- PC Game Pass: the Windows Xbox app can install the PC versions included with your subscription. The catalog is not identical to the console catalog, and each game’s PC requirements still apply.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: a supported browser or app streams games from Microsoft’s servers. Image quality and latency depend on the network, service availability and controller support.
- Remote Play: the handheld streams games from your own Xbox console. The console must be configured for remote features and remain connected; this is different from installing a native PC game.
Windows handhelds generally offer the broadest access to the Xbox app, Play Anywhere titles and other PC storefronts. Steam Deck OLED uses SteamOS and is tightly integrated with Steam instead. A game that runs on Xbox is not automatically a native Steam Deck game: you need a Linux-compatible PC release, a supported compatibility layer, cloud streaming or Remote Play. Steam Deck OLED: best for SteamOS and an OLED screen
Why it is a strong alternative
Steam Deck OLED is the natural choice when your library is centered on Steam and you want a console-like interface without managing a full Windows desktop. SteamOS puts the store, downloads, controller settings and suspend/resume controls in one environment. The OLED display is its clearest hardware differentiator in this group, making dark scenes, menus and handheld-friendly games look more vivid than on a conventional LCD panel.
Its large Steam library is a practical advantage, but compatibility labels are not a guarantee that every feature works perfectly. Multiplayer anti-cheat, third-party launchers, unsupported codecs and games designed only for Windows can require configuration or fail entirely. Check the current compatibility information for the specific title you plan to play, especially competitive games.

Xbox console ownership does not by itself install a game on Steam Deck. Xbox access can come from a separately purchased PC version on a supported storefront, Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser, or Remote Play from an Xbox console. A Play Anywhere entitlement helps when the title also has a Windows PC version, but SteamOS is not Windows and the Xbox app is not the native SteamOS launcher.
This makes Steam Deck OLED a poor choice if your main requirement is “turn on the handheld and install my Xbox-console library.” It is a good choice if Xbox is one part of a broader Steam library and streaming is acceptable for the console-only portion.

- Choose Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-first library, an OLED display and a focused handheld interface.

Lenovo Legion Go 2: best Windows alternative for a larger-screen setup
Why it is compelling
Legion Go 2 is a Windows handheld in the same current comparison set as ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI Claw A8. Windows gives it access to the Xbox app, PC Game Pass, Play Anywhere PC releases, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Remote Play and other PC storefronts. That flexibility is valuable when your games are split among Xbox, Steam and additional launchers.

Its positioning is especially attractive to players who prefer a larger display. A larger panel can make strategy interfaces, desktop controls and text easier to read, but it also increases the physical size you carry and can demand more power at a given brightness and resolution. Use the device’s performance profiles rather than assuming the highest setting is best for every game.
Check the exact configuration
“Legion Go 2” is not enough information to identify every retail unit. Confirm the regional listing’s processor, memory, storage, display resolution and refresh rate before buying. Those specifications affect frame-rate headroom, texture settings, battery life and the amount of space available for large installs. Warranty terms and retailer support also vary by country.
Xbox setup steps
- Complete Windows setup and install all firmware, graphics and Windows updates.
- Sign in to the Xbox app with the Microsoft account that owns your Play Anywhere games or carries your Game Pass subscription.
- Open your library and install a PC version only when the title is listed for Windows PC. A console-only entitlement will not create a PC installation.
- For cloud play, open the supported Xbox cloud service, sign in, connect a controller and test the network before starting a long session.

The A8 name matters. MSI has used several Claw model names, and processor, memory, storage, display and firmware can differ between suffixes or regions. Verify the exact processor and model suffix in the retailer’s specification sheet; do not treat a review of a different Claw as proof of performance for the A8.

When it makes sense
- It is a sensible shortlist entry if you want Windows, Xbox app access and the ability to install games from multiple stores.
- Compare sustained performance limits, fan noise, battery capacity and charger behavior rather than relying on a peak APU figure.
- Confirm that the model includes the ports and storage expansion you need for a dock, headset, microSD card or external drive.
As with every Windows handheld, a Play Anywhere label solves the ownership problem only for eligible games with Windows versions. It does not turn every Xbox console title into a native PC install.

Performance, battery and display: compare the limits, not just the headline
APU and sustained power
Handheld performance is constrained by heat, battery and the device’s sustained power limit. A higher theoretical APU specification may not deliver higher frame rates if the chassis cannot cool it or the battery cannot maintain the required wattage. Compare results for the exact configuration, then check whether the manufacturer exposes quiet, balanced and performance modes.
Use a lower resolution, an in-game frame-rate cap and a sensible power profile for longer sessions. Plugging in can change the available performance, but it also increases heat and may require the supplied charger or a USB-C charger with adequate wattage.

OLED improves contrast and perceived color, while LCD panels can still be preferable for cost, brightness characteristics or reduced concern about static interface elements. Controls and portability
Look at grip shape, stick and trigger placement, button feel, speaker position and total weight. - USB-C dock: verify video output, USB data ports, Ethernet and charging pass-through. A dock that cannot supply enough power may charge slowly or limit performance.
- Charger: match the handheld’s required USB-C power profile. A phone charger may power the device only slowly or fail to sustain gaming load.
- Protective case: choose one shaped for the exact handheld, including its vents, triggers, detachable parts or kickstand.
- Power bank: check USB-C output wattage and capacity. A high-capacity bank with insufficient output can still be ineffective during play.

Anti-cheat or launcher support may be the cause. Check the game’s current compatibility information and developer requirements. A Windows handheld may avoid that specific SteamOS limitation, but it still cannot bypass an account, region or service restriction.
“Battery life collapses in performance mode.”
Reduce the power profile, screen brightness, resolution or frame-rate target. Close launchers and overlays you do not need, and use the correct charger when plugged in. Battery capacity and runtime vary by game, brightness and performance setting; a single advertised figure is not a universal result.
“The dock works for USB but not the display.”
Check the dock’s video standard, cable, monitor input and handheld firmware. Confirm that the dock passes enough power while video and USB devices are active.
Which alternative should you buy?
