Use the least-privileged phone location permission that still allows pickup, enter a pickup point manually when available, leave optional analytics sharing disabled, and watch the vehicle’s privacy indicators. Tesla and Waymo both retain narrow exceptions for support, occupancy, safety and emergency functions. After a trip, use each company’s account tools to review, download or delete data where local law allows.
What you can and cannot control
Robotaxi privacy has two separate layers. Your phone and account provide dispatch information such as pickup, destination and device location. The vehicle itself has cameras, microphones and other sensors that support automated driving, safety and customer assistance. Phone settings can reduce app-level collection; they cannot switch off sensors that the vehicle needs to operate safely.

The practical goal is therefore data minimization, not complete invisibility. Disable optional uses, avoid granting continuous phone access when a less permissive setting works, and understand the events that can temporarily activate a sensor.

Limit location data before you request a ride
Use the least-privileged phone permission
Open your phone’s app-permission page for the robotaxi app and choose the least permissive location option that still supports your pickup. Depending on the operating system, that may be an approximate location, “while using the app” access, or a one-time permission. The exact labels vary by phone and operating-system version, so verify that the app can still place the vehicle at the selected pickup point.

Tesla states that precise location can be processed when the app is opened, when a ride is requested, or until the ride ends, depending on the permission you grant. That means denying background access can reduce continuous device-location sharing, but it does not eliminate location processing during the ride workflow.
Enter the pickup point manually when Tesla offers it
Tesla’s app allows manual pickup entry. Type the pickup location rather than granting a map-based location fix if you do not want the app to use your phone’s precise position for that step. This can reduce dependence on continuous device location during pickup, but it does not make the trip anonymous: the service still needs the ride’s pickup, destination and vehicle location to dispatch and route the car.
Manual entry works best when you can identify a safe, legal curb or designated pickup zone. A vague landmark can cause the car to stop in the wrong place, trigger a support interaction or require you to re-enable location so the vehicle can find you.
Understand what location remains necessary
- Dispatch needs a pickup point and destination.
- Routing uses the vehicle’s live position and the planned route.
- The app may associate device location with your account and ride, even when you entered the pickup manually.
- Changing phone permissions does not erase historical trip records already held in the account.
Waymo similarly describes collection of pickup and drop-off details, route information and device-location data. Precise mobile location is collected with permission, so the same least-privilege approach applies: grant only the access needed for the pickup method you choose.
Tesla: control cabin camera, microphone and analytics
Normal rides start with cabin sensors off
Tesla’s Robotaxi Privacy Notice says, “Cabin camera and microphone are not used by default (until needed).” For a routine ride, that means the interior camera and microphone are not continuously active simply because you are sitting in the vehicle.
There are important exceptions. A support request, occupancy detection or a safety event can activate the cabin camera. Support interactions or safety events can also transmit audio associated with your account. Early-access riders in limited areas may have broader default collection of exterior-camera, cabin-camera and sound-detection data, so check your program status rather than assuming the standard settings apply.

Leave optional analytics sharing off
In the Robotaxi app, look for the optional controls named Cabin Camera Analytics and Sound Detection Analytics. Leave each switch off unless you deliberately want to contribute cabin video or sound data for analytics. These controls are separate from the vehicle’s ability to use a sensor for an immediate support, occupancy or safety need.

- Find Cabin Camera Analytics and confirm that it is off.
- Find Sound Detection Analytics and confirm that it is off.
- Recheck the settings after an app update, a program change or enrollment in an early-access service.
Use the on-screen indicators
Tesla provides a visible signal while these sensors are active. A green indicator in the touchscreen menu bar means the cabin camera is active. An orange indicator means the microphone is being used; Tesla’s notice specifically states, “An orange indicator is displayed on the touchscreen menu bar when the microphone is being used.”
If an indicator appears unexpectedly, note the time and what was happening. A support call, a safety alert, a passenger-count check or an occupancy-related event can explain activation. If none applies, use the in-app support channel and ask what event triggered the sensor rather than attempting to cover the lens or block the microphone.
Know the safety-event recording limit
Tesla says a safety-event camera clip can be up to 30 seconds. This is a maximum recording length, not a statement about how often clips are created. Such clips may be transmitted and linked to your account even though ordinary external-camera processing is normally performed locally.
Waymo: microphone and interior-camera rules
Microphones are conditional, not continuously open
Waymo’s rider guidance states: “The microphones inside the car are only on during voice calls with Rider Support or when you actively choose to enable microphones inside the car.” Do not enable the cabin microphones unless you need to speak with support or intentionally want that feature.

Interior cameras have operator-controlled uses
Waymo describes interior cameras as tools for cleanliness checks, lost-item recovery, emergency assistance, rule compliance and service improvement. Support can review video in defined circumstances after an issue is reported; in an urgent situation, support may access live video. There is no described rider switch that permanently disables the interior camera.
Waymo also says, “We do not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals.” Its August 24, 2026 statement explains that cameras are designed for core functions such as mapping routes, delivering services safely and improving the technology, not for surveillance or identifying people through facial recognition or other biometric technologies.
What to do if you are uncomfortable with a camera review
- Do not obstruct the lens; obstruction can interfere with emergency help, lost-item recovery or a service investigation.
- Report the specific trip and incident through Rider Support.
- Ask what footage was accessed, why it was needed and what account or trip record it is associated with.
- Use Waymo’s privacy-rights process for a formal data request, deletion request or account question.
External cameras and vehicle sensors are different
Neither provider describes an ordinary rider-controlled switch for the exterior cameras used by the autonomous-driving system. Tesla says external-camera processing is normally local, but short clips around safety events can be transmitted and linked to the account. Waymo describes exterior cameras as part of the driving system. Turning off phone location, declining analytics or ending a support call does not disable those safety sensors.

A physical lens cover, microphone blocker, phone pouch or privacy screen cannot reliably control operator-managed vehicle hardware. It may obstruct a safety view, prevent support from seeing an emergency, interfere with pickup or violate the vehicle’s ride rules. For the same reason, do not place objects over a cabin camera or hide a microphone opening.
A privacy checklist for the ride itself
Before requesting
- Review the robotaxi app’s location permission and select the least-privileged option that still supports pickup.
- Use manual pickup entry in Tesla when it is practical and safe.
- Confirm that Tesla’s Cabin Camera Analytics and Sound Detection Analytics are off if you do not want optional sharing.
- Check whether you are enrolled in an early-access program with broader default collection.
- Remove unnecessary account members or shared devices that could expose trip history.
While riding
- Watch Tesla’s green camera and orange microphone indicators.
- For Waymo, keep the interior microphone disabled unless you actively need it or start a Rider Support call.
- Assume that a support request, emergency or safety event can create a limited recording even when optional analytics are off.
- Keep conversations, documents and screens containing sensitive information out of view when possible.
- Do not cover cameras, block microphones or interfere with vehicle equipment.
After arriving
- Review the trip record and any support interaction while the details are fresh.
- Use the provider’s privacy channel if a sensor indicator appeared without an obvious reason.
- Change permissions back to your preferred setting if you temporarily granted more access for pickup.
- Request deletion or a copy of personal data when your local privacy law and the provider’s process allow it.
Delete, download or restrict data after the trip
Waymo account controls
Waymo provides controls to view or edit trip history, change location permissions, delete the account and download a copy of personal data. Use those controls when you want to remove old trip details, inspect what is retained or move your records to another service.
Waymo also offers Do Not Sell or Share and universal choice-signal options for targeted advertising. A browser- or device-based signal may apply only to the browser or device where it was submitted, so repeat the choice on other devices you use.

Tesla privacy requests
Tesla directs riders to Tesla Account controls, device permissions, in-app sharing settings and its privacy-request channel. Depending on local law, you can request access, correction, restriction or deletion of personal data, or withdraw consent. A request does not necessarily erase information that must be retained for safety, legal compliance, dispute handling or an active service relationship.
When submitting a request, identify the account email, trip date, approximate pickup area and the type of data involved. A precise description helps distinguish ordinary trip data from a safety-event clip or a support recording.

Can a robotaxi hear a private conversation?
It depends on the provider and event. Tesla’s cabin microphone is off by default for normal rides but can activate for support or safety needs, and optional Sound Detection Analytics is controlled in the app. Waymo says its interior microphones are on only during Rider Support calls or when you actively enable them. No setting guarantees that an emergency or support interaction will never create audio.
Can I turn off the camera in a Tesla or Waymo robotaxi?
Tesla’s cabin camera is off by default and its Cabin Camera Analytics setting can remain off, but support, occupancy and safety exceptions still apply. Waymo documents operator-controlled interior-camera uses and does not describe a rider camera-off switch. Exterior cameras are part of each vehicle’s driving or safety system and are not rider-disable features.
Can I stop a robotaxi from tracking my location?
You can reduce phone-based tracking by choosing a less permissive location setting and, for Tesla pickup, entering the location manually. You cannot remove the location needed to dispatch, route and complete the ride. Pickup, destination, route and vehicle-location records remain part of operating the service.

How do I opt out of Tesla Robotaxi data sharing?
In the Robotaxi app, turn off Cabin Camera Analytics and Sound Detection Analytics. Also review phone location permissions, Tesla Account privacy controls and the privacy-request process. These choices limit optional analytics and account sharing; they do not prevent safety, occupancy, support or legally required processing.
When a privacy setting appears not to work
The app will not dispatch without location
Temporarily grant the least-permissive location access that allows pickup, or use Tesla’s manual pickup entry. Verify the pickup pin yourself and restore the stricter permission after the vehicle arrives. If dispatch still fails, contact support rather than repeatedly toggling permissions while standing in an unsafe location.
A Tesla indicator stays on
Check whether a support session, occupancy check or safety event is active. End a support interaction if you initiated it, wait for the event to clear and record the time. If the green camera or orange microphone indicator remains without an apparent trigger, report the trip through the app and request an explanation.

Waymo support asks to view the interior
In an emergency or incident investigation, live or recorded video may be needed. Ask the support representative to explain the purpose and scope, then provide only the information needed to resolve the problem. For a formal record, use the privacy-rights process after the ride.
You want a record removed
Submit a provider privacy request with enough trip detail to locate the record. Deletion can be limited by local law, safety obligations, fraud prevention, dispute handling or other required retention. Request access or a copy first if you need to know exactly what should be corrected or deleted.
Choosing a sensible privacy posture
For the smallest practical data footprint, use manual pickup entry where Tesla supports it, grant only foreground or one-time phone location access, leave both Tesla analytics options off, and keep Waymo’s interior microphone disabled. Accept that dispatch, route and vehicle-location data are operationally necessary and that support or safety events can override ordinary sensor defaults.
For the strongest support and emergency response, allow the permissions and sensor access needed to identify you, recover a lost item or investigate an incident. The trade-off is additional account-associated location, video or audio around that event. The right choice is the one you make deliberately, with the provider’s indicators and account controls available when you need them.
