Robot Mower GPS vs. RTK vs. Boundary Wire: What’s the Difference?

Boundary wire, ordinary GPS and RTK solve different problems. A wire creates a physical perimeter that a compatible mower can detect. GPS may help some mowers estimate coverage or map areas, but ordinary GPS is not precise enough to act as a dependable virtual lawn edge. RTK combines satellite positioning with correction data, allowing supported mowers to follow software-defined boundaries with centimetre-level accuracy. Your choice depends on the mower model, tree and building cover, internet availability, yard layout and whether you prefer installing cable or mapping the lawn in an app.

Robot mower GPS vs RTK: the short answer

GPS is the underlying satellite-positioning method. It estimates a receiver’s location, usually with accuracy measured in metres. RTK (real-time kinematic) is a correction technique that uses satellite signals plus data from a correction source, improving the position estimate to centimetres under suitable conditions.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters because a mower advertising “GPS navigation” may still need a boundary wire. Husqvarna says standard GPS is accurate only to a few metres, while correction data used by its EPOS system reduces potential error to a few centimetres. In other words, GPS assistance and RTK virtual-boundary control are not interchangeable labels.

A boundary wire remains the most direct way to define an edge: the cable is laid or buried around the mowing area and the mower detects its signal. An RTK mower can instead store virtual boundaries, but only when the exact model supports that function and receives usable satellite and correction signals.

What each system actually defines

System What defines the mowing area? Published Husqvarna positioning figures Main dependencies
Boundary wire A physical perimeter wire installed around the lawn and any exclusion zones. Not directly comparable with satellite-accuracy figures. Correct installation, intact cable and compatible mower electronics.
GPS-assisted coverage GPS can help estimate which areas have been covered or support mapping; the mower may still use its specified physical boundary system. Older X-line GPS-assisted navigation: 3–5 m. AIM zones: approximately 1 m. Model-specific software, satellite reception and the mower’s required boundary method.
RTK virtual boundary A software-drawn perimeter stored by a compatible mower and app. Cloud correction: typically better than 5 cm. Local reference station: typically better than 2 cm. RTK-capable model, clear sky view and delivery of correction data.

These figures are vendor specifications for documented Husqvarna systems, not a universal ranking of every robotic mower. Accuracy varies by model, market, correction service and local conditions.

How boundary wire works

The physical perimeter

A boundary-wire installation creates an electromagnetic signal around the area the mower is allowed to enter. The wire can be placed on the lawn surface and secured with pegs, or buried according to the mower manufacturer’s depth and spacing instructions. The charging station and boundary ends connect to the mower’s installation system, which detects whether the machine is inside, outside or approaching the perimeter.

Separate wire loops can exclude flower beds, ponds, play equipment, trees or temporary areas. Narrow passages and multiple lawn sections may require guide wires or a particular connection layout, so the mower’s installation manual takes precedence over generic diagrams.

Advantages

  • It does not depend on an internet connection or satellite visibility during mowing.
  • The edge is physically defined, so dense tree cover and nearby buildings do not create a positioning ambiguity.
  • It works with many established robotic-mower designs and can be repaired with compatible connectors if a break occurs.

Trade-offs and failure modes

  • Installation takes time, and changing the lawn layout means moving the cable.
  • A cut, corroded joint or loose terminal can stop the mower or cause perimeter errors; locating the break is the usual repair task.
  • The wire is not a universal accessory. Gauge, connector type, maximum loop length and burial method must match the mower.

What ordinary GPS does on a robot mower

Satellite positioning can tell a mower approximately where it is and can help software distribute mowing passes. Husqvarna describes GPS-assisted navigation on older X-line models as having 3–5-metre precision, useful for determining which sections need mowing. That scale is too coarse to guarantee that a machine will remain inside a narrow property edge, beside a pond or along a neighbour’s fence without another boundary method.

Some systems use map-based features with finer zone estimates. Husqvarna’s AIM guidance cites approximately 1-metre zone accuracy, but that should not be read as a universal GPS boundary specification. The exact mower may still require a boundary wire, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions determine whether a virtual perimeter is supported.

Why GPS drift matters at the edge

A few metres of position uncertainty can place the calculated mower location on the wrong side of a driveway or garden border. Trees, walls and other obstructions can reduce the number or quality of visible satellite signals. Even when the map looks correct in an app, ordinary GPS alone does not provide the centimetre-level control expected from a true wire-free perimeter.

How RTK creates a virtual boundary

Satellite signals plus a reference

RTK GNSS uses satellite observations at the mower and at a correction source. The reference source compares its known or estimated position with the satellite solution, then sends correction data to the mower. The mower applies those corrections to produce a much tighter position estimate than standalone GPS can provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Husqvarna describes its EPOS system as RTK GNSS positioning with either cloud-delivered corrections or a local reference station, depending on the model and market. Once the mower has a reliable position, you map the lawn perimeter, stay-out areas and work zones in the companion app instead of laying a boundary cable.

Cloud correction

For homeowner EPOS guidance, Husqvarna reports cloud positioning typically better than 5 cm. Cloud operation requires an internet path across the mower’s working area, using the connectivity supported by that model, such as Wi-Fi or mobile data. If correction data is interrupted, the mower may pause and resume after the signal improves.

Local reference station

Husqvarna reports local reference-station positioning typically better than 2 cm. The station sends correction data locally, so navigation does not require internet access. It still needs power, a suitable installation position and adequate satellite reception for both the station and mower.

Husqvarna’s US EPOS FAQ specifies an open 135-degree view of the sky for the reference station. If you move the station after mapping, the virtual map must be recreated. The charging station also needs a clear enough sky view for the mower to acquire and maintain its position, with exact placement determined by the model instructions.

Do robot mowers need boundary wire?

Not always. A conventional mower designed around a wire does need one. A supported RTK mower can operate without a perimeter cable when its virtual-boundary system, correction link and satellite view meet the manufacturer’s requirements. A mower that merely includes GPS-assisted coverage does not automatically qualify as wire-free.

Check the exact model documentation for three separate statements:

  • Whether the model supports virtual boundaries at all.
  • Whether it uses cloud corrections, a local reference station or both.
  • Whether a physical wire is required, optional or unavailable as a fallback.

Can a robot mower work without boundary wire?

Yes, when it is designed for a wire-free system such as an RTK implementation. The normal workflow is to install the charging station and correction equipment, connect the mower and app, drive or guide the mower around the lawn to record the perimeter, then save virtual boundaries and exclusion zones.

“Wire-free” does not mean “signal-free.” The mower still needs satellite visibility and a functioning correction path. A building-lined courtyard, narrow passage under dense trees or a location with unreliable internet may cause pauses or boundary loss. Some supported models allow Support by wire: a physical wire can be added in weak-signal locations such as narrow passages or dense tree cover. Husqvarna states that this option is model-specific, not universal.

Is RTK better than GPS for a robot mower?

For precise virtual boundaries, RTK is better because it improves the position estimate with correction data. Husqvarna’s published homeowner figures—typically better than 5 cm with cloud correction and better than 2 cm with a local station—are substantially tighter than the 3–5-metre precision cited for older GPS-assisted navigation.

RTK is not automatically the better installation for every yard. It introduces requirements that a wire does not:

  • A compatible RTK mower and, where required, a reference station.
  • Clear sky views at the mower’s charging area and reference station.
  • Stable internet for cloud correction, or suitable power and placement for a local station.
  • Accurate initial mapping and occasional troubleshooting when correction data is lost.

Choose RTK when adjustable virtual zones and avoiding perimeter cable are priorities and the property has adequate sky visibility. Choose wire when the yard blocks satellites, internet is unreliable, or you want a physical perimeter that remains independent of correction services.

Installation decision guide

Choose boundary wire when

  • Large trees, tall buildings or covered passages obstruct the sky over important mowing areas.
  • You want the mower to remain operational without internet or satellite corrections.
  • Your existing mower is wire-based or does not explicitly support virtual boundaries.
  • The lawn’s shape is stable enough that installing cable once is worthwhile.

Choose RTK virtual boundaries when

  • The exact mower model supports RTK and virtual mapping in your market.
  • You want to alter zones in software rather than move buried cable.
  • The charging station and, if used, reference station can see a broad portion of the sky.
  • Cloud connectivity is reliable, or a local station can be installed with power.

Use a hybrid approach when supported

A hybrid setup uses RTK for most of the lawn and boundary wire in known weak-signal areas. Husqvarna documents this as Support by wire on some models. Confirm compatibility before buying cable or changing the map; a wire fallback cannot be assumed on every RTK mower.

Step-by-step: setting up an RTK mower

  1. Confirm compatibility. Verify that the mower, app, correction service and reference-station option are supported in your country and for that model year.
  2. Survey the sky view. Inspect the charging location and proposed reference-station location for roofs, walls and dense canopy. For Husqvarna EPOS reference stations, the published requirement is an open 135-degree sky view.
  3. Install the charging station. Follow the model’s clearance, power and orientation instructions. Poor placement can prevent reliable initial positioning.
  4. Choose corrections. Select cloud correction if the mower has dependable internet coverage, or install a local reference station when navigation should not depend on internet access.
  5. Power and pair the equipment. Complete the app’s mower, station and correction-service pairing process, then wait for a stable positioning indication before mapping.
  6. Map the perimeter. Use the app or the mower’s guided mapping procedure to trace the actual cutting edge. Record exclusion zones around beds, ponds, play areas and obstacles.
  7. Test narrow and shaded sections. Run a supervised cycle through passages and tree-covered areas. Watch for correction-loss pauses or position warnings before leaving the mower unattended.
  8. Do not move the reference station casually. Husqvarna states that moving it after mapping requires recreating the virtual map.

Step-by-step: installing and checking boundary wire

  1. Draw the installation plan. Mark the outer perimeter, islands and guide-wire route using the mower manual’s required clearances from walls, drops and paving.
  2. Install the cable. Secure it on the surface with the specified pegs or bury it to the documented depth. Avoid sharp kinks and protect joins from moisture.
  3. Connect the loop. Attach both ends to the charging-station terminals or boundary module exactly as shown for the mower.
  4. Verify the signal. Use the mower’s indicator light or installation test to confirm a closed, correctly oriented loop.
  5. Run a supervised edge test. Let the mower approach corners, guide-wire junctions and exclusion islands. Correct spacing before the cable is buried permanently.
  6. Repair faults methodically. If the mower reports a broken loop, inspect recent digging, edging and animal damage first, then test sections with the manufacturer-approved break-finding method and replace damaged connectors with compatible parts.

Connectivity and obstruction troubleshooting

The mower pauses and later resumes

On cloud-corrected systems, this usually indicates that correction data was temporarily unavailable. Check internet coverage where the mower works, not just beside the home router. Confirm that the correction service is active, restart connectivity equipment if the model permits it, and observe whether the mower resumes when the signal returns.

Position warnings appear under trees or beside buildings

Move the charging station only after checking the model’s placement rules, and do not relocate a mapped reference station without planning to recreate the map. If the model supports Support by wire, use a physical boundary through the weak-signal section. Otherwise, redesign the mapped route or improve the station’s sky view.

The mower crosses or ignores a boundary

For a wire system, stop operation and check loop connections, cable damage and the mower’s boundary-signal test. For RTK, verify that the virtual map was recorded with the station in its current location, that correction status is healthy and that the mower has completed its positioning startup. Never assume a GPS coverage map is equivalent to a perimeter map.

Accuracy figures and what they do—and do not—mean

Accuracy is a positioning estimate, not a promise that the cutting blade will run exactly that distance from every object. Blade offset, wheel slip, slope, map-recording technique and temporary signal reflections affect the practical edge. Vendor figures also describe different systems and contexts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Documented context Published figure How to interpret it
Older Husqvarna X-line GPS-assisted navigation 3–5 m precision Coverage assistance; not evidence of a precise virtual perimeter.
Husqvarna AIM zones Approximately 1 m A zone-estimation figure for that feature, not a universal GPS boundary claim.
Husqvarna homeowner EPOS cloud correction Typically better than 5 cm Vendor-reported RTK positioning under suitable correction and reception conditions.
Husqvarna homeowner EPOS local reference station Typically better than 2 cm Vendor-reported local RTK positioning; internet is not required for navigation.
Husqvarna UK commercial examples RS 4G: typically 1–2 cm within 10 km; Cloud: 1–6 cm; RS5: 1–2 cm Separate commercial products and contexts; do not combine these into one consumer specification.

All figures above come from Husqvarna documentation and are system-specific. No independent comparative study establishes that every RTK mower will outperform every wire installation in every yard.

Buying and ownership checklist

  • Write down the exact mower model, market and model year before comparing GPS, RTK or wire claims.
  • Confirm whether “GPS” means coverage assistance, map zones or a true virtual-boundary feature.
  • Measure sky visibility at the charging station and at any proposed reference-station location.
  • Identify whether the correction path is cloud-based, local or selectable.
  • Check ongoing connectivity requirements and what the mower does when correction data is lost.
  • Ask whether Support by wire is available if parts of the yard have weak satellite reception.
  • Plan service access: wire systems need break repair; RTK systems need station power, positioning and map maintenance.
  • Verify accessory and installation compatibility before purchasing wire, connectors or a reference station.

Bottom line for different yards

A simple, open lawn with reliable connectivity and a compatible mower is a strong RTK candidate: virtual boundaries are adjustable and Husqvarna’s documented systems target centimetre-level positioning. A shaded, enclosed or offline property is usually more predictable with a properly installed boundary wire. Ordinary GPS can improve coverage decisions, but it should not be treated as RTK and should not be assumed to replace a physical perimeter.
