To enable voice chat in Roblox, the account holder must be at least 13, complete Roblox’s required age check, and join an experience that supports voice chat. Roblox currently lists ID verification and Facial Age Estimation as qualifying checks; phone verification does not unlock voice chat. Once approved, connect with the headphone icon or the experience’s voice settings, then unmute a microphone on the device or in the experience.
What you need before voice chat can work
Roblox voice chat is an optional communication feature. It is not switched on automatically, and passing one requirement does not guarantee that the control will appear. Access depends on four separate conditions: the user’s age, a completed age check, availability for that account and region, and support in the specific experience.

These conditions are independent. For example, an age-checked account can still be unable to join voice in an experience that does not support it, and an eligible account may not see the feature in a region where it is unavailable.

How Roblox’s age check works for voice chat
Roblox’s current voice-chat instructions identify two ways to complete the required check: ID verification or Facial Age Estimation. Which method you see can depend on your account and location. The availability of one method does not establish that the other will be offered.

ID verification
If Roblox presents ID verification, follow the verification flow shown in your account. Use the information and document requested by Roblox, and finish the process rather than closing it partway through. The official instructions do not treat ordinary phone-number verification as an alternative age check for voice chat.
Facial Age Estimation
Some accounts are offered Facial Age Estimation instead of, or in addition to, ID verification. Complete the on-screen process if it is available to you. Because Roblox varies age-check methods by region and account, another user may see different choices.
Why phone verification is not enough
Roblox’s current guidance says phone verification is not a valid way to gain voice-chat access. Adding or confirming a phone number therefore does not substitute for the required age check. Do not rely on changing a birthday or adding a phone number to bypass the eligibility process; those actions do not satisfy the current voice-chat requirement.

Step-by-step: enable voice chat in Roblox
- Confirm that the account holder is 13 or older. Voice chat is intended for users who meet Roblox’s current minimum age. If the account holder is younger, stop here; the feature cannot be enabled through the steps below.
- Start Roblox’s age-check process. In the account or communication settings, look for the prompt to verify age. Roblox may direct you to ID verification or Facial Age Estimation. Use the method actually offered to your account and complete every required step.
- Wait for the account to become eligible. Voice chat is not enabled by default, and completing a check does not add voice controls to every game. After the check finishes, open an experience known to support voice chat.
- Join a supporting experience. The feature is enabled per experience. Enter the game and look for its voice controls; an experience without voice support will not display a join-voice control for anyone.
- Connect to voice. In a supporting experience, select the headphone icon when it appears. Roblox also allows connection through the experience’s own settings and voice-chat toggle. On PlayStation, Roblox specifically directs users to connect through the in-experience settings.
- Check the microphone state. Make sure the device microphone is not muted. Roblox also provides microphone mute and unmute controls inside the experience. If the device lacks a suitable microphone, connect a headset that includes one, then check the mute state again.
- Test the control in the same experience. Leave the voice settings open long enough to confirm that the microphone can be muted and unmuted. If the headphone icon is absent, use the troubleshooting section below instead of assuming the microphone is defective.
Where to find the voice control
Headphone icon
For eligible accounts in a supporting experience, Roblox may show a headphone icon that lets you connect to voice. Select that icon to join, then use the microphone control to mute or unmute yourself.

Experience settings
The voice control can also be inside the experience’s settings. Open the settings supplied by the game and look for its voice-chat toggle. This route is the one Roblox calls out for PlayStation users, so console players should use the in-experience settings rather than looking for a separate account-wide switch.
Why there is no single universal switch
Voice chat is account-gated and experience-dependent. The account must pass the age check, and the game must support voice. As a result, a setting that is visible in one experience may not appear in another.
Microphone mute and unmute controls
Roblox’s instructions place microphone controls in two possible locations: on the device and inside the experience. Check both when other players cannot hear you.
- Device control: Make sure the operating system, console, or connected headset has not muted the microphone.
- In-experience control: Use the microphone button or voice control provided by the game to switch between muted and unmuted states.
- External microphone: If the built-in microphone is unsuitable or unavailable, use a headset with a microphone. Roblox’s setup guidance treats this as an option, not a universal requirement.
A successful age check does not itself prove that audio input is working. Voice eligibility and microphone availability are separate checks.

What to do when the voice-chat option is missing
Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a different reason the headphone icon or voice toggle may be absent.
1. Confirm the age-check status
Make sure the account completed the age-check flow rather than merely having a phone number attached. Roblox currently accepts ID verification or Facial Age Estimation when those methods are offered. If neither option is available, the account or region may not support the process at this time.
2. Check the account holder’s age
The current minimum is 13. An account that does not meet that threshold cannot gain voice access by turning on a setting, adding a phone number, or altering profile information.
3. Try an experience that supports voice
Voice chat is not available in every Roblox experience. If the icon is missing in one game, test only another experience that explicitly supports voice. Do not interpret the absence of a control in one game as proof that the account failed its age check.

4. Consider regional availability
Roblox says voice chat may not be available in your region even after the age check. Verification methods and feature availability can vary by region and account, so a missing icon may reflect availability rather than a device problem.
5. Use the correct platform path
On PlayStation, open the experience’s settings and connect there, as Roblox’s instructions specify. On other supported devices, look for the headphone icon first and then the experience’s voice settings.
6. Check mute states only after the control appears
If you can join voice but nobody hears you, inspect the device mute switch and the in-experience microphone control. A muted microphone explains a lack of audio, but it does not explain why the voice option is missing entirely.
Common mistakes that do not enable voice chat
- Relying on phone verification: Roblox no longer identifies phone verification as a valid route to voice access.
- Looking in an unsupported game: Account eligibility does not add voice controls to experiences that do not support the feature.
- Assuming voice is on by default: The feature is optional and requires the age-check process.
- Confusing a microphone problem with an eligibility problem: A muted or missing microphone affects speaking after connection; it does not replace the age check.
- Assuming every account sees the same verification menu: Roblox states that methods can vary by region and account.
- Trying to bypass the age requirement: The current minimum age is 13, and profile changes do not provide a legitimate substitute for the required check.
Privacy and communication controls
Roblox’s communication guidance treats age checks as a requirement for communication features. Users who are age-checked as 13 or older in supported regions can receive voice controls in games that support voice chat. This means the check is not merely an optional profile badge; it determines whether communication controls can be offered to the account.

Voice chat remains optional after eligibility. You can leave the feature disconnected, or mute your microphone from the device or within the experience. If you do not want to speak, keep the microphone muted rather than assuming that joining voice automatically disables input.
Platform-specific note: PlayStation
Roblox’s guidance specifically tells PlayStation users to connect through the settings inside the experience. After completing the age check, enter a voice-supported game, open its in-experience settings, and use the voice-chat control there. If the option is absent, apply the same account, region, experience-support, and microphone checks described above.
A quick diagnostic decision tree
- Are you 13 or older? If no, voice chat cannot be enabled. If yes, continue.
- Did Roblox complete an ID or Facial Age Estimation check? If no, complete the method offered to your account. Phone verification alone is not sufficient.
- Does the current experience support voice? If no, move to a supporting experience.
- Is the headphone icon or in-experience voice toggle visible? If yes, connect and check mute controls. If no, regional or account availability may be limiting access.
- Can other players hear you? If no, check the device microphone, headset connection, and in-experience mute state.
What a successful setup looks like
A correctly configured account has completed the required age check and enters an experience that supports voice. The user can then connect through the headphone icon or the game’s voice settings, see a microphone control, and switch that microphone between muted and unmuted states. If any one of those elements is missing, identify whether the cause is eligibility, regional availability, experience support, or audio input before repeating the setup.

Can I enable Roblox voice chat with only a verified phone number?
