating danger and lost the active run on death. The modern word roguelike describes games that remain close to that arrangement, even when their setting or presentation is different.
The Berlin Interpretation is a reference point
At the International Roguelike Development Conference in 2008, developers described eight design parameters for identifying games that resemble Rogue. The list is often called the Berlin Interpretation. It is best used as a checklist for discussing design, not as a mandatory certification test.

Steam’s 2022 explanation of the genre notes that the strict definition is debated and that roguelike is frequently used as an umbrella term. The checklist is therefore valuable for describing a game’s ancestry and mechanics, but it cannot settle every borderline case.
What permadeath actually means
Permadeath means that death ends the active character and the current run instead of returning that character to an ordinary checkpoint. You begin another attempt with a new run. The exact save, quit and recovery rules depend on the individual game, so “permadeath” describes the consequence of dying, not every detail of how a run can be stored.
Run death versus a checkpoint
In a checkpoint-based game, a failed fight may reload a recent position while preserving the same character, inventory and map state. Under permadeath, that active state is no longer the state you continue. The next attempt starts its own run, with whatever starting conditions the game provides.

The word applies to the run or character in play. A game can still keep information outside that run. In a strict roguelike reading, those external advantages are limited or absent. In common roguelite usage, the game deliberately preserves selected rewards. Confusing the death of a run with the deletion of every account-level unlock is the source of much of the terminology debate.
What progression means in each label
Strict roguelike progression
A strict roguelike generally treats the run as the complete unit of progress. The character developed during that attempt, the inventory collected, the map discovered and the immediate advantages earned are normally reset when the character dies. Success comes from learning systems, making better decisions and reaching farther within the run rather than from making every future character permanently stronger.
Roguelite progression
A roguelite keeps the run-ending consequence but separates some rewards from the dead character. You may return with currency, a permanent upgrade, an unlocked character, a newly available weapon or item, or access to additional story content. Steam describes this pattern as borrowing roguelike elements more loosely, with death being “not-quite-so-permanent” because points, upgrades or objects can carry into later attempts.
Persistence can be selective
“Progress carries over” does not mean that everything carries over. A game might retain currency but reset the run’s map and inventory. Another might unlock characters while leaving combat upgrades temporary. A third might preserve story access but not power. To classify a particular title, ask exactly which data survives death rather than relying on a marketing label.

The eight Berlin parameters, explained
1. Random map generation
Procedural generation creates dungeon levels, rooms, routes, encounters or item layouts that vary between runs. The purpose is not merely visual novelty. A changing layout prevents a single memorized route from solving every attempt and makes adaptation part of the challenge.
Generation can be combined with authored pieces, fixed rules or a controlled sequence. Therefore, the presence of procedural variation supports a roguelike reading but does not decide the label by itself.
2. Permadeath
The current character and run end on death, requiring a fresh attempt. This gives ordinary decisions long-term weight inside the run: spending a resource now can affect whether the character survives a later encounter, because a failed run cannot simply resume from a standard checkpoint.
3. Turn-based combat
Turn-based play gives the player time to consider movement, attacks, inventory use and other actions before the game advances. It supports the deliberate, system-heavy style associated with classic roguelikes. A game can still be a roguelite when it uses real-time combat, but real-time action moves it away from the strict Rogue template.

4. Grid-based movement
Classic roguelike movement treats the world as a grid. Position, line of approach and the relationship between neighboring cells matter directly. Free movement in continuous space is common in roguelites because it suits action-oriented controls, but grid movement remains one of the clearest signs that a game is following the traditional model.
5. Complexity with multiple solutions
Complexity here means more than having many enemies or a large skill tree. The game offers interacting rules that let players solve a problem in different ways. Position, equipment, terrain, timing, enemy behavior and resource choices can combine to create alternatives instead of prescribing one correct action.
6. Non-modal actions
Non-modal actions allow the player to perform relevant actions through a consistent command structure rather than entering separate modes for every task. Movement, combat, item use and interaction belong to the same broader simulation. This supports experimentation because the player can apply systems in combinations the designer did not reduce to a single context-specific button.

7. Resource management
Resources are limited or consequential: health, food, ammunition, equipment durability, inventory space or other supplies may determine whether a route is safe. Management creates trade-offs. Taking an item now may consume capacity, while saving it may make a later encounter survivable. Roguelites can simplify these pressures, but resource decisions remain a common part of the family.
8. Hack-and-slash combat
The final parameter describes direct combat against enemies rather than a purely abstract puzzle or management simulation. In the classic model, that combat operates alongside the other parameters: procedural levels, turn-taking, grid position, resources and permanent consequences interact in one run.
No single parameter is a universal requirement in modern usage. A game that omits turn-based combat but retains procedural runs and permanent unlocks may be widely called a roguelite. A game that retains nearly all eight traits will usually be understood as a strict roguelike.
Why procedural levels alone do not make a game a roguelike
Procedural generation is only one axis. A game can create a new map every time while allowing unlimited checkpoints, keeping the same character after death or offering no meaningful resource decisions. That design uses procedural content, but it does not necessarily reproduce Rogue’s run structure.
Use a broader test:
- Does death end the active run rather than reload an ordinary checkpoint?
- Does the game vary maps, encounters or item layouts between attempts?
- Are movement and combat close to turn-based, grid-based play, or intentionally adapted away from it?
- Do resources and interacting systems create more than one viable solution?
- Does the run reset completely, or do selected rewards persist?
- Does the overall structure resemble a self-contained dungeon expedition descended from Rogue?
The more answers align with the first set of questions, the closer the game is to a strict roguelike. Persistent rewards and real-time, free-moving controls push it toward roguelite usage, but neither feature is an automatic exclusion.

How the two labels change the player’s decisions
Learning versus accumulation
In a strict roguelike, the most durable improvement is the player’s understanding. A failed attempt can teach enemy behavior, reveal the cost of a risky route or show how two systems interact, but the next character does not normally inherit the dead character’s power. This makes knowledge, caution and execution central.
In a roguelite, learning still matters, but accumulation can change the starting position. A permanent upgrade or newly unlocked item can open options that were unavailable on the first attempt. Death therefore has two effects: it ends the current run and may contribute to a stronger or broader future run.

Risk calculation
Both formats ask whether a short-term reward justifies danger. The difference is what failure preserves. In a strict roguelike, losing a valuable item or a well-developed character can erase the run’s immediate gains. In a roguelite, some rewards may still be banked, so the player can judge a dangerous choice against both its run value and its possible long-term value.
Replayability
Repeated runs serve different purposes. Procedural variation keeps the environment from being solved by memorization. In a strict roguelike, the changing conditions combine with a reset character to make each attempt a fresh test of the same rules. In a roguelite, persistent unlocks add another layer: the player may return not only to try a different route, but also to test newly available tools.
A practical classification method
When a store page, review or friend uses the terms differently, classify the game by its mechanics rather than its tag. Follow these steps:
- Identify the unit that dies. Confirm whether death ends a character and run, or merely sends the same character back to a checkpoint.
- List what survives. Separate run state from account- or profile-level rewards. Note currency, upgrades, characters, weapons, items and story access individually.
- Check world variation. Determine whether maps, encounters and item layouts are procedurally varied, partly authored or fixed.
- Check time and space. Record whether movement is grid-based or free-moving and whether combat is turn-based or real-time.
- Examine system depth. Look for inventory pressure, identification, hunger or other resource rules, plus interactions that permit multiple solutions.
- Compare the overall structure with Rogue. The closer the game is to a self-contained, system-driven dungeon run, the stronger the roguelike description.
This method produces a more useful description than asking whether a title “has procedural levels.” It also explains why two games carrying the same storefront tag can feel completely different.
Common misunderstandings
“Roguelite means there is no permadeath.”
Usually, the opposite is true. A roguelite normally retains the run-ending consequence, but makes part of the reward persistent. If death simply reloads a checkpoint with the same character and immediate state, the game may be difficult or replayable without using either term in the strict sense.
“Any permanent upgrade makes the game a roguelite.”
Permanent progression is a strong roguelite signal, not a complete definition. The label still depends on the whole structure: repeated runs, meaningful death, procedural or varied content and the degree to which the game borrows from roguelike systems. A game can have a permanent skill tree without being organized around runs.
“A roguelike must be turn-based and grid-based.”
Those traits are central to the Berlin Interpretation and to the strict historical meaning. Modern usage is looser, however. Many players use roguelike as an umbrella term for games that preserve procedural runs and permadeath while changing movement or combat. Calling such a game a roguelite can be more precise, but the broader label is common.
Best Value
“Roguelites are easier.”
Persistence can reduce the cost of failure by retaining selected rewards, but it does not determine difficulty. A roguelite may demand precise play, while a strict roguelike may be forgiving in a particular situation. The labels describe structure and progression, not a universal difficulty level.
“Permadeath erases everything.”
Permadeath ends the active run. Whether currency, unlocks, story flags or other profile information survives is a separate rule. Always inspect the game’s persistence model before assuming that a death wipes the entire account.
Why the boundary remains disputed
The Berlin Interpretation was written to describe a recognizable design tradition, not to freeze the genre permanently. Developers have adapted the run structure to real-time combat, free movement, different camera perspectives, lighter resource systems and persistent progression. Those adaptations created games that clearly use roguelike ideas without matching every parameter.
As Steam put it in a 2022 editorial explanation, “Games are increasingly more likely to technically be RogueLITE, and yet Roguelike continues to be used by many as an umbrella term.” That observation explains the practical solution: use roguelike when emphasizing the broad family or Rogue ancestry, and use roguelite when persistent rewards or major mechanical changes are important to the description.
For a precise explanation, combine the label with the mechanics. “A real-time roguelite with permanent upgrades” tells the reader more than either word alone. “A turn-based, grid-based roguelike with full run resets” identifies the traditional structure directly.
Which experience should you expect?
Choose the strict roguelike profile if you want:
- Turn-based decisions and grid positioning.
- A run in which the character, inventory and immediate advantages are normally temporary.
- Deep resource management and interacting systems.
- Multiple solutions to problems rather than a single scripted route.
- A close relationship to Rogue’s dungeon-crawler structure.
Choose the roguelite profile if you want:
- Repeated runs with some rewards preserved after death.
- Permanent upgrades, unlockable characters, weapons, items or story access.
- Real-time combat or free-moving controls alongside procedural variation.
- A more flexible interpretation of the traditional formula.
- A progression loop in which failed runs can still advance the broader game.
These are preferences, not quality rankings. The right label tells you where the game’s challenge and progression are likely to live: inside one fragile run, across a series of accumulating runs, or somewhere between the two.
The most useful definition
A roguelike is best understood as a close descendant of Rogue’s self-contained, procedurally varied, permadeath-driven run, traditionally reinforced by turn-based grid play, deep resources and systemic complexity. A roguelite is a related design that keeps the repeated-run framework while relaxing some of those traits, especially by allowing selected rewards to survive death.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBecause the boundary is debated, do not treat either word as a complete specification. Check what dies, what persists, how the world changes, how combat and movement work, and how many systems interact. Those details answer the questions that the genre label alone cannot.
