Rogue VPN Files Can Let Hackers Hijack Some ASUS Routers: What to Do

A malicious VPN configuration file could let an authenticated attacker execute commands on some ASUS routers. Here’s how to check your model and reduce risk.

A malicious VPN configuration file could let an authenticated attacker execute commands on an ASUS router through its web administration interface, according to Cybernews’s report on CVE-2026-14157. The reported affected firmware family is 3.0.0.6_102—not every ASUS router. Check the support page for your exact model, install its newest available firmware, and do not upload VPN files from unknown sources.

How the VPN-file attack works

The reported flaw, CVE-2026-14157, involves a malicious VPN configuration file uploaded through the router’s web administration interface. Cybernews says an authenticated attacker could use the file to execute commands on the router. The reported path requires authentication; the coverage does not establish that an unauthenticated internet user can exploit the VPN import workflow.

ASUS routers can use VPN-client profiles for ordinary connections. ASUS’s VPN client setup guide describes selecting a VPN client, uploading an .ovpn file supplied by the VPN service provider, creating a profile, and activating it. Some newer firmware calls the feature VPN Fusion. Using a VPN client is not itself the vulnerability; the risk described is importing a crafted, malicious file.

Is your ASUS router affected?

Cybernews reports CVE-2026-14157 affects the ASUS 3.0.0.6_102 firmware series. The available reporting does not give a complete list of affected router models or one fixed firmware version that applies to every model. Do not assume your router is affected—or unaffected—based on the brand or firmware family alone.

  1. Find your router’s exact model name or number on its label, in its administration interface, or in its documentation.
  2. Open ASUS’s security advisory page and the support page for that exact model.
  3. Check the model’s firmware downloads and notices for the latest version and any applicable security guidance. ASUS’s general advice is to install the newest firmware available for the router.
  4. Follow the model-specific update instructions. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal fixed version for CVE-2026-14157, so use the version ASUS currently lists for your device.

What to do now

Update firmware first

Use the official ASUS support page for your model to obtain firmware and instructions. ASUS’s security guidance recommends keeping router firmware up to date. If ASUS has published a model-specific advisory or update instruction, follow it rather than applying firmware intended for another model.

Avoid untrusted VPN configuration files

Until the applicable update is installed, ASUS’s advisory says to avoid uploading an OVPN file. Use a configuration file supplied by your VPN provider or another source you have independently verified; an .ovpn extension does not make a file trustworthy. Do not import files from unknown websites, unsolicited messages, or other unverified sources.

Do not treat a factory reset as the primary fix

ASUS support material mentions restoring factory defaults as a troubleshooting step in some circumstances, but the available guidance does not identify a reset as the mitigation for CVE-2026-14157. Prioritize the applicable firmware update and follow ASUS’s specific instructions for your model.

What is known about exploitation?

Cybernews reported that ASUS had not disclosed whether the router vulnerabilities covered in its story had been exploited in real attacks. That means there was no public confirmation in that reporting; it does not prove that exploitation has not occurred. The report does not provide an attributable count of affected routers or confirmed victims, and the 9.4/10 severity rating is not an estimate of the number of compromised devices.

A separate ASUS router flaw in the same coverage

Cybernews also described CVE-2026-13313, a distinct issue. Its reported scope and impact differ from the VPN-file flaw:

CVE Reported firmware families Attacker prerequisite and reported result Reported severity
CVE-2026-14157 3.0.0.6_102 Authenticated attacker uploads a malicious VPN file through the administration interface; command execution 9.4/10, reported by Cybernews in 2026
CVE-2026-13313 3.0.0.4_386, 3.0.0.4_388, and 3.0.0.6_102 Authenticated attacker; higher-privilege command execution 8.9/10, reported by Cybernews in 2026

These severity scores describe the reported flaws, not the likelihood that a particular router has been attacked. The vulnerabilities should not be conflated: CVE-2026-13313 is not the VPN-file issue.
