Short answer: Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X if you want the better all-around portable Windows PC. Its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, 24GB memory, 80Wh battery, contoured grips and Xbox-focused handheld interface address the biggest compromises of gaming handhelds. Choose the original Lenovo Legion Go instead if its 8.8-inch high-resolution screen, detachable controllers, built-in kickstand or lower discounted price matters more than weight and endurance.
Check the exact model before paying. Listings often mix the original Legion Go with the newer Legion Go 2 and Legion Go S, whose processors, screens and batteries differ.

Original Legion Go identifiers
- AMD Ryzen Z1-series processor options.
- 8.8-inch, 2560×1600-class high-resolution display.
- 49.2Wh battery with fast charging.
- Detachable controllers and an integrated kickstand.
- Common configurations with 16GB memory and either 512GB or 1TB storage.
Do not substitute Legion Go 2 specifications
A Windows Central comparison table for Legion Go 2 lists an 8.8-inch 1920×1200 144Hz OLED, up to 32GB RAM, up to 2TB SSD, a 74Wh battery, a 920g complete weight and two USB4 ports. Those are Legion Go 2 figures, not specifications for the original Legion Go. If a listing shows those numbers, it is a different generation and should be priced and evaluated separately.

The Ally X is the newer, more tightly integrated design. The Legion Go is physically more adaptable: remove the controllers, prop up the display and use it like a small tabletop system, or connect a mouse and keyboard for desktop work.
Battery life: the Ally X has the decisive advantage
Capacity alone does not equal runtime, but the difference between 80Wh and 49.2Wh gives the Ally X much more room for portable play. The original Legion Go’s high-resolution panel can also make the GPU work harder when a game is rendered at its native resolution.
What ASUS actually measured
ASUS reports up to 9.9 hours in light gaming for the Ally X, measured in Hollow Knight: Silksong at 1080p/60, low settings and Silent mode. Its heavy-game result was up to 2.7 hours in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p/60, low settings. These are controlled vendor tests with specified brightness, wireless, frame-rate and power-mode conditions, not a guarantee for every game or setting.
Expect demanding releases, higher brightness, unrestricted frame rates and turbo power modes to reduce either device’s runtime. For flights, commutes and sofa sessions where a charger is inconvenient, the Ally X’s larger reserve is the practical reason to choose it.
How to plan charging
- Use a frame-rate cap and a lower power profile for games that do not need maximum performance.
- Run the Legion Go at a lower render resolution when native 2560×1600 is unnecessary.
- Carry a charger with enough wattage for the handheld’s performance mode; a phone charger may only slow battery loss or charge while idle.
- Treat the quoted 9.9-hour and 2.7-hour figures as upper-bound reference points rather than travel guarantees.
Performance at a sensible resolution
The Ally X uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, while the original Legion Go uses an earlier Ryzen Z1-series platform. The newer chip and 24GB of faster LPDDR5X-8000 memory give the Ally X a stronger specification base, but the available material does not establish a universal frame-rate winner. Game engine, driver version, thermal limits, power mode and resolution can change the result.
Why the display resolution changes the decision
The Ally X’s 1920×1080 screen asks the GPU to render about 2.07 million pixels per frame. The Legion Go’s 2560×1600-class panel asks for roughly twice that workload. Running a game at the Legion’s native resolution can therefore consume performance that would otherwise produce higher frame rates or better image quality at a lower resolution.

The Legion Go can still be an excellent large-screen machine when you use sensible scaling; its high pixel density is an option, not an obligation.
Competitive and older games
Fast esports titles and older games are the strongest cases for taking advantage of a high-refresh display. The Legion Go’s large panel makes aiming, menus and text easier to see at a desk, while the Ally X’s 120Hz 1080p panel needs fewer pixels and is easier to drive consistently. Consistent frame pacing is usually more useful than a high refresh-rate number paired with unstable performance.

Display, grips and physical flexibility
Ally X: lighter, simpler, easier to hold
At 715g, the Ally X is built around fixed, contoured grips. There is no controller mechanism to remove or kickstand to deploy, so the device feels like a conventional gamepad with a screen attached. That simplicity reduces setup steps and potential loose parts during travel.
Its 7-inch 1920×1080 120Hz IPS touchscreen is smaller and less sharp than the Legion Go’s panel. PC Gamer called the Ally X’s 500-nit 1080p display a major disappointment for a roughly $1,000-class handheld. If you play outdoors or in bright rooms, brightness and reflections should be part of your decision rather than an afterthought.

Legion Go: a portable monitor with controls
The original Legion Go’s 8.8-inch screen is the reason many buyers accept its extra bulk. Text, strategy interfaces and desktop windows have more physical space, and the high resolution can look crisp when a game can drive it. The detachable controllers and kickstand also support tabletop play, local multiplayer arrangements and mouse-and-keyboard sessions without holding the entire unit.
Those mechanisms add flexibility but also add handling steps. You must carry the detached controls, find a stable surface for the kickstand and reconnect or position the controllers when switching back to handheld play. Decide whether you will actually use those modes; otherwise you are carrying hardware that does not benefit you.
Windows software and launchers
Both products run Windows 11, so Steam, Epic, PC Game Pass, older desktop applications and ordinary Windows utilities remain available. Neither is limited to a single store.
Ally X handheld mode
Xbox describes a mode that can power on directly into a handheld-optimised gaming experience. It is intended to put games and controller-friendly navigation ahead of the desktop. ASUS also says the Ally X can access your full catalogue, and Windows Central notes that it offers extensive software customisation.

You may still encounter launchers that open desktop windows, games that require a mouse for first-time setup, or anti-cheat and driver updates that behave like they do on a laptop. The advantage is a shorter path to your library, not a console-style guarantee that every title is perfectly adapted.
Legion Go workflow
The Legion Go retains the same broad Windows compatibility, but its large screen and detachable controls can make desktop tasks less cramped. You may prefer that freedom if you frequently install mods, manage files or use the device as a small computer. If your priority is selecting a game and playing immediately, the Ally X’s focused interface is more convenient.
Storage, ports and upgrades
The Ally X includes a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD and supports an off-the-shelf storage upgrade. The original Legion Go was sold with 512GB and 1TB options. Large PC games can consume tens or hundreds of gigabytes, so compare the exact capacity rather than comparing model names.

Both devices provide microSD expansion. A high-speed UHS-II microSD card is a sensible way to hold an additional game library, though internal SSD storage remains preferable for titles that stream assets heavily or have long load times.
The Ally X specification lists one USB4 and one USB-C port, alongside Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. The supplied original-Go specifications do not establish an equivalent port or wireless table, so verify the ports on the exact regional model before buying a dock, external display or wired network adapter.

A discounted original Legion Go can be compelling, but the headline discount is meaningful only when the storage capacity, warranty, battery condition and included accessories match the Ally X configuration you are considering. Used units should be checked for controller wear, display damage, SSD health and a working kickstand before purchase.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X when:
- You mostly play handheld and travel without dependable access to a charger.
- You want fixed grips that feel closer to a traditional controller.
- You prefer a newer AMD platform and 24GB memory for a longer useful life.
- You use Game Pass and want to start in an Xbox-oriented handheld interface.
- You value a lighter 715g device over a larger screen.
Choose the original Legion Go when:
- An 8.8-inch high-resolution display is more important than minimum weight.
- You play strategy, simulation or desktop-heavy games where extra screen area helps.
- You will use the detachable controllers or kickstand for tabletop gaming.
- You find a substantial discount on a verified 512GB or 1TB unit.
- You are comfortable tuning resolution and power settings to suit demanding games.
Think twice about either device when:
- You expect console-like simplicity from every Windows game.
- You need all-day AAA gaming away from a power outlet; vendor battery figures are measured under light or controlled conditions.
- You require a bright outdoor display and cannot accept compromises in the Ally X’s 500-nit 1080p panel.
- You plan to use the device primarily as a desktop PC and need a complete port selection; verify the exact model and budget for a dock.
Setup checklist after purchase
- Confirm the model. In Windows Settings, check the processor, installed memory and SSD capacity against the listing. For the original Legion Go, look for a Ryzen Z1-series chip and a 49.2Wh battery specification rather than Go 2’s 74Wh figures.
- Update Windows and drivers. Open Settings > Windows Update, install pending updates and restart before judging battery life or game performance.
- Install your launchers. Sign in to Xbox, Steam and any other stores you use. Keep game files on the internal SSD first; move less demanding or archived titles to microSD afterward.
- Choose a power profile per game. Start with a balanced or quiet mode for indies and older games, then raise power only when frame pacing or responsiveness requires it.
- Set resolution and frame rate deliberately. Use 1080p on the Ally X. On the Legion Go, test native resolution against a lower scaled resolution and cap frames to a level the device can sustain.
- Test controls and accessories. On the Legion Go, detach and reattach both controllers, test the kickstand and confirm wireless pairing before a trip. On the Ally X, check both USB ports and the microSD reader with the accessories you intend to carry.
- Measure your own battery pattern. Play one representative game at your normal brightness and performance mode, note the drain over 30 minutes and use that result for travel planning instead of relying on a maximum laboratory-style number.
Common buying and setup mistakes
Buying the wrong generation
Do not rely on a product title that says only Legion Go. Compare the processor name, battery capacity, display resolution and included storage. A Go 2 listing can look like a bargain or an overprice depending on which original-Go specification you expected.
Comparing unlike storage capacities
A 1TB Ally X should be compared with a 1TB Legion Go, not a discounted 512GB model. If the cheaper unit needs an SSD upgrade immediately, include that part and installation cost in the decision.
Running every game at maximum resolution
The Legion Go’s 2560×1600-class panel is a capability, not a requirement. Start with the game’s recommended resolution, enable a sensible frame cap and raise image quality only after frame pacing is stable.
Assuming battery claims are universal
ASUS’s 9.9-hour and 2.7-hour results specify the game, resolution, settings and power mode. A different title, brightness level or wireless condition can produce a very different result. Use those numbers to understand the range between light and heavy workloads, not to promise a fixed runtime.
Ignoring the Windows factor
Both handhelds can open ordinary Windows software, but that also means updates, launchers, pop-up windows and occasional controller configuration. Install updates before travel, keep recovery credentials available and carry a small keyboard or mouse if you regularly perform desktop maintenance.
Bottom line
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the safer recommendation for most buyers: it is lighter, has the larger battery, uses the newer Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform and presents Windows games through a more handheld-focused interface. The original Lenovo Legion Go remains the specialist choice for its 8.8-inch high-resolution display, detachable controllers and kickstand. Buy it when those physical features will change how you play, or when a verified discount outweighs the Ally X’s endurance and newer hardware.
