Falcon 9 launched 21 Starlink satellites, including the constellation’s 7,001st spacecraft, while ABL cut a significant but unspecified portion of its workforce after losing an RS1 rocket during a ground test. The contrast was between a mature, high-cadence operation and a startup managing an expensive development setback during tighter capital markets.
This is a historical account of Ars Technica’s Rocket Report Edition 7.10, published September 6, 2024—not a claim about the companies’ status in 2026. Read the original report.
The Starlink 8-11 milestone
On September 5, 2024, Falcon 9 launched the Starlink 8-11 mission from Florida with 21 satellites. The mission’s tally reportedly included Starlink spacecraft number 7,001, crossing the program’s 7,000-satellite cumulative launch mark. “7,000th Starlink” is the rounded headline formulation; the underlying count described in the report was the 7,001st satellite.
Thirteen of the 21 spacecraft were identified as Direct to Cell satellites. That is a specialized Starlink capability intended to connect compatible ordinary smartphones through satellite links; it should not be read as a promise that every phone receives full conventional Starlink broadband service.

The Falcon 9 first stage also landed successfully. The report described it as SpaceX’s third successful booster touchdown in one week, following a failed landing attempt on August 28. The mission’s launch and recovery details are also listed by Space Launch Now.
What “7,000 Starlinks” does—and does not—mean
The headline number is cumulative. It counts spacecraft launched over the life of the constellation, not a live count of satellites delivering service.
| Term | Meaning in this report |
|---|---|
| Satellites launched | The cumulative total placed into orbit since Starlink deployment began; the September 5 mission carried the reported 7,001st spacecraft. |
| Satellites still in orbit | A smaller number because some spacecraft have failed, deorbited, or been retired. |
| Satellites operational | The subset actually providing network service at a particular time; the report does not establish a 7,000-satellite operational total. |
| Direct to Cell | A specialized subset designed for satellite-to-phone connectivity rather than the standard Starlink user-terminal service. |
SpaceX had therefore launched more than 7,000 Starlink spacecraft in total; that did not mean 7,000 were active or even still in orbit on that date. The distinction matters because large constellations continuously replace failed, retired, or deorbited satellites.

Why the milestone mattered operationally
The milestone was significant less as a round number than as evidence of an integrated operating model. SpaceX manufactures the satellites, supplies its own large launch demand, flies Falcon 9 at high cadence, and routinely recovers first stages. An internal customer reduces the need to fill every flight with outside payloads while the constellation is being expanded and replenished.
- Cadence: frequent Starlink flights keep spacecraft deployment and replacement moving.
- Reuse: routine booster recovery lowers the hardware cost and turnaround burden compared with expendable launches.
- Vertical integration: launch, spacecraft production, and network deployment are coordinated inside one company.
- Scale without overclaiming: the launch count alone does not prove profitability, universal coverage, or uninterrupted service.
ABL’s RS1 loss and layoffs
ABL Space Systems lost its second RS1 rocket in a fire after a static-fire test on July 19, 2024, at the Pacific Spaceport Complex–Alaska on Kodiak Island. This was a ground-test vehicle loss, not an orbital launch failure.
On August 30, CEO Harry O’Hanley announced layoffs on LinkedIn. The report did not give a headcount or percentage, describing the reduction only as a significant portion of the workforce. O’Hanley said the company was cutting costs after the test incident while also responding to changing market conditions and more limited access to capital.

The immediate loss was not the whole financial story. ABL had already been moving toward leaner operations since 2023, with smaller teams, restrained hiring, and more conservative spending. The test failure increased the pressure on a company that still had to fund vehicle development, testing, manufacturing, and future launch attempts.
The launch-startup funding squeeze
The report placed ABL’s retrenchment in a broader post-boom market. Public listings and special-purpose acquisition companies had supplied visibility and capital to several space businesses, but investors increasingly demanded evidence of flight heritage, paying customers, repeatable production, and a credible path to revenue.
Its examples included Virgin Galactic, Virgin Orbit, Astra, and Rocket Lab. In the September 2024 account, Virgin Orbit had entered bankruptcy, Astra had returned to private ownership, Virgin Galactic’s share price was far below its pandemic-era peak, and Rocket Lab was described as the strongest performer among the listed launch companies discussed. Those descriptions belong to that 2024 snapshot and should not be treated as unchanged corporate status in 2026.

The underlying divide was not simply “successful company versus failed company.” It was the difference between a provider already generating frequent launch activity and companies still spending heavily to reach dependable operations. A technically credible rocket can still run short of cash before it achieves a sustainable cadence.

Vega’s final flight
Europe’s original Vega rocket flew for the final time from French Guiana, carrying the Copernicus environmental-monitoring satellite Sentinel-2C into its intended orbit. The larger, more capable Vega-C was to take over the role.
Blue Origin prepares New Glenn
Blue Origin was moving New Glenn’s second stage toward the launch pad and preparing a hot-fire test of its two BE-3U engines. The recovery vessel Jacklyn had reached Port Canaveral. NASA’s ESCAPADE Mars mission imposed schedule pressure, with an October 13–21, 2024 launch window cited in the report. These were preparations and a forecast, not a completed launch outcome.

Relativity adjusts Terran R manufacturing
Relativity Space said Aeon-R engine development was progressing, while additive-manufacturing challenges meant significant portions of Terran R production were expected to be outsourced. The business case depended heavily on first-stage reuse, with a nominal goal of flying each stage 20 times. The company was still targeting a 2026 debut when the report was published; that target was not a verified result.
Europa Clipper clears a transistor concern
NASA completed testing of suspect transistors in Europa Clipper’s power-supply system and concluded they could support the baseline mission. The spacecraft was scheduled to launch on Falcon Heavy during a window opening October 10, 2024, another historical schedule cited at publication.
Virgin Galactic shareholder lawsuit
A newly unsealed shareholder lawsuit accused Richard Branson of misleading investors about Virgin Galactic’s spacecraft and selling substantial quantities of stock. Branson and Virgin Galactic disputed the allegations, and Branson’s representative called the suit meritless. These were claims in litigation, not established findings.
How to read the 2024 snapshot
The week’s stories were connected by execution risk. SpaceX’s 7,001st cumulative Starlink launch reflected a system already operating at scale, with an internal customer and routinely recovered boosters. ABL’s RS1 loss showed how one ground-test accident can collide with pre-existing cost controls and a less forgiving funding environment. Vega, New Glenn, Terran R, and Europa Clipper illustrated different points on the path from development to flight.
Because the source is dated September 6, 2024, later constellation counts, ABL staffing or financing, New Glenn flights, Terran R progress, Europa Clipper’s launch, and the Virgin Galactic case require separate, up-to-date verification. The evidence here supports the historical comparison—not a current 2026 status report.
The Bottom Line
The central lesson of the September 2024 Rocket Report was the widening gap between a high-cadence, reusable launch operation with a built-in customer and newer companies still trying to finance reliable flight operations. SpaceX’s milestone measured cumulative deployment; ABL’s layoffs measured the cost of not yet having that operating scale.
