The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is the stronger choice for performance efficiency, OLED image quality and battery capacity; the original Lenovo Legion Go remains the better fit if you want the largest screen and detachable, mouse-like controls. They are not interchangeable designs. The X20 combines AMD’s newer Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, 24GB of memory, integrated Xbox-style controls and an 80Wh battery in a 7.4-inch OLED handheld. Lenovo’s first Legion Go uses an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform, 16GB of memory, an 8.8-inch LCD and 49.2Wh battery, but its controllers detach and add a trackpad, mouse wheel and FPS mode.

That means there is no single winner for every player. Choose the X20 for newer silicon, a smaller OLED display, conventional gamepad ergonomics and more stored energy. Choose the Legion Go when screen size, detachable controllers and desktop navigation matter more than compactness and battery capacity.

Performance: is the X20 faster than the original Legion Go?

The X20 is the more modern and better-equipped performance platform on paper. It uses AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB LPDDR5X and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. The original Legion Go uses the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform, 16GB LPDDR5X and configurations up to a 1TB SSD. The extra memory gives the X20 more headroom for demanding games, background processes and higher-resolution textures, while the newer processor generation is designed around improved efficiency as well as speed.

There is not a matched test table that runs the original Legion Go and X20 through the same games, drivers, power limits and settings. It would therefore be misleading to claim a specific percentage advantage or promise that every title will run faster. The defensible conclusion is that the X20 starts with newer silicon and more memory, while the Legion Go’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme remains a capable handheld processor.

What the X20’s published tests show

PC Gamer tested the X20 at 35W while plugged in. These results are measurements from that outlet’s settings, not universal frame-rate guarantees:

Game and settings Average result 1% low
Black Myth: Wukong, 1080p, medium, no upscaling 26 FPS 19 FPS
Black Myth: Wukong, 1080p, medium, with upscaling 40 FPS 35 FPS
Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p, medium, no upscaling 42 FPS 28 FPS
Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p, medium, with upscaling 58 FPS 40 FPS
F1 24, 1080p, medium, with upscaling 85 FPS 61 FPS

Upscaling is doing substantial work in these examples. In Black Myth: Wukong, the average rose from 26 to 40 FPS; in Cyberpunk 2077, it rose from 42 to 58 FPS. A higher average does not remove every hitch, which is why the 1% low is useful: it indicates how much slower the least-smooth portion of the run became under the test conditions.

What this means for the Legion Go

Without an equivalent, same-settings Legion Go run, the comparison should stay qualitative. The X20 is the safer choice if you want the newest available platform and more memory for demanding modern releases. The Legion Go can still make sense when you prefer its larger panel or controller flexibility and are willing to tune resolution, graphics presets and upscaling per game.

Both devices are Windows handheld PCs, so neither should be treated like a fixed-console appliance. Expect to adjust wattage, frame-rate targets and image-scaling settings for demanding games. A game that is comfortable at 1080p on the X20 may need a lower internal resolution on either device when running from battery.

Controls: traditional gamepad versus modular input

ROG Xbox Ally X20 controls

The X20 has integrated Xbox-style controls rather than removable parts. Its specification includes TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) sticks, impulse triggers, a transforming D-pad, refined bumpers, ABXY buttons and rubberized grips. The Xbox button arrangement is immediately familiar to players who use an Xbox controller, and the fixed layout keeps the handheld compact and ready to play without attaching or storing accessories.

The transforming D-pad is the unusual feature. Xbox describes a twist mechanism that changes it between a four-way directional input and an eight-way input. Four-way operation is suited to clean cardinal directions, while eight-way operation can be more useful for platformers, retro games and fighting games where diagonals matter. You physically rotate the pad rather than changing a software profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tom’s Guide also reports that the X20 moves the bumper-button position for easier pressing and gives the ABXY buttons a rounder profile. Those are small changes, but they affect repeated shoulder-button use and the feel of face-button presses more than a specification sheet can show.

Original Lenovo Legion Go controls

The Legion Go takes a modular approach. Both controllers detach from the main unit, and one can be used with the included FPS-mode functionality for mouse-style aiming. Hall-effect sticks are designed to resist the contact wear associated with conventional potentiometer sticks. The controllers also include a trackpad, a mouse wheel and programmable buttons.

That arrangement is valuable when Windows navigation, strategy games, first-person shooters or a desk-like setup are part of your routine. You can put the main unit on its kickstand, separate the controls and use the FPS switch for a more mouse-oriented layout. It is more adaptable than an integrated gamepad, but it also introduces extra pieces to carry, pair and position. The larger chassis and detached-controller hardware make the Legion Go less compact in a bag than the X20.

Display: OLED contrast or a larger LCD canvas?

ROG Xbox Ally X20 panel

The X20 uses a 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR). OLED pixels can switch off individually, producing deeper blacks and stronger contrast than a conventional LCD. Xbox calls it a “pixel perfect 7.4” OLED 120Hz display.” In hands-on use, Tom’s Guide observed deeper blacks and more forceful color impact than on the non-OLED Xbox Ally X, while noting that full laboratory display testing was still needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VRR helps the screen synchronize with changing frame rates, reducing visible tearing when a game does not hold a fixed 60 or 120 FPS. HDR can improve highlights and color in supported games, although the effect depends on the panel’s brightness, the game’s HDR implementation and room lighting. The 1080p resolution also keeps the X20’s pixel load manageable for a handheld GPU.

Original Lenovo Legion Go panel

The original Legion Go has an 8.8-inch high-resolution LCD with a high-refresh display. Its extra 1.4 inches of diagonal area makes Windows text, menus and strategy-game interfaces easier to inspect, especially when the unit is on a desk or kickstand. A larger panel also makes split-screen or information-heavy games more comfortable.

The trade-off is physical size and LCD contrast. The Legion Go does not offer the X20’s OLED black levels, and its larger screen can make the handheld feel less compact during long sessions. If your priority is immersion from a big image rather than maximum contrast in a small package, the Legion Go’s panel remains a persuasive reason to choose it.

Battery: capacity is clearly higher on the X20, runtime is not proven head-to-head

The X20 has an 80Wh battery. Lenovo lists the original Legion Go with a 49.2Wh battery in its 2023 datasheet. That gives the X20 substantially more stored energy before considering screen size, brightness, refresh rate, performance mode and game load. The X20’s OLED panel may also help in dark scenes, but display efficiency varies with content and brightness, so battery capacity alone cannot predict hours of play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no reliable measured-runtime comparison for these exact two models in the available evidence. Do not substitute a test of the Legion Go 2 for the original Legion Go: they are different products. Tom’s Guide measured 2 hours 15 minutes for Legion Go 2 and 3 hours 14 minutes for the ROG Ally X in its own PCMark gaming test, but those figures do not establish the runtime of the original Legion Go or X20 in the same conditions.

How to interpret the capacity difference

  • For long sessions away from an outlet: the X20 starts with a major advantage because 80Wh is considerably more energy than 49.2Wh.
  • For maximum frame rate: either handheld can consume its battery quickly at a high-wattage mode, high brightness and high refresh rate.
  • For predictable travel: plan around a USB-C charger rather than assuming the capacity gap guarantees a particular number of hours.
  • For plugged-in play: the battery comparison matters less, while cooling, charger capacity and the selected power mode matter more.

Memory, storage and expansion

The X20 includes 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. The original Legion Go has 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, with configurations available up to 1TB. Games, shader caches and Windows updates can consume internal storage quickly, so a 1TB configuration is the more comfortable starting point for a large installed library.

Both devices support microSD expansion. The X20 specifically lists MicroSD Express support, while Lenovo lists microSD expansion for the Legion Go. Check the card standard and the handheld’s slot specification before buying a card; a card that physically fits is not automatically capable of the same sustained performance as the fastest supported standard.

For accessories, the X20 provides USB4 and USB 3.2 USB-C connectivity. The Legion Go also provides USB-C connectivity. A dock can add external display, wired networking and USB peripherals, but verify the dock’s power-delivery and video requirements before expecting every port to work at full speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ergonomics and portability

The X20’s integrated controls, rubberized grips and balanced-weight design target ordinary handheld play. There are no controller rails to align and no detached pieces to store. Its 7.4-inch screen also keeps the front of the device smaller than the Legion Go’s 8.8-inch format.

The Legion Go’s size is part of its appeal and its cost. The large screen is easier to read, and the kickstand plus detachable controllers support desk play, but the complete kit occupies more space. Detached controllers can improve flexibility when you are seated at a desk, yet they add another item that can be misplaced or left behind.

Neither design is automatically comfortable for every hand. Weight distribution, grip angle, button reach and the distance to the screen are personal factors. If possible, try the controls for several minutes, including shoulder buttons and both stick positions, rather than judging comfort from screen specifications alone.

Choosing by scenario

Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X20 if:

  • You want AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme rather than the older Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform.
  • You value 24GB of memory for demanding games and multitasking.
  • You prefer OLED contrast, HDR and VRR on a 7.4-inch 1080p screen.
  • You want an integrated Xbox-style controller with TMR sticks and impulse triggers.
  • You expect battery capacity to matter during travel and want the larger 80Wh pack.
  • You mainly play from the controls attached to the handheld and do not need a mouse-like FPS setup.

Buy the original Lenovo Legion Go if:

  • An 8.8-inch display is more important to you than OLED contrast.
  • You want controllers that detach for FPS mode, desk play or easier storage.
  • You will use a trackpad, mouse wheel or programmable buttons for Windows and strategy games.
  • You prefer Hall-effect sticks and the Legion Go’s modular control layout.
  • You accept a larger chassis and a 49.2Wh battery in exchange for screen area and flexibility.

Consider neither without checking your priorities if:

  • You need guaranteed long unplugged sessions; capacity does not equal a measured runtime.
  • You expect console-like simplicity; both are Windows handheld PCs that may require game-by-game tuning.
  • You need a guaranteed head-to-head performance lead; there is no matched benchmark set here for the two exact models.

Practical setup choices for better results

  1. Start with a frame-rate target. Decide whether a game feels best at 30, 40, 60 or a higher limit. A stable target can feel smoother than an uncapped frame rate that fluctuates constantly.
  2. Use upscaling before lowering every visual setting. The X20’s published tests show meaningful gains from upscaling at 1080p medium. Test image quality at your preferred internal resolution rather than assuming native rendering is always best.
  3. Match refresh rate to the game. A 120Hz panel is useful for high frame rates and VRR, but running the display at its maximum refresh rate can increase power use when a game cannot approach that rate.
  4. Adjust brightness for the room. High brightness consumes more energy and is rarely necessary indoors. HDR should be evaluated with the game’s own calibration screen.
  5. Keep storage planning realistic. Reserve internal SSD space for Windows updates, shader caches and the games you play most often; use a compatible microSD card for less frequently played titles.
  6. For docked play, check the power path. Use a USB-C charger and dock rated for the handheld’s required power and your intended display output. A dock that provides video but insufficient power can leave the system charging slowly or discharging under load.

What the specifications do not tell you

Processor names do not determine every game’s experience. Cooling behavior, firmware, graphics drivers, memory allocation and the selected wattage can change results. The X20’s PC Gamer figures were recorded at 35W while plugged in, so they should not be read as battery-mode results. Likewise, the Legion Go’s larger display may require more rendering work at its native resolution, while reducing the internal resolution can offset that demand.

Controls also involve trade-offs that cannot be reduced to a feature count. TMR and Hall-effect sticks are different sensing implementations, and long-term reliability depends on the entire assembly rather than the sensor name alone. Detachable controllers expand what the Legion Go can do, but integrated controls reduce setup and packing complexity. The right choice follows how you actually play, not which list has more terms.

Final verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is the better all-round performance-and-efficiency pick. Its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, 24GB memory, 80Wh battery and 7.4-inch OLED give it the stronger foundation for modern games, portable use and Xbox-style handheld play. Published 35W tests show playable results in demanding games, with upscaling providing a substantial boost, but they are not a direct Legion Go comparison.

The original Lenovo Legion Go wins on screen area and control flexibility. Its 8.8-inch panel, detachable controllers, trackpad, mouse wheel and FPS mode are meaningful advantages for desktop navigation, strategy titles and players who want one device to shift between handheld and desk use. Its 49.2Wh battery and larger body are the costs of that design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ROG Xbox Ally X20 have a guaranteed higher FPS than the original Lenovo Legion Go?

No. The X20 uses newer hardware and has more memory, but there is no matched benchmark set for both exact models under identical settings. Treat it as the newer performance platform rather than a guaranteed percentage winner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the X20’s 80Wh battery guaranteed to last longer?

It has substantially more capacity than the Legion Go’s 49.2Wh pack, but capacity is not a runtime measurement. Brightness, refresh rate, wattage, game load and display behavior determine actual hours.

Which handheld is easier for Windows navigation?

The Legion Go is better equipped for desktop use because its controllers include a trackpad, mouse wheel, programmable buttons and an FPS mode. The X20 is simpler for conventional controller-based play.
