Road to State Machines Part I: Why Correct Actions Depend on History

Software can choose the correct action only when it considers the relevant history of an entity. An order’s current state summarizes that history and helps determine what may happen next—but a status field alone does not enforce valid transitions or prove that an external event really occurred.

Why the same command can require different behavior

Consider a command such as ship_order(order). The command itself does not say whether shipping is appropriate. If the order is unpaid, it should not ship; if it is paid, shipping may be allowed; if it has already shipped, another request should not create a duplicate shipment; and if it was canceled, it must not ship.

The command’s correct outcome therefore depends on what happened earlier. A system needs a way to represent the relevant consequence of that history and use it when deciding whether to accept an operation.

State is about what may happen next

Ordinary data describes an entity; behavioral state affects how the system may respond to it. The dividing line depends on context. An address is usually descriptive information, but changing it may become restricted after a carrier has the package because that change could affect fulfillment.

For a simplified order lifecycle, the useful states are created, paid, and shipped:

State What the system knows Relevant next operation Supporting payment data
created The order exists, but payment has not yet moved it to the paid stage. Capture payment; a successful capture moves it to paid. Payment details may not yet exist.
paid Payment has been recorded as captured for the order. Shipping may move it to shipped. Payment details are needed for operations such as issuing a refund.
shipped The order has reached the shipped stage. The simplified progression has no further transition specified here. Payment details remain distinct from the lifecycle state.

This progression is a teaching example, not a claim that every commerce system uses exactly these states. It assumes at most one full-amount payment per order and one currency.

State, supporting data, and history are different

State is a useful summary of the past, not a full record of it. A paid state may be sufficient to decide whether shipping is eligible. It is not necessarily sufficient to issue a refund: that operation may require payment details such as the provider transaction information.

  • Lead your men into battle, every move is crucial
  • Includes 2 x 40 pre-printed playing pieces, Game board, Screen and 2 sorting trays for the pieces
  • Suitable for 2 players, aged 8+
  • State helps determine which lifecycle operations are eligible.
  • Supporting data supplies the information needed to perform an operation, such as refunding a payment.
  • History records the events that led to the current situation.

As Can Burak Sofyalioglu puts it, “The state summarizes a relevant consequence of the past. It does not preserve everything that happened.”

Why a status field does not make transitions safe

A field named status can record the stage an order is believed to occupy, but that does not by itself prevent invalid changes. If it accepts unrestricted strings, it can contain an unknown value. Even if it accepts only known labels, code could still move an order from created straight to shipped, or record paid without consistent payment details.

“The status field records the order’s current stage. It does not enforce the rules for reaching that stage.”

Correctness requires the transition rules to be applied when operations run: payment capture should move the order from created to paid, and shipping should move it from paid to shipped. Repeated or disallowed requests need handling rather than blind updates. The status is information used by that logic, not a substitute for it.

A local state is not proof of an external event

There is another boundary: the system’s record and the outside world can diverge. A local paid value alone does not prove that a payment provider captured funds. For example, the provider might report success while the application fails to update its own record. The local state then fails to reflect the external outcome.

That distinction matters when designing operations around external services. The lifecycle state can guide the application, but it should not be mistaken for independent evidence that a provider completed the corresponding action. The simplified example explains the modeling problem; it does not specify a production payment integration or guarantee external processing consistency.

How to apply the model

  1. Identify operations whose correct result depends on what has already happened, such as capturing payment, shipping, or refunding.
  2. Choose a state summary that captures the historical facts relevant to deciding whether each operation is allowed.
  3. Keep the state’s purpose separate from supporting data needed to carry out an operation and from the event history that explains how the entity reached its current condition.
  4. Define and enforce valid transitions at the operation boundary; do not assume that storing a status automatically restricts changes.
  5. For actions involving an external provider, distinguish the application’s local record from evidence of the provider’s outcome.

These distinctions make it easier to reason about what a system knows, what it is allowed to do next, and where its record may not match reality.
