The right robot lawn mower is determined by the lawn it must cut—not the total size of your property. Measure the mowable grass, identify the steepest sections and boundary edges, then check whether a specific model’s capacity, slope rating, navigation system and installation requirements fit those conditions. A mower rated for a large, open lawn may be a poor choice for a smaller yard divided by narrow passages, trees or satellite-blocking walls.
Start with a survey of the lawn the mower will actually cut
Before comparing models, make a simple map of every grass area you expect the robot to maintain. Exclude the house, driveway, patio, planting beds, ponds and any other surface the mower will not enter. Capacity ratings apply to mowable grass, not the entire plot shown on a property survey.

Measure the mowable area
- Sketch the property or use a mapping app to outline each grass section.
- Subtract buildings, hardscape, beds and permanent exclusions.
- Add the remaining grass areas to obtain the total mowable area.
- Record each separate zone rather than recording only the combined total.
Dreame’s 2026 buying guidance likewise recommends measuring the actual mowing area and mapping zones. Keep the result in the same unit used by the product page—square metres, square feet or acres—and leave headroom rather than choosing a model whose published maximum exactly equals your measurement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRecord the shape and obstacles
Note narrow passages, isolated lawns, trees, play equipment, garden furniture, retaining walls, drainage channels and places where the mower must cross from one zone to another. A 400-square-metre lawn divided into three connected rectangles can be more demanding than one uninterrupted 600-square-metre rectangle. Count zones and check the model’s supported zone limit; STIGA states that the number of mowing zones varies by model.

Measure the steepest grades
Measure slopes in the main work area and close to every boundary, ramp and transition. Husqvarna defines percentage slope as:
slope (%) = vertical height ÷ horizontal distance × 100
For example, a 15-centimetre rise over 100 centimetres of horizontal distance is a 15% slope. Percentage grade is not the same as degrees; do not compare a manufacturer’s percentage limit with a degree measurement as though they were interchangeable. If you have a degree reading, convert it consistently or measure rise and horizontal run directly.
Match the mower’s capacity to your measured area
Manufacturers publish capacity figures for particular models and operating assumptions. Treat them as specifications, not independent comparative tests. A rating can depend on the mower’s schedule, charging time, lawn shape and navigation mode.
| What to compare | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Mowable area | Determines whether the mower can cover your grass within its operating schedule. | Use the measured grass area, excluding non-mowing surfaces. |
| Operating mode | Some models publish different capacities for irregular and systematic mowing. | Check which mode matches your layout and expected pattern. |
| Separate zones | Several lawns may require more routing and setup than one open area. | Confirm the model’s supported zone count and transfer method. |
| Shape and passages | Narrow links and obstacles can reduce practical coverage. | Check minimum passage guidance in the manual and map obstructions. |
Understand mode-specific capacity claims
Husqvarna’s US product information for the Automower 410 iQ lists a 0.25-acre capacity for irregular mowing and 0.5 acre for systematic mowing. Those are mode-specific figures for that model, not a universal acreage rule. If your lawn is irregular, use the irregular figure when deciding whether the mower has sufficient capacity; do not select it on the larger systematic number unless you will actually use that mode and your layout supports it.
Husqvarna’s US buying guide lists area and slope by individual model. Compare the exact regional model number, because features, ratings and availability can differ between markets. A local product page and the current manual should take precedence over a generic retailer description.
Leave capacity margin
Capacity is not a promise that every blade of grass will be cut on an oversized or fragmented property. Allow room for charging cycles, excluded pockets, travel between zones and seasonal changes in growth. If your measured area is close to the published maximum, a higher-capacity model or a different mowing mode may be the safer choice.
Evaluate slopes in two places: the work area and the boundary
A mower can have one limit while it is cutting and a lower limit when it approaches an edge. Check both figures in the model’s specification.
Work-area and boundary ratings are different
| Specification | Meaning | Husqvarna examples |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum slope in the work area | The steepest grade the mower is rated to cut within its mowing area. | Across listed Automower models, 25% to 70%, depending on model. |
| Maximum slope at the boundary | The steepest grade permitted where the mower follows or approaches the edge. | Across listed models, 10% to 50%, depending on model. |
| 435X AWD/435X AWD NERA | Model-specific limits cited by Husqvarna support. | 70% in the work area; 50% at the boundary. |
The 25%–70% work-area and 10%–50% boundary ranges are manufacturer figures across listed models, not an industry-wide standard. The 435X AWD and 435X AWD NERA values are examples for those specific models. Confirm the exact limit for the mower sold in your country.

Keep steep sections inside the rating
Husqvarna’s installation guidance says slopes in the work area and near boundaries must not exceed the limits specified for the mower. If a section is steeper, exclude it rather than relying on traction or software to compensate. On an AWD model, the same support material describes additional clearance and obstacle conditions for the steepest grades; read those conditions with the model’s manual.
Plan edges and turns on hills
Turning around an obstacle on a steep slope increases the risk of slipping and can increase wear, particularly in wet conditions. Husqvarna recommends placing the boundary farther into flat ground when the lawn edge is steeper than the mower’s boundary limit. That creates a deliberate no-go strip instead of asking the mower to turn on an unsafe edge.

These are Husqvarna recommendations for its systems, not universal construction rules; follow the instructions for your model.
Choose between physical wire and virtual boundaries
Both approaches keep the mower inside a mapped area, but they impose different installation and site requirements.
| Consideration | Physical boundary wire | Virtual boundary or cable-free mapping |
|---|---|---|
| How the boundary is created | A perimeter wire is installed around the mowing area and exclusions. | The perimeter and no-go areas are mapped in an app using positioning hardware. |
| Best fit | Stable layouts or sites with limited satellite or internet coverage, according to Husqvarna. | Gardens where boundaries change and app-based editing is useful. |
| Site dependency | Requires physical installation, joins and protected wire routes. | Requires reliable positioning conditions and correct reference-station placement. |
| Changing the garden | Moving a bed or path may require repositioning wire. | Mapped lines can generally be edited in the app, subject to signal quality. |
When wire is the safer choice
Husqvarna describes wired installation as useful where the garden layout is stable or satellite and internet coverage is limited. Wire also avoids depending on a clear satellite view through every passage. Installation takes more physical work, but the boundary remains predictable after it is secured and tested.
When virtual mapping can simplify changes
Virtual systems can make it easier to redraw a bed, add a temporary exclusion or divide zones without moving cable. They are not signal-free systems. Husqvarna says its virtual-boundary positioning is typically within 5 centimetres, while warning that walls or tall hedges around passages narrower than 4 metres can block satellite signals on virtual installations. Treat that 5-centimetre figure as the manufacturer’s typical statement, not an independent measurement.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the reference-station view
STIGA’s cable-free setup uses a docking station and satellite reference antenna, followed by perimeter and obstacle mapping in its app. Its UK FAQ says the reference station needs a clear view of the sky with at least 120° of open space above it for a stable satellite connection. This is STIGA-specific guidance. A location under dense branches, beside a tall wall or inside a narrow courtyard may not meet it.
Inspect signal conditions before buying a wire-free model
Walk the proposed route and look upward, not just at the lawn surface. Mark sections bordered by masonry, tall hedges, dense tree canopies, covered side passages or other structures that could interrupt positioning. A broad lawn with one signal-shadowed corridor can be a poor candidate for virtual boundaries even when its total area is well within the mower’s capacity.
- Identify passages narrower than 4 metres between walls or tall hedges.
- Check whether the proposed reference-station position has the required open sky.
- Look for tree canopies that cover a boundary or docking approach.
- Confirm that the dock can remain in a location with dependable positioning and power.
- Ask the manufacturer or authorized installer how signal loss is handled in your model.
If any section repeatedly loses positioning during setup, a physical-wire model or a different dock/reference-station location may be more dependable than trying to redraw the map around the problem.

Account for zones, passages and obstacles
Separate mowing zones
List every grass area that is not continuously connected to the main lawn. Some robots can manage multiple zones from one installation; others require manual relocation or have a stated zone limit. STIGA notes that supported mowing-zone counts vary by model. Verify whether the mower can travel between zones, whether a guide route is required, and how the app schedules each zone.
Narrow passages
Measure the usable width between fences, walls and hedges, not the distance between property lines. A passage can be wide enough for the mower physically but still unsuitable for virtual positioning. Check the manual’s passage and turning guidance, and make sure the mower can reach the dock after leaving a zone.
Fixed obstacles and exclusions
Map trees, play equipment, ponds, gravel, vegetable beds and temporary features that will remain in place. For wire installations, plan protected wire routes around them. For virtual systems, create app exclusions and then verify them at walking speed before allowing an automated schedule.
Plan the installation, not just the purchase
Installation quality determines whether the mower can follow the boundary, find its dock and handle transitions safely.
- Choose the dock location. Select level ground with power access and the signal clearance required by the navigation system.
- Mark exclusions. Identify beds, water, drop-offs, steep edges and any surface the mower must never enter.
- Set the perimeter. Install and secure physical wire, or map the virtual boundary and no-go zones in the app.
- Provide routes between zones. Follow the model’s guide-wire or mapped-route instructions, especially through narrow links.
- Test before scheduling. Run the mower around every boundary, passage and slope in daylight and correct crossings before unattended operation.
- Document the layout. Keep a map and photographs of buried wire, connectors and exclusions for future landscaping.
For a complicated yard, an authorized local dealer or installer can reduce setup risk. Confirm the provider’s availability, the exact model they support and what the installation service includes; service coverage differs by location.

Compare cutting and control features after the site fit
Once capacity, slopes and navigation have passed your survey, compare the details that affect daily use:
- Cutting-height range: Match the adjustment range to the grass species and the height you maintain. The exact range is model-specific.
- Pattern options: Some models offer systematic patterns as well as irregular mowing. Check which modes are available and how they affect the published capacity.
- Scheduling controls: Confirm how zones, calendars and weather pauses are configured in the current app and firmware.
- Obstacle handling: Read the model’s instructions for slopes, turning and clearance around fixed objects.
- Blade replacement: Use only blades listed for the exact model and regional version. Husqvarna publishes model-specific replacement blades.
- Traction accessories: Husqvarna’s UK FAQ identifies a terrain kit with heavy rear wheels and wheel brushes for most models, but availability and compatibility must be checked for your mower and market.
Do not treat a longer feature list as a substitute for a suitable boundary and slope installation. A mower with fewer app options but dependable coverage can be the better fit for a signal-obstructed garden.
Use this decision sequence before ordering
- Area: Is the measured mowable grass comfortably below the model’s capacity in the mode you will use?
- Grade: Is every work-area slope below the model’s work-area limit, and is every edge below its lower boundary limit?
- Navigation: Does the site support physical wire or the satellite conditions required for virtual mapping?
- Zones: Can the mower support your number of zones and the way you need to move between them?
- Passages: Are all links wide and clear enough for the mower and, on virtual systems, for reliable positioning?
- Installation: Can you place the dock, route wire or reference antenna, and create safe exclusions?
- Support: Are local service, compatible blades and any terrain accessories available for the exact regional model?
If any answer is uncertain, resolve that item with the current manual or local product support before buying. Manufacturer ratings, accessories, warranty terms and availability can change by model and market.

Correction: Recalculate only the grass the robot will cut, then compare that figure with the model’s mode-specific rating.
Checking only the headline slope number
Symptom: The mower handles the middle of a hill but crosses or slips at the edge.
Correction: Measure boundary grades separately. Use the lower boundary limit and move the edge into flatter ground where required.
Assuming virtual boundaries work everywhere
Symptom: Positioning drifts in a walled side passage or beneath trees.

Correction: Inspect satellite visibility, reference-station placement and narrow passages before purchase. Consider physical wire where signal conditions are unreliable.
Ignoring wet-slope turning
Symptom: Wheel slip or extra wear appears when the mower turns around an obstacle on a steep grade.
Correction: Remove or relocate the obstacle, create an exclusion or redesign the boundary so turns occur on flatter ground. Husqvarna specifically warns that wet conditions increase this risk.
Assuming every accessory fits every model
Symptom: A terrain kit or replacement blade is unavailable or incompatible.

The Bottom Line
Choose a robot mower only after measuring the grass it will cut, the steepest work-area and boundary slopes, and the real signal or wire conditions around every zone. Capacity, navigation and traction ratings are model-specific; the best mower is the one whose documented limits leave room for your yard’s shape and installation—not the one with the largest headline acreage.
