Rocket Money Rowan Privacy Settings: What Financial Data It Can Access and How to Limit It

Rowan can use the information already available in your Rocket Money account, plus data from financial accounts and Google services that you specifically connected and authorized. It is not a universal window into every account you own. Rocket Money says Rowan does not receive your bank username or password through its connection process, because Plaid handles the credential exchange and returns an encrypted token. For supported actions, Rowan needs your direction, authorization and confirmation.

You can reduce that access in layers: revoke Google or Gmail access, unlink individual financial accounts, turn off Rowan-related notifications, delete your Rocket Money account, or submit a formal privacy request. Rocket Money’s published controls do not describe one master switch that disables every Rowan capability at once.

What Rowan is and who receives it

Rowan is Rocket Money’s AI-powered financial assistant. Rocket Money includes it with Premium+ for the primary user. Rowan communicates through text or RCS and can answer money questions, explain spending, organize eligible transactions, review budgets, track trials, help with subscriptions and bills, and change some preferences, including notification settings and connected Gmail access.

Its usable data scope follows your Rocket Money account and the connections you approved. If an account is not in Rocket Money and has not been authorized for a Rowan-enabled feature, Rowan is not described as having access to it. The exact fields available can vary by financial institution and by the permissions you granted.

What “connected” means

There are two important layers:

  • Rocket Money data: Information already present in your Rocket Money account, such as imported transactions, subscriptions, bills, budgets and preferences.
  • Authorized connections: Data from bank, card or other financial accounts you linked, and Google data you approved through Google’s OAuth consent screen.

That means Rowan’s scope is account-specific, not a complete profile of your finances. A second bank, brokerage, card or Gmail account remains outside the documented scope unless you connect it and authorize the relevant feature.

What financial data Rowan can use

Data source What Rowan may use it for What limits the scope
Rocket Money account Answering money questions, explaining spending, reviewing budgets, organizing eligible transactions, and managing supported preferences Only information available in your Rocket Money account
Linked financial accounts Viewing transaction data, identifying subscriptions and bills, tracking trials, and supporting eligible subscription or bill workflows Only accounts you linked and authorized; available fields vary by institution and connection
Google account or Gmail connection Identifying and organizing financial transactions, subscriptions and billing information for enabled features Google OAuth scopes requested for the features you enabled
Bank login credentials Not supplied to Rowan through Rocket Money’s bank-connection flow Plaid receives the credentials and returns an encrypted token; Rocket Money says it never stores the bank login information

Transactions, subscriptions and billing records

Rocket Money describes Rowan as using financial information to identify and organize transactions, subscriptions and billing information. That can include the transaction records that Rocket Money has imported from a linked account, along with subscription or bill details that Rocket Money has identified. It does not promise that every institution exposes every field or that Rowan can see every type of account data. The practical question is whether the account is connected, which permissions were granted, and what data Rocket Money received from that institution.

Budgets and preferences

Because Rowan operates inside Rocket Money, it can work with budgets and other information already stored there. Rocket Money also lists supported preference changes, such as managing notifications or connected Gmail access. Those capabilities are still bounded by the account and feature permissions you have enabled; they are not evidence that Rowan can administer unrelated services or accounts.

Can Rowan read your Gmail?

Only if you connect a Google account and grant the requested permission. Rocket Money’s Terms say it requests only the scopes necessary for features you enabled and does so after Google’s OAuth consent flow. In practical terms, Rowan does not receive blanket Gmail access merely because you use Rocket Money or Premium+.

What Google data is used for

Rocket Money says Google-connected data can help Rowan identify and organize financial transactions, subscriptions and billing information. The permission is feature-based: the scopes presented by Google should correspond to the enabled Rocket Money functionality. The exact messages or records available therefore depend on the scopes shown during consent and the Google account you selected.

How to check or remove the connection

Rocket Money documents two revocation routes:

  1. Open the Rowan conversation and use its control for connected Google or Gmail access.
  2. Open your Google Account security settings, find Rocket Money in the list of connected applications, and revoke its access there.

Rocket Money says associated data is deleted after Google access is revoked, except where retention is required for legal, security or dispute-resolution reasons. Revoking OAuth access stops the authorization; it does not override a retention obligation that applies to information already held.

Does Rowan know your bank password?

Rocket Money’s security explanation says it never sees your bank login information. In the normal connection flow, Plaid receives the credentials, establishes the connection with the financial institution, and returns a secure encrypted token that allows Rocket Money to view transaction data. Rowan receives the resulting account data available through Rocket Money, not your bank username or password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters: a token permitting transaction retrieval is different from the password used to create the connection. If you later unlink the financial account, Rocket Money says revoking access to financial information is simple and immediate. The unlink action addresses that account connection; it is separate from changing a bank password at the bank itself.

What Rowan can do, and when it must ask you

Rowan is not described as an autonomous operator with unlimited authority. Rocket Money’s help documentation states: “Rowan requires both your direction and authorization before taking any action on your behalf.” For supported tasks, it should ask for confirmation before proceeding.

Examples of supported assistance

  • Answering questions about spending and explaining transaction activity.
  • Organizing eligible transactions and reviewing budgets.
  • Tracking free trials and identifying subscriptions or bills.
  • Helping initiate subscription, cancellation, refund or bill-related workflows when the feature and account qualify.
  • Managing certain preferences, including notifications or connected Gmail access.

The confirmation boundary

Direction means you tell Rowan what you want; authorization means you approve the resulting action. Rocket Money says both are required. It also warns that Rowan may make mistakes, so check names, dates, amounts, recipients and the exact service affected before confirming an important change. A confirmation step is a safety boundary, not a guarantee that an automated workflow will be error-free.

How to limit or revoke Rowan access

Choose the control that matches what you want to stop. Revoking a Google connection, unlinking one bank account, muting messages and deleting the whole Rocket Money account have different scopes and consequences.

1. Revoke Google or Gmail access

  1. In the Rowan thread, open the control for your connected Google or Gmail account.
  2. Choose the option to revoke that access and complete the confirmation.
  3. If you prefer to manage it outside Rocket Money, open Google Account security settings, select the connected-app entry for Rocket Money, and revoke access there.

Use this route when your concern is email or Google data. Rocket Money says associated data is deleted after revocation, subject to legal, security and dispute-resolution retention exceptions.

2. Unlink an individual financial account

  1. Open your Rocket Money account and go to the area where connected financial accounts are managed.
  2. Select the bank, card or other financial account you no longer want connected.
  3. Choose the unlink or revoke-access control and confirm.

Rocket Money describes this revocation as simple and immediate. It stops access through that connection, while the rest of your Rocket Money account and any other linked accounts remain separate controls.

3. Reduce messages and alerts

If you want to keep your account connections but receive fewer prompts, change notification preferences rather than unlinking data:

  • Mobile app: Settings > Notifications & Alerts.
  • Website: Settings > Notifications.

Rocket Money lists separate toggles for alerts, tips and updates. Turn off the category you do not want. This changes communications; it does not revoke Rowan’s access to connected financial or Google data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Delete the Rocket Money account

Account deletion is the broadest self-service control described by Rocket Money. The company states that deleting a Rocket Money account deletes associated data, subject to retention obligations in its applicable policies. Use this option when you no longer want the Rocket Money service at all, not merely when you want to remove one connection or stop notifications.

5. Submit a privacy-rights request

Rocket Money’s privacy-rights help page describes an online request process for asking to access, delete or correct personal data. This is the appropriate route when you need a formal data-rights request, want to correct information, or need an answer about data held beyond the normal in-app controls.

Which control should you use?

Goal Control Scope reduced Reversibility and timing Coverage
Stop Google or Gmail access Revoke in Rowan or Google Account security Google connection authorized for Rowan-enabled features Revocation is immediate; associated-data deletion has stated retention exceptions Google connection only
Stop new data from one bank or card Unlink the financial account That individual financial-account connection Rocket Money describes access revocation as immediate; reconnecting later is a separate authorization Selected financial account only
Stop or reduce prompts Notification toggles Alerts, tips or updates, depending on the toggle Reversible in Settings Communications only; data access remains unchanged
Remove the service and associated account data Delete Rocket Money account Whole Rocket Money account Deletion is subject to applicable retention obligations Broader than a Rowan or connection-level change
Request access, correction or deletion Online privacy-rights request Personal-data rights request, including information not covered by a simple toggle Handled through Rocket Money’s privacy process Broader privacy-rights coverage

What “turn off Rowan” actually involves

Rocket Money’s published documentation does not describe a single “disable all AI access” switch. Treat Rowan privacy as a set of independent layers instead of looking for one master setting.

If you want to keep Rocket Money but remove Google data

Revoke the Google connection in the Rowan thread or Google Account security settings. Leave your financial-account links in place if you still want Rocket Money’s transaction and budgeting features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want to stop Rowan using a particular bank or card

Unlink that financial account. Other connected accounts remain governed by their own links, so review the full connected-account list if you want to reduce the overall data set.

If you only want fewer Rowan messages

Use the notification controls. Muting alerts, tips or updates is less disruptive than revoking a data connection, but it does not turn off data processing associated with enabled features.

If you want to leave Rocket Money entirely

Delete the Rocket Money account and rely on the company’s stated deletion process, including any retention exceptions required by law, security needs or dispute resolution.

Common privacy mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing notification settings with data revocation

A quiet inbox does not mean a disconnected account. Notification toggles govern messages and updates; they do not remove Google or financial-account permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming unlinking erases every historical record

Unlinking stops access through the selected connection. Rocket Money’s documentation separately addresses deletion and retention, so use account deletion or a privacy-rights request when your goal is removal or confirmation of stored personal data.

Treating confirmation as automatic correctness

Rowan asks for your authorization, but Rocket Money says it may make mistakes. Review consequential actions before approving them, especially cancellation, refund, bill and subscription workflows.

Expecting a bank-password reset to control Rowan

Rocket Money says it does not store your bank login credentials in its connection flow. To control Rowan’s access to transaction data, use the Rocket Money unlink control for the account; a bank-password change is a separate banking-security action.

Revoking the wrong Google account

People who use multiple Google accounts should confirm which account appears in Google’s connected-app list before revoking access. Removing permission from one Google account does not automatically address another account that was separately authorized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical privacy sequence

When you are unsure which control fits, work from the narrowest change to the broadest:

  1. Identify whether the concern is Google data, a specific financial account, messages, or the entire Rocket Money account.
  2. For Google data, revoke the Google connection through Rowan or Google Account security settings.
  3. For one bank or card, unlink that account in Rocket Money.
  4. For unwanted prompts, adjust Settings > Notifications & Alerts in the mobile app or Settings > Notifications on the website.
  5. If you need formal access, correction or deletion, submit the online privacy-rights request.
  6. If you no longer want Rocket Money at all, delete the account and account for the retention exceptions described in its policies.

This layered approach lets you remove the specific permission that concerns you without treating every privacy question as an all-or-nothing account deletion.
