What the Ally X battery has to power
ASUS announced the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X with Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1TB SSD, an 80Wh battery, and a 65W charger. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent runtime measurements. The large battery gives the Ally X more capacity than many handheld PCs, but the processor, display refresh rate, brightness, game frame rate, wireless radios, and standby behavior still determine how quickly that capacity is used.

Update before changing power settings
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Go to Settings > Update Center and install every listed update.
- Run Windows Update and install pending updates.
- Open the Xbox app and let it update before testing a game profile.
ASUS says ASUS, Microsoft, and AMD regularly update software and drivers for efficiency. A power comparison made before an update may no longer describe the current behavior, so perform your baseline test after restarting the Ally X and launching the same game from the same save or benchmark scene.
Choose Silent, Performance, or Turbo by frame-rate need
Silent mode
Silent is ASUS’s lowest-power operating mode. Use it for 2D games, older 3D titles, emulation that is not CPU-heavy, turn-based games, and menus. If the game remains at its target frame rate, Silent generally saves more battery than moving to Performance. Do not select it solely because the name sounds efficient: a mode that causes stutter can deliver a worse experience and may not save power if the game takes longer to complete a workload.
Performance mode
Performance is the practical starting point for demanding games on battery. It balances responsiveness and consumption, and it is the safer first choice when Silent cannot hold a stable target. ASUS specifically recommends moving away from Turbo to Performance or Silent when Turbo is using the Ally’s maximum power draw.

Turbo is ASUS’s highest-power mode. Reserve it for games that genuinely need the additional performance or for plugged-in play. Running Turbo on battery can make a game feel smooth, but its extra draw shortens the session without guaranteeing a visible improvement if the display is already capped at its target refresh rate.
What to do with a manual profile
A custom or manual profile should follow the same rule: begin with the lowest power setting that holds a stable frame rate, then increase power only when frametime spikes or missed targets are visible. No single manual wattage is established for every game, resolution, or patch, so a number copied from another title is not a reliable universal setting. Use the automatic modes and Xbox Default Game Profiles first; customize only after observing a specific game’s behavior.

Turn on Default Game Profiles for supported Xbox games
Xbox Default Game Profiles are designed for battery play. Xbox says each supported profile applies a game-specific TDP and FPS limit. When a title renders above its target, the profile can cap frames to avoid spending power on images the display does not need. When it misses the target, the profile can allow more power to improve smoothness.
- Open the Armoury Crate Command Center Game Bar widget while the game is running.
- Find the Default Game Profiles toggle.
- Enable it, then relaunch the game if the profile does not apply immediately.
- Check the game’s actual frame pacing rather than judging only by its average FPS.
Microsoft announced nearly 70 games in the first Default Game Profiles wave. Availability is therefore title-specific, not a guarantee that every installed game will receive a profile. If no profile appears, use an operating mode and a deliberate FPS cap instead.
Cap FPS instead of rendering unused frames
Set a 30, 40, 60, or game-profile target that the title can hold consistently. A cap is most useful when the game otherwise renders well above the refresh or frame rate you actually want. It lowers GPU work, reduces heat, and can prevent short bursts of unnecessary power use.
Choose stability over the highest number. A locked 40 FPS presentation can feel better than an uneven 60 FPS that repeatedly falls into the 30s. A 30 FPS cap is often appropriate for slower strategy or role-playing games; 60 FPS suits action games when the Ally X can sustain it. The correct target depends on the game and your tolerance for input latency, so test movement, camera pans, and combat rather than relying only on a menu counter.
Disable CPU Boost for games that do not need it
For easy-to-run games, open Armoury Crate > Settings > Performance > Eco Assist and turn CPU Boost off. ASUS says this improves efficiency but can lower performance in demanding games. Indie and 2D games may show little or no visible loss because they do not need the extra CPU frequency.

After changing the option, play a representative section for several minutes. If frame pacing remains stable and controls feel unchanged, leave CPU Boost off for that profile. If a simulation, strategy game, shader-compilation sequence, or busy hub begins to hitch, restore CPU Boost or return to Performance mode.
Reduce display and lighting power without changing game performance
Lower brightness indoors
ASUS identifies the display backlight as a significant power user. Use the brightness slider in the Command Center and reduce it to the lowest level that remains comfortable in the room. Outdoor use may require a higher setting, while a dim indoor room often does not.
Turn off RGB when it adds no value
Disabling the Ally X’s RGB lighting saves a small amount of power. It will not transform runtime by itself, but it is a no-cost choice when the handheld is being used in daylight or while connected to an external display.
Stop battery drain while the Ally X is idle
Sleep is convenient for short interruptions, but a long pause can still consume charge. Configure Windows and Armoury Crate for the way you actually use the handheld.
- In Windows Settings > System > Power & Battery, set the display to turn off after a few minutes.
- In the same area, assign the power button to Hibernate if you want a quick, low-drain pause that preserves your session.
- For a pause lasting hours or an overnight trip, choose Hibernate or Shut down from the power menu.
- In Armoury Crate > Settings > Performance > Operating Mode > Eco Assist, enable Modern Standby Assistant and Extreme Standby Mode.
Use hibernate or shutdown when the handheld is going into a bag. A device that appears asleep but is still connected or waking periodically can lose a meaningful portion of its charge before the next session.

Protect long-term battery capacity
Battery Care Mode
Battery Care Mode limits charging to 80%. ASUS says the lower charge ceiling reduces battery wear over time, at the cost of less immediate runtime. It is a sensible default when the Ally X spends most of its life on a desk or connected to a charger.
Instant Full-Charge Mode
When a long unplugged session is planned, use Instant Full-Charge Mode to restore a temporary 100% charge for 24 hours. This gives you the available capacity for travel without leaving the battery at its highest state of charge every day.

Cloud streaming, Xbox Remote Play, and PC streaming can reduce the Ally X’s local rendering workload because the game is rendered elsewhere. ASUS says this uses much less device battery than rendering a demanding game locally. The trade-off is network dependence: wireless quality, latency, service access, and the host PC’s availability determine whether the streamed experience is acceptable.
Streaming is most useful for a graphics-heavy game that would otherwise require Turbo. It is less compelling when the local title already runs comfortably in Silent mode, because the network connection and video decoding still consume power and may introduce input delay.
How to troubleshoot a game that still feels slow
It stutters in Silent
Switch to Performance first, then keep the FPS cap at the highest stable target. If the game is supported, enable its Default Game Profile. Do not jump directly to Turbo unless the other two options cannot hold the target.

It runs smoothly but battery falls quickly
Check for an uncapped frame rate, excessive brightness, RGB lighting, or CPU Boost on a lightweight game. Apply a 30, 40, or 60 FPS cap and retest the same scene. Also verify that the Ally X did not remain in standby during a long pause.
The profile does not appear
Confirm that the game is one of the supported titles, that Armoury Crate SE and the Xbox app are current, and that Default Game Profiles is enabled in the Command Center Game Bar widget. Unsupported games require manual mode and FPS decisions.
Performance drops after enabling CPU Boost off
Restore CPU Boost for that game or switch back to Performance. The option is intended for easy games; demanding or CPU-limited titles can lose frame rate when it is disabled.

What the published runtime figures do—and do not—show
Xbox Wire reported nearly one additional hour in Hollow Knight: Silksong versus Performance mode while retaining 120 FPS when using the profile feature. That is an Xbox example of profile behavior, not a universal ROG Xbox Ally X runtime claim.
ASUS also published 5.4-hour Hollow Knight: Silksong and 2.3-hour Forza Horizon 5 results, but those measurements were for the 60Wh ROG Xbox Ally (RC73YA), under specified 720p, brightness, and connectivity conditions. They are not Ally X results and should not be used to predict the 80Wh Ally X’s battery life.
