File Explorer is the easier choice for a graphical, one-off copy or a straightforward local transfer. Microsoft does not publish a universal benchmark proving that Robocopy is always faster; the clearest performance distinction applies to many small files over a network.
The right choice depends on file-size distribution, destination type, connection reliability, metadata requirements, repeatability and the consequences of an incorrect command. The guide below shows where each tool fits, how to configure Robocopy safely and how to avoid turning a copy into an unintended deletion operation.

Robocopy and File Explorer solve different copying problems
File Explorer is Windows’ graphical file manager. You select files or folders, choose Copy, open the destination and choose Paste. It requires no command syntax and is easy to understand when the job is small, local or performed only once.
Robocopy, short for Robust File Copy, is a Windows command-line utility designed for repeatable and configurable transfers. Its options can copy directory trees, preserve selected metadata, write logs, use multiple concurrent file-copy threads and resume interrupted transfers. The Microsoft Robocopy reference defines the behavior of those switches.

Neither program is automatically superior for every batch. A batch of a few very large files on a fast local SSD is a different workload from hundreds of thousands of small documents on an SMB share. Storage latency, network capacity, antivirus inspection, CPU availability and the source and destination file systems can all change the result.
Where the performance difference is most relevant
Many small files over an SMB network
This is the strongest evidence-backed case for Robocopy. Microsoft says that slow copy speeds and low network throughput are expected when a large number of small files are transferred over a network with File Explorer and other single-threaded copy tools. In some such scenarios, throughput can fall below 1 MB/s; that figure is a scenario-specific warning, not a prediction for every Explorer copy.
Robocopy can issue multiple file transfers in parallel with the /MT option. That allows it to keep more network and storage operations in flight when each file is too small to saturate the link by itself. Microsoft discusses this SMB behavior in its slow SMB file-transfer guidance and its SMB file-server performance guidance.
More threads are not automatically better. Microsoft documents a range of 1 through 128 threads and recommends testing because excessive concurrency can increase contention and reduce performance. The useful setting depends on the actual share, network, disks and file mix.
A few large files
Large files are a separate case. Robocopy’s /J switch uses unbuffered I/O and is documented as recommended for large files. That recommendation does not establish a guaranteed speed advantage over File Explorer. A small number of large files may already keep a local disk or network link busy with a simple copy, so the benefit of additional threads may be limited.

Use the file-size distribution, not the total number of gigabytes, to decide whether the small-file SMB guidance applies. A 500 GB folder containing ten video files behaves differently from a 500 GB folder containing millions of tiny records.
Local disks
For a local source and destination, File Explorer is often the most convenient option because there is no network session to recover and no command to save. Robocopy becomes more valuable when you need the same operation repeatedly, want a log, need precise metadata handling or are copying a deep directory tree.

The Microsoft material does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark for local drives, different hardware or different file mixes. Do not convert the SMB-specific warning into a claim that Robocopy is universally faster on local storage.
Mixed batches
Real folders often contain both small documents and large media files. In that situation, start with a modest /MT value, measure the complete job and adjust only if the source, destination and network remain the same. A setting that helps one workload can hurt another by competing for disk queues, CPU time or server resources.
Feature comparison
| Need | Robocopy | File Explorer |
|---|---|---|
| Graphical, low-friction operation | Requires Command Prompt or another shell and correctly written paths and switches. | Point-and-click selection, copy and paste; usually the easiest option for an occasional job. |
| Many small files over SMB | /MT can perform parallel file transfers; test the thread count on the real workload. |
Microsoft identifies Explorer and other single-threaded copy tools as potentially slow in this scenario. |
| Few large files | /J uses unbuffered I/O and is documented as recommended for large files; no universal speed guarantee is established. |
Simple to use, with no command configuration required. |
| Interrupted network copy | /Z enables restartable mode, but extra logging can reduce performance. |
Graphical workflow is convenient, but it does not expose Robocopy’s restartable-mode and logging controls. |
| Repeatability | Commands can be saved, reviewed and run again with the same source, destination and options. | Manual selection and paste are harder to reproduce exactly. |
| Logs | /LOG:path writes a log file; the documented example uses /LOG:C:LogsBackup.log. |
No equivalent Robocopy-style command log is part of the basic copy-and-paste workflow. |
| Metadata scope | /COPY:DAT explicitly selects data, attributes and timestamps in the documented example. |
Uses Explorer’s normal copy behavior rather than a command-line metadata selection. |
| Directory trees | /E copies subdirectories, including empty ones. |
Can copy folders recursively through the graphical interface. |
| Risk of destructive synchronization | /MIR mirrors the source and can delete destination items absent from the source. |
A normal copy does not implicitly mean “make the destination identical”; deletion risk is more visible as a separate user action. |
When to choose each tool
Choose Robocopy when these conditions matter
- The destination is an SMB share and the batch contains many small files.
- You need a repeatable command for scheduled, documented or recurring transfers.
- You need a log to verify what was attempted and what failed.
- You need to include empty directories or deliberately select data, attributes and timestamps.
- The connection may drop and resuming an interrupted file is more important than maximum throughput.
- You are comfortable validating source and destination paths before execution.
Choose File Explorer when these conditions matter
- You are making a one-off copy and want a graphical progress view.
- The transfer is local and uncomplicated.
- You do not need a saved command, detailed log or explicit metadata policy.
- Another person must perform the task without learning command-line syntax.
- The cost of a mistyped command is higher than the convenience of automation.
How to run a safe Robocopy batch
1. Verify the source and destination
Write down the complete source and destination paths. For a network target, confirm that the share is reachable and that your account can create files there. Be especially careful with drive letters, trailing folder names and redirected folders. A correct command aimed at the wrong destination can still produce a technically successful but unwanted copy.

2. Start with a conservative, explicit command
Microsoft documents this pattern for a recursive copy that includes empty directories, retains data, attributes and timestamps, uses 16 concurrent threads and writes a log:
robocopy C:UsersAdminRecords D:Backup /E /COPY:DAT /MT:16 /LOG:C:LogsBackup.log
In this example, C:UsersAdminRecords is the source, D:Backup is the destination, /E includes all subdirectories including empty ones, /COPY:DAT copies data, attributes and timestamps, /MT:16 requests 16 concurrent copies and /LOG:C:LogsBackup.log records the operation. The paths and thread count are examples, not universal optimum settings. The option definitions are in Microsoft’s Robocopy documentation.
3. Create the log location first
Make sure the directory used by /LOG exists and that you can write to it. A log on the same destination being copied can become unavailable if that destination disconnects, so for an important network job consider storing the log on a reliable local location. Keep the log with the job record if you need an audit trail.
4. Select a modest thread count
/MT accepts 1 through 128 threads and defaults to eight when no value is supplied. Start with a modest value such as the documented example’s 16, observe throughput and system load, then test a different value on the same workload. Stop increasing the count if the server, disks or network become saturated or the transfer slows. Microsoft specifically warns that too many threads can harm performance.
5. Add options only for a defined need
For a few very large files, consider /J for unbuffered I/O. For an unstable connection where resuming an interrupted file matters, consider /Z. Restartable mode has a cost: Microsoft’s Azure Files migration guidance warns that extra logging can reduce performance. Treat /Z as a resilience setting, not a speed switch.

Do not combine switches by habit. Check the documented interaction and destination semantics for every option, particularly when the destination is a cloud-backed or network file service. The Azure-specific cautions are described in Microsoft’s RoboCopy migration guidance for Azure Files.
6. Do not use /MIR for an ordinary copy
/MIR means mirror: the destination is made to match the source, and destination files or directories that are absent from the source can be deleted. That is useful for a deliberate synchronization workflow, but it is not a harmless replacement for “copy this folder.” A typo in the source path or an incomplete source can therefore remove data from the destination. Leave /MIR out of a plain backup or transfer unless deletion is explicitly intended and separately verified.
How to copy with File Explorer
- Open File Explorer and browse to the source folder.
- Select the files or folders. Use
Ctrl+Afor everything in the current folder, or select individual items withCtrlorShift. - Choose Copy from the context menu or press
Ctrl+C. Use Cut only when you intend to move the originals. - Open the destination drive, folder or network share in a second Explorer window.
- Choose Paste or press
Ctrl+V. - Read the conflict and error prompts. Do not choose a blanket overwrite or skip action unless it matches the job’s purpose.
- Wait for the progress dialog to finish, then open a sample of copied files and check the destination folder structure.
Explorer is a sensible choice when visual confirmation and low setup effort matter more than a repeatable command. For very large SMB batches of small files, however, the single-threaded behavior described by Microsoft can make the transfer take much longer than expected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Resuming, retries and network reliability
A network copy can fail because of a disconnected Wi-Fi link, a sleeping computer, a server restart, a transient share error or a permissions change. Robocopy’s /Z restartable mode records enough state to resume an interrupted file rather than treating the entire file as new. The benefit is most relevant when restarting would be expensive.
Recommended Free Tools
Restartable mode is not free. Microsoft warns that its extra logging can reduce performance, including in Azure Files migration scenarios. If the connection is stable and throughput is the priority, test the transfer without /Z; if interruption is likely, the recovery benefit may justify the overhead.
Best Value
For any failed item, inspect the log and the destination rather than assuming that a completed command means every file was usable. Retry a small affected subset after correcting the cause—such as reconnecting the share or fixing permissions—instead of repeatedly launching a broad command against an uncertain destination.
Metadata, scope and verification
Decide what “copied” means
A byte-for-byte data copy is not always the same as preserving file attributes and timestamps. The documented /COPY:DAT selection means data, attributes and timestamps. If your application depends on other metadata, confirm the appropriate Robocopy option in the reference before running the job; do not assume that a generic copy preserves every security or application-specific property.
Include or exclude empty directories deliberately
The documented /E option includes empty subdirectories. That is useful when the destination must retain the source tree’s structure, but unnecessary empty folders can make a destination harder to navigate. Decide whether the directory layout itself is part of the requirement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use logs as an operational record
A log gives you a durable record of the paths, options and outcomes associated with a run. Use a unique, writable path and retain it with the job’s notes when the transfer is important. A log does not replace checking the destination: open representative files, compare folder counts where appropriate and investigate any reported errors.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The SMB transfer is extremely slow and contains tiny files
- Confirm that the destination is an SMB share rather than a local disk.
- Try Robocopy with a modest
/MTvalue. - Measure the complete job rather than one unusually small sample.
- Check whether antivirus scanning, server disk latency or a congested network is limiting throughput.
- Increase or decrease the thread count only after testing; excessive concurrency can reduce performance.
The transfer slows after adding restartable mode
- Recognize that
/Zadds logging overhead. - Keep it when interruption recovery is the priority.
- If the link is stable, compare a controlled run without
/Zon the same files and destination.
The destination contains unexpected deletions
- Stop using the command and inspect whether
/MIRwas included. - Compare the exact source path with the intended source.
- Recover deleted destination data from your established backup or recovery process.
- For ordinary copies, remove
/MIRand use an explicit non-mirroring command.
The command reports errors
- Read the log for the exact path and error condition.
- Check permissions on both source and destination.
- Confirm that the share is still connected and that the destination has sufficient free space.
- Resolve the underlying problem, then rerun only the affected scope when practical.
A practical decision framework
| Your situation | Preferred starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One local folder copied once to another local folder | File Explorer | Minimal setup and an easy graphical workflow. |
| Thousands of small files to an SMB share | Robocopy with tested /MT |
Parallel file transfers address the workload Microsoft identifies as problematic for single-threaded tools. |
| A few very large files | Either; test Robocopy with /J if appropriate |
Large-file behavior is distinct, and no universal Explorer-versus-Robocopy speed advantage is established. |
| Recurring or scheduled transfer | Robocopy | A saved command, explicit options and a log make the process repeatable. |
| Unstable network where restarting is costly | Robocopy with carefully tested /Z |
Restartable mode can resume interrupted files, with a documented performance trade-off. |
| Destination must exactly mirror source and deletions are intended | Robocopy with deliberate review of /MIR |
Mirroring can remove destination items absent from the source, so path validation is mandatory. |
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Microsoft’s documentation supports a workload-specific conclusion: Robocopy’s parallel-copy capability is a strong option for many small files over SMB, while File Explorer remains convenient for graphical and straightforward copies. The same material documents /J for large files, /Z for restartable transfers and the logging and metadata controls described above.
It does not provide a controlled numerical comparison of Robocopy and File Explorer across local drives, different hardware, file-size distributions or network conditions. Therefore, claims such as “Robocopy is always twice as fast” are not supported. The defensible method is to select the tool that matches the workload, run a representative test with a modest thread count and verify both performance and destination correctness.
