Rivercell Raises $25 Million to Build an AI Model of Cell Responses to Drugs

Rivercell announced a $25 million seed round on October 7, 2026, to expand its Paris laboratory, scale biological data generation, and launch an AI Virtual Cell program. The company’s goal is to build a model that predicts how living human cells respond to drugs and genetic changes. The announcement describes a research ambition and planned work, not a clinically validated system or proven treatment benefit.

What Rivercell announced

Paris-based Rivercell said the seed round was led by HV, with HCVC, Alven, and Bpifrance Digital Venture also participating. The company said it will use the funding to scale its data-generation platform, expand its Paris wet lab, and launch its AI Virtual Cell program. These details come from Rivercell’s October 7, 2026 announcement, reproduced by AOL and attributed to Business Wire.

What Rivercell is trying to build

Rivercell describes a platform that produces interventional, time-resolved, multimodal single-cell data, then uses that data to train what it calls a “world model of the cell.” Its stated goal is to predict how living cells respond to drugs and genetic changes. The company says it wants to learn patterns across disease-relevant cell behaviors rather than focus on a single disease.

From snapshots to changing cells

A static measurement captures a cell at one point in time. A time-resolved approach aims to track how cells change after an intervention, such as exposure to a drug or a genetic change. Rivercell says it is building its data platform around these interventions and changes over time, using multiple measurement types and biological layers.

Why the data-generation platform matters

Rivercell says existing laboratory instruments were not designed to capture data at the scale it seeks, so it is developing purpose-built infrastructure. Its description of this infrastructure as a “GPU for the bio data center” is company positioning, not an established technical category. The funding is intended to support the data engine as well as the model trained on its outputs.

Can AI already predict how cells respond to treatment?

Not on the evidence in this announcement. Rivercell says it is developing a system intended to predict cellular responses; the release does not report a dataset size, model benchmark, peer-reviewed result, clinical validation, or improved patient outcome. A model’s stated goal is not proof that it can reliably predict an individual patient’s response or identify an effective treatment.

The distinction matters because a research model can be promising without being ready for clinical use. Demonstrating that a model predicts cellular behavior would require performance evidence; establishing treatment benefit would require further evidence in relevant clinical settings. Rivercell’s announcement does not provide either.

Who is behind Rivercell?

Rivercell says it began in summer 2025 with Yann Fleureau as CEO, and that Eric Durand joined as chief scientific officer in 2026. The release describes Fleureau as a co-founder of Cardiologs and says Philips acquired that company in 2021.

Rank #3

Fabian Theis, whom the announcement identifies as Director of the Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich, Scientific Director of Helmholtz AI, and Professor of Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems at the Technical University of Munich, said he was joining Rivercell’s Scientific Advisory Board. He described understanding cellular responses to perturbations over time as a major open problem in biology. This is an endorsement quoted in the company announcement, not an independent evaluation of Rivercell’s model.

What the $25 million does—and does not—establish

The round gives Rivercell capital for its announced laboratory and platform plans. It does not, by itself, establish how well the model works. The announcement offers no comparison with competing systems and no independent performance results, so it cannot support a ranking or a claim that Rivercell has already outperformed other approaches.

For now, the clearest description is that Rivercell is building biological data-generation infrastructure and an AI model aimed at learning how cells respond to interventions. Whether that work produces reliable predictions remains to be demonstrated.
