To clean your car well before a long trip, work from the inside out: clear the clutter, vacuum, wipe the hard surfaces, clean the glass, wash the outside, then do a final sweep for loose items. AAA’s 2025 Summer Road Trip Car Prep Checklist explicitly tells drivers to wash and vacuum the car before travel. A clean car is more comfortable and easier to stay organized in on a long drive, but cleaning does not show that a car is safe or roadworthy. Those checks are a separate job, covered in the second half of this guide.
The cleaning sequence, step by step
Working in this order means you clean each surface once. Dirt knocked off the seats should not land on a dashboard you have already wiped.

- Remove trash and loose clutter. Empty door pockets, seat-back pockets, cup holders and the console. Take out wrappers, bottles, receipts and paper. Use a bag so nothing blows back in.
- Clear personal items and the cargo area. Take out anything you will not need on the trip, and clear the trunk or cargo floor so you can vacuum all the way to the back wall.
- Remove the floor mats and vacuum. Shake out the mats and set them aside. Vacuum seats, carpets, the footwells, under the seats and the cargo area. Vacuum before any wet cleaning so loose dirt does not turn to mud.
- Wipe the hard surfaces. Dashboard, center console, door panels, steering wheel, gear selector and grab handles. Use a cleaner that the owner’s manual or the product label lists for that surface. Apply it to a cloth rather than spraying it directly onto the cabin.
- Clean the interior glass and mirrors. Use a glass cleaner on a microfiber cloth. Keep liquid away from touchscreens and instrument displays unless the manual says the product is acceptable for them.
- Wash the exterior. Wash from the top down, rinse thoroughly and dry the car so water does not leave spots on the glass or paint.
- Put the mats back and do a final sweep. Reinstall the mats as described in the floor-mat section below. Then walk around the cabin and cargo area and confirm that nothing is loose, rolling or sitting where a foot or a load strap could catch it.
Optional: a basic cleaning kit
You do not need specialized equipment, but most drivers find the following easier to work with. AAA’s checklist does not endorse any particular product, brand or method, so choose items that match your vehicle’s surfaces.

- A vacuum with a brush and crevice attachment
- Several microfiber cloths, one set for glass and one for other surfaces
- An interior cleaner suited to your dashboard and trim, checked against the owner’s manual
- A glass cleaner
- Car-wash soap, a bucket and a wash mitt
- A trash bag for loose items
Cleaning is not a safety inspection
A washed car can still have worn tires, a weak battery or a warning light on the dashboard. NHTSA’s summer driving and road trip tips call for a set of mechanical and equipment checks before a long drive, and AAA’s checklist treats cleaning as one item among many. Use the table below as a separate list to work through after the cleaning is done.

Emergency roadside kit
NHTSA recommends carrying an emergency roadside kit. The items it lists include a tire-pressure gauge, jumper cables, a flashlight, water and paper towels. Add a kit before you clean the trunk, so that you put the kit back in a place you can reach it quickly.
Tire pressure: use the car’s number, not the tire’s
Tire pressure is the check most often done wrong. NHTSA says to compare your tires to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure, not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall.

- Check the tires when they are cold, meaning the car has not been driven far that day.
- Find the recommended pressure in the owner’s manual or on the placard on the driver’s door jamb.
- Set each tire to that value with your gauge.
- Check the spare as well.
Floor mats: size, fit and clearance
Floor mats can interfere with the accelerator or brake pedal if they are the wrong size, not installed as directed or not secured. NHTSA’s guidance is that correctly sized, properly installed and secured mats should not obstruct either pedal.

- Confirm the mats are sized for your model and seating position.
- Install them as the manufacturer directs, using any clips or anchors the vehicle provides.
- With the mats in place, press the accelerator and the brake through their full travel and confirm that nothing catches or bunches under either pedal.
When cleaning should wait for a mechanic
A wash is not a repair. If any of the following applies, have a qualified service technician inspect the car before the trip rather than treating cleaning as preparation:

- A warning light is on or a warning message has appeared
- A tire is visibly damaged or worn
- You see a fluid leak under the car
- You suspect a fault in the brakes, steering, engine or electrical system
Cleaning will make the car pleasant to ride in. Only the checks above, and a qualified inspection where something is wrong, will tell you whether it is ready for the road.
