Robot vacuum tests typically measure debris pickup on hard floors and carpet, navigation and obstacle handling, and—in some reviews—mopping, app usability, maintenance, and battery life. There is no single industry-wide protocol in the methods described by the reviewers below, so a score is meaningful only alongside the test conditions and scoring priorities behind it.
How reviewers measure pickup
A pickup score depends on what the robot is asked to collect, the surface it crosses, and how the result is measured. Reviewers use different debris and setups, so their results are not direct equivalents.

Fixed debris tests on hard floors and carpet
Tom’s Guide describes testing 20 grams each of Cheerios, kitty litter, and pet hair. It scatters each type separately on hardwood, runs the robot, and weighs the debris collected; it repeats the tests on low-pile carpet. The collected amount is converted into a cleaning-performance percentage. The figures and procedure are from its 2026 buying guide page, accessed October 8, 2026.

Consumer NZ uses vinyl flooring and runs the robot for up to 25 minutes or until its cleaning cycle ends. CHOICE also allows up to 25 minutes or the end of the cycle, and adds furniture-like objects to make the test area more like a home. Those timings belong to the respective publishers’ methods, not to a common standard.

Embedded dirt, crevices, and suction measurements
Vacuum Wars separates several kinds of cleaning performance. For deep-carpet cleaning, it embeds sand in medium-pile carpet, runs the robot for a fixed time, and weighs the dustbin before and after; it typically repeats this test three times. For hard-floor crevices, it embeds coffee in grooves 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch deep and scores how many the robot clears. It also uses other debris-pickup tests to reveal weaknesses with particular particle sizes or fine debris.
Vacuum Wars additionally measures airflow and suction at maximum power with an anemometer and manometer. Its suction reading is taken at the brushhead housing, not at the motor. These equipment readings describe a different aspect of performance than weighing debris collected from a test surface.
Pet hair and edges
Hair tests can differ in both setup and scoring. CHOICE reports a six-minute test with cat hair embedded in carpet, assessed by how much hair remains. Tom’s Guide instead includes a measured amount of pet hair in its separate hardwood and low-pile-carpet pickup tests. Consumer NZ and CHOICE also describe corner or edge assessments, but those procedures should not be assumed to be identical.

Pickup tests say little about whether a robot can cover a room efficiently or avoid getting stuck. Reviewers assess those abilities separately, using setups that range from a home environment to a repeatable floor plan and obstacle course.
Testing in a home and on a fixed floor plan
Tom’s Guide follows controlled debris tests with real-world use in a tester’s home. It observes navigation, obstacle avoidance, and coverage over weeks of testing. That approach captures behavior in a lived-in environment, while also making the setting different from a tightly controlled test patch.
Vacuum Wars uses the same floor plan, furniture, and square footage for each robot. It measures cleaning speed, battery efficiency, and coverage at low, typical, and maximum settings. Its final navigation score averages navigation efficiency, battery efficiency, and coverage.

Obstacle courses and thresholds
Vacuum Wars tests robots with obstacle sensors in a series of courses: four tests containing three object categories each, followed by a combined “torture test” involving 24 objects. Its methodology page, last updated November 4, 2025, also describes a single-threshold climb test that starts at 19 mm and increases in quarter-inch increments, or about 6 mm.

What mopping tests reveal
Mopping methods vary in the stains used, the settings selected, and whether the test looks at water left behind or carpet avoidance. A robot’s result in one setup does not establish how it will handle every spill or floor type.
Stain removal and mop upkeep
Consumer NZ spreads coffee, red wine, a mud mixture, soy sauce, and jam on laminate. It assesses stain removal using the robot’s most intense routine and also evaluates handling the water tank and mop pads, including washing the pads.
CHOICE uses the same named stain categories with the best available cleaning and water-flow settings. It checks whether the robot avoids carpet during mopping; soil spread onto carpet can reduce the mopping score. Its method therefore includes both stain performance and a potential floor-protection failure.
Passes, stain difficulty, and water left behind
Vacuum Wars uses nine circular coffee stains and five grape-juice stains, varying their amounts with a syringe and assigning points by difficulty. It runs four passes, gives greater credit for stains removed earlier, repeats at maximum and low or medium power, and averages the two scores. Separately, it measures water left behind by weighing a paper towel before and after wiping a 4-by-4-foot area.

How usability and ownership experience affect results
Some reviewers treat setup and upkeep as part of the product’s performance, rather than limiting evaluation to cleaning. This matters because a robot that cleans well but is difficult to configure, empty, or maintain may be less convenient in regular use.
CHOICE assesses dirt-receptacle emptying, app clarity and lag, network connection, map creation and saving, scheduling, settings changes, and cleaning logs. Those logs report paths, obstacles, time, and battery use. Its published overall-score weighting assigns 30% to ease of use, including official apps; the remaining weights are 20% hard-floor pickup, 15% carpet pickup, 10% corners and edges, 10% pet hair, and 15% mopping. CHOICE’s page was accessed October 8, 2026; its publication date was not visible in the page content reviewed.
Consumer NZ runs each robot from fully charged until the motor stops and records runtime. Its mopping assessment also includes setup and pad washing, linking test performance to routine ownership tasks.
Vacuum Wars says its ranking algorithm also incorporates features, Amazon ratings, and price. That means its ranking reflects more than the bench and practical test results alone. Vacuum Wars describes its purchasing and review policy this way: “The first and most important thing to know about Vacuum Wars testing is that we purchase all the robot vacuums we test ourselves and never do sponsored reviews of any kind.” This is Vacuum Wars’ statement about its own reviews, from its methodology page last updated November 4, 2025; it should not be generalized to other reviewers.
RTINGS’ general vacuum methodology offers context but is not robot-specific. Its page says review units are bought through ordinary retail channels, tests are designed for comparable results, and a second tester peer-reviews data before writing. Its listed measures include maintenance, recurring costs, battery, pickup, suction, airflow, noise, stains, and water. These points describe its general vacuum testing, not a robot-vacuum protocol.
Why different reviewers can reach different conclusions
Two scores can diverge without either reviewer necessarily being wrong. They may have tested different messes, used different floor surfaces or room layouts, measured different outcomes, or assigned different importance to usability and other features.
- Debris and surface: Sand, cereal, litter, coffee, and hair challenge different parts of a cleaning system. Carpet pile, hard-floor type, and embedded dirt also change the task.
- Measurement: Weighing collected debris, calculating a pickup percentage, judging remaining hair, timing a run, and using airflow or suction instruments produce different kinds of evidence.
- Environment: A controlled patch or repeated floor plan helps standardize comparisons; a lived-in home can show how a robot behaves amid real rooms and obstacles.
- Navigation: Coverage, speed, battery use, object avoidance, threshold climbing, and tasselled-rug handling are distinct outcomes, and a publisher may test only some of them.
- Mopping: Stain types, soil amounts, pass count, water left behind, carpet avoidance, and pad or tank handling can all change what a mopping score represents.
- Scoring: Category weights determine how much pickup, edge cleaning, pet hair, mopping, or ease of use affects an overall result. Features, price, or retailer ratings may also enter a ranking.
Use the method page alongside a score: it tells you whether the test resembles the floors, debris, obstacles, and ownership tasks that matter in your home. Treat a publisher’s overall score as that publisher’s evaluation, not as a standardized industry grade.
