Neither broker is the universal winner. Robinhood is the more focused choice for traders who prioritize a streamlined options experience, the Robinhood Legend desktop platform, and eligible extended-hours or overnight sessions. Fidelity is the stronger fit for investors who want deeper research, broader investment services, and documented order-routing controls in Active Trader Pro. Your likely options volume, margin balance, required order types, trading hours, and need for assets beyond stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and options should determine the choice.
Both advertise $0 online commissions for eligible U.S. stock and ETF trades, but a commission-free headline does not eliminate regulatory, exchange, or account-related charges. The most important comparison is the complete cost and workflow for the way you actually trade.

| Decision area | Robinhood | Fidelity | What it means for an active investor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online U.S. stock and ETF commissions | $0 commission, subject to applicable fees and conditions. | $0 for eligible online U.S. stock and ETF trades. | Compare regulatory, exchange and account charges rather than treating either headline as an all-in price. |
| Online stock and ETF options | Robinhood states that it charges no commissions or contract fees; pass-through and regulatory charges can still apply. | $0.65 per contract for standard online options accounts, according to the commission schedule accessed October 13, 2026. | Contract volume can make Fidelity’s per-contract charge material, while Robinhood’s fee disclosure still requires a review of non-commission charges. |
| Margin | Markets lower rates and says the first $1,000 of margin is interest-free, subject to eligibility and subscription conditions. | Publishes a tiered margin schedule; the base rate shown was effective September 18, 2026. | Calculate the rate tier for your expected debit balance and confirm any subscription requirement on the day you apply. |
| Active-trading software | Robinhood Legend desktop platform, an options-focused interface and extended-hours tools. | Active Trader Pro with research, directed or intelligent routing choices and an extended-hours directed ticket. | Choose based on the controls and information you use, not on appearance alone. |
| Extended and overnight access | Extended-hours trading for hundreds of popular stocks and ETFs; its 24 Hour Market listed more than 1,000 symbols as of March 31, 2026. | Active Trader Pro documents equity extended-hours and across-session trading through its directed ticket. | Eligibility, session windows and order rules differ by symbol and can change. |
| Investment breadth | Designed primarily around stocks, ETFs, options and related trading features. A 2026 third-party comparison said its reviewed lineup did not include bonds or mutual funds; verify the current list. | Positions itself as a broader brokerage and research service. | If you want one account for active trading and other asset classes, confirm each product directly before transferring assets. |
The company descriptions and fees in this table come from Fidelity’s commission and margin schedule, Robinhood’s trading-fee disclosure, Fidelity’s online-trading materials, Active Trader Pro FAQs, and Robinhood’s trading-platform overview. Fees and eligible symbols are volatile; recheck the live pages before opening or moving an account.
How the real cost comparison works
Stock and ETF trades
For ordinary online U.S. stock and ETF orders, both firms advertise a zero-dollar commission. That is useful for comparing headline pricing, but it is not a promise that every order produces a zero-dollar statement. Regulatory assessments, exchange charges, and account-related fees can apply. The amount and applicability depend on the transaction and account, so review the current fee disclosures instead of assuming that “commission-free” means “cost-free.”

Options contracts
Fidelity’s schedule lists a $0.65 online fee per options contract for standard accounts. Robinhood says stock and ETF options carry no commission or contract fee, while its fee disclosure identifies regulatory and pass-through charges. Those are different pricing structures, not proof that one account is cheaper for every options trader.
Use your own contract count to make the difference concrete. For example, if you open or close 100 Fidelity contracts during a period, the stated contract fee alone would be 100 × $0.65, or $65, before any other applicable charges. That is a calculation from the published rate, not a forecast of your total bill. At Robinhood, the absence of a commission or contract fee does not remove pass-through costs, and the applicable amount can vary by transaction.
Count both sides of a trade. Opening 100 contracts and later closing 100 contracts means 200 contracts for a per-contract calculation. Also distinguish contracts from orders: a single multi-contract order can still be charged by contract under a per-contract schedule.
Other charges to check
- Regulatory and exchange assessments that are passed through to customers.
- Account, transfer, paper-statement or other service charges shown in the current schedule.
- Option-exercise or assignment costs, if listed for the account type you use.
- Data, market-access or subscription charges tied to a particular feature or plan.
Do not add a charge to your spreadsheet unless the broker’s current disclosure says it applies to your account and transaction. The published schedules can change, and a promotional or one-time waiver should not be treated as a permanent price.
Margin: compare your balance, not a marketing slogan
Margin is where a broad “cheaper broker” claim becomes especially unreliable. The rate depends on your debit balance, the broker’s current tiers, and, in some cases, a paid subscription or other eligibility condition.
Fidelity’s schedule
Fidelity publishes a tiered margin schedule and identifies a base margin rate effective September 18, 2026. The rate is a dated schedule entry rather than a timeless promise; confirm the rate currently displayed for your balance before borrowing.

Robinhood’s advertised structure
Robinhood markets lower margin rates and says the first $1,000 of margin is interest-free. Eligibility, subscription status and the conditions of that allowance matter. “First $1,000” does not mean that a larger debit balance is free: interest can apply to the portion above the allowance under the current terms.

A practical calculation
Write down the average debit balance you expect, the number of days you will carry it and the annual rate shown for that balance. A simple estimate is:
estimated interest = average debit balance × annual rate × days borrowed ÷ 365
Run the calculation separately for each broker, then add any subscription cost required to obtain the advertised rate or allowance. Use the rate tier that applies to your actual balance, not the lowest rate shown in an advertisement. Interest can accrue while a position is losing money, so compare the borrowing cost with the risk of the strategy rather than focusing only on the nominal percentage.
Questions to answer before borrowing
- What is the rate for the exact debit-balance tier you expect?
- Is a subscription required, and does its price recur monthly or annually?
- Does the interest-free allowance apply automatically or only after enrollment?
- How does the broker handle maintenance requirements and forced liquidation?
- Can the rate change while your position is open?
If you cannot answer those questions from the live terms, do not choose a margin account on the basis of a headline rate.

Fidelity Active Trader Pro
Fidelity’s materials emphasize research and advanced trading functions. The Active Trader Pro FAQ describes direct or intelligent order-routing choices, allowing a trader to select a routing approach rather than relying only on a basic order ticket. Its directed trade ticket supports equity extended-hours and across-session trading, according to Fidelity’s documentation.

That matters when your strategy depends on where an order is routed, how an order behaves outside regular hours, or how much market information you want beside the ticket. Read the current platform documentation for supported securities, order types and session rules; availability and capabilities can change.
Robinhood Legend and the options workflow
Robinhood promotes Robinhood Legend as a desktop trading platform and highlights an options interface designed for active options use. Its platform materials also describe extended-hours access for eligible securities. The appeal is a concentrated workflow: watchlists, charts, order entry and options information are presented around frequent trading rather than a full-service research environment.
A clean interface can reduce friction, but it does not guarantee better execution or returns. Compare the specific controls you need—such as order duration, stop or limit behavior, multi-leg options handling, chart studies, alerts and data—against each broker’s current documentation before you move money.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Routing is not the same as execution quality
A broker may document intelligent or directed routing, but that description alone does not establish superior fills, lower slippage or higher returns. Execution depends on the security, liquidity, order size, market conditions and instructions you send. Treat routing choices as tools to evaluate, not as a promise of better performance.
Premarket, after-hours and overnight sessions
Robinhood’s eligible-session model
Robinhood advertises extended-hours trading for hundreds of popular stocks and ETFs and operates a 24 Hour Market for eligible symbols. Robinhood’s 2026 proxy statement reported more than 1,000 symbols available in that market as of March 31, 2026. That is a dated company statistic, not a guarantee that the list remains above 1,000 or that every listed security trades continuously.
“24 Hour Market” means defined sessions for eligible symbols. It does not mean every stock, ETF or option can trade without interruption, and it does not erase overnight liquidity and spread risks. Check the current symbol list, session timetable, order types and cancellation rules before relying on overnight access.

Fidelity’s Active Trader Pro documentation describes equity extended-hours and across-session trading through its directed ticket. The exact session windows, eligible securities and order instructions should be confirmed in the current ticket and help materials.

Why session access changes the decision
- News released outside regular hours can produce wider spreads and sharper price moves.
- Fewer participants can mean less available liquidity for a large order.
- An order accepted in one session may expire, be rejected or behave differently in another.
- Options generally have different trading availability from the underlying stock or ETF.
Choose overnight access only if you have a defined reason to use it and understand the order rules for the symbols you trade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Investment breadth beyond active stock and options trading
Active investors often keep long-term holdings, cash-management positions or fixed-income investments in the same account. Fidelity presents a broader service and research context in its official trading materials. A 2026 comparison from StockBrokers.com said Robinhood’s reviewed lineup did not include bonds or mutual funds. Product menus can change, so treat that as a dated comparison and verify current availability directly with both firms.
Ask whether you need bonds, mutual funds or another asset class before selecting a platform. If the answer is yes, an account that is excellent for stock and options execution may still require a second brokerage. Maintaining two accounts can complicate cash movement, tax reporting and portfolio monitoring, so include that administrative cost in your decision.
A step-by-step way to choose
- List every asset and order type you use. Write down stocks, ETFs, options strategies, bonds, mutual funds and any special order instructions. Mark which items are essential and which are optional.
- Measure your activity for a normal month. Count stock and ETF orders, options contracts opened and closed, average order size and the percentage placed outside regular hours. Use a representative month rather than an unusually busy week.
- Record your expected margin debit. Estimate the average balance and the longest period you would carry it. Compare the current tiered rate and any subscription requirement at both brokers.
- Check the live fee schedules. Review Fidelity’s commissions page and Robinhood’s fee disclosure immediately before applying. Note pass-through charges and account fees, not just commissions.
- Test your required workflow. Confirm that the platform supports the order duration, options structure, charting, alerts, routing choice and data display you actually use. Fidelity’s Active Trader Pro FAQ and Robinhood’s platform information describe documented capabilities.
- Verify trading sessions by symbol. Look up the exact stocks and ETFs you plan to trade overnight or in extended hours. Do not infer eligibility from the broker’s overall marketing claim.
- Check investment breadth. Confirm availability of bonds, mutual funds and any other long-term holdings before transferring assets.
- Calculate a twelve-month estimate. Add options contract charges, expected regulatory or service fees, margin interest and any subscription price. Keep assumptions next to every number so a rate or volume change is visible.
- Review transfer consequences. Download statements, identify unsupported positions and check how open options, fractional interests and cash will be handled before initiating a transfer. Do not close a position solely to move it until you understand the tax and market-impact consequences.
Which active investor is more likely to prefer each broker?
Robinhood may fit when
- Your activity is concentrated in stocks, ETFs and options supported by the platform.
- You value a streamlined options interface and the Robinhood Legend desktop experience.
- Eligible extended-hours or overnight sessions are central to your strategy.
- You have compared the current margin terms, including any subscription and the first-$1,000 allowance, with your expected balance.
- You accept that the platform’s focused product range may require another account for other investments.
Fidelity may fit when
- You want research and a broader brokerage-service context alongside active trading.
- You need the documented direct or intelligent routing choices in Active Trader Pro.
- You trade equities across extended sessions using a directed ticket.
- Your options volume is low enough that the per-contract charge is acceptable, or the platform’s research and controls justify it for your workflow.
- You prefer to consolidate active positions and longer-term investments in a broader account, subject to verifying the products you need.
These are conditional fits, not performance predictions. Neither broker’s feature list establishes superior investment returns, and neither platform can substitute for position sizing, risk limits and a tested strategy.

Best Value
Using the lowest advertised margin rate
A displayed rate may apply only to a particular balance tier or subscription. Match the rate to your debit balance and borrowing period.
Assuming overnight access is universal
Session access is symbol-specific. A broker’s list of hundreds or more than 1,000 eligible symbols does not include every security, and liquidity can be poor outside regular hours.
Treating a dated number as permanent
The more-than-1,000-symbol figure is measured as of March 31, 2026; Fidelity’s margin base-rate date is September 18, 2026; and the Fidelity options fee was accessed October 13, 2026. Recheck each item because fee schedules and eligible lists change.
Choosing on interface appearance
Visual simplicity is subjective. The decisive question is whether the ticket, data, order controls and support the strategy requires are present and reliable for the securities being traded.
Bottom line for an active-investor decision
Choose Robinhood when its options workflow, Legend desktop platform and eligible extended-hours access map directly to your trading routine and its current total costs are lower for your contract volume and margin needs. Choose Fidelity when research depth, broader investment services and documented routing controls matter more than a simplified interface or zero contract-fee headline.
Before opening or transferring an account, run your own order-count, options-contract and margin-balance numbers against the current official schedules. The better brokerage is the one that supports your required assets and order workflow at a cost you can verify—not the one with the most attractive single feature.
