River Town Factory: Prologue beginner guide—what to do first in the free Steam RPG

Start in the Central Region, use its martial-arts encounters and relic caves to learn the exploration loop, and postpone a large factory until you understand which buildings and technologies the prologue actually provides. The strongest match for this guide is River Town Factory: Prologue, iFAction Studio’s Steam RPG/simulation released March 27, 2024. The identification is based on its combination of regional exploration, martial arts, relic caves and automated production; if your copy is a different game, do not assume these systems or progression limits apply.

The free prologue is a learning slice rather than a miniature version of the entire game. Its Steam description says only 15% of buildings and technologies are available. That makes the best first session an experiment: gather materials, test combat, build a short and reliable production chain, and learn what transfers before investing in a permanent-looking layout.

What the prologue is designed to teach

River Town Factory: Prologue joins two progression paths that are easy to treat as separate games. You explore the Central Region and its martial-arts and relic-cave content to obtain materials and learn the world. You then use those materials in production, gradually moving from basic goods toward more involved automated assembly. The Steam listing describes production lines that can run “from wooden planks to circuit boards,” with the player designing every step.

That wording implies a loop rather than a one-time tutorial: exploration supplies inputs, production turns inputs into construction or crafting resources, and better infrastructure makes later exploration and expansion easier. Because the prologue exposes only a fraction of the full building and technology catalogue, the goal is not to discover a final factory design. The goal is to understand the order in which you make decisions.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Explore first: establish where useful materials, caves and encounters are located.
  • Fight deliberately: use early martial-arts encounters to learn timing and risk, not to clear every point immediately.
  • Automate in short chains: make one dependable input-to-output route before adding branches.
  • Record what is locked: a missing building or technology may be unavailable because of the prologue cap, not because you missed a quest.

Your first session: a practical order of operations

  1. Enter the Central Region and orient yourself. Walk the accessible routes before committing to construction. Note resource clusters, cave entrances, encounter locations and any obvious return paths. The region is explicitly part of the prologue, so it is the correct place to establish your baseline rather than rushing to build.
  2. Collect only enough material for an initial test. Gather the resources needed for the simplest available crafting or construction steps. Avoid stripping every nearby node if doing so causes a long, empty return trip; you are learning the route as much as collecting inventory.
  3. Take an early martial-arts encounter when your supplies are replaceable. Treat the first fights as practice. Observe attack timing, distance, recovery and the point at which retreat is safer than trading damage. Do not assume a particular control scheme or enemy roster: the authoritative listing does not provide bindings or an enemy table.
  4. Return and make the smallest useful production setup. Convert gathered materials into the earliest available output, then watch the whole input-to-output path. Confirm that inputs arrive, processing completes and the result can be collected or routed onward before adding another machine.
  5. Explore again with a specific purpose. Once the first chain works, revisit the region for the material that limits it. This turns exploration into a targeted supply run instead of unfocused wandering.
  6. Check progression gates before expanding. If a desired building, technology, relationship feature or Oracle Temple activity is unavailable, note it as a prologue boundary. Do not redesign your factory around a system the free slice cannot provide.
  7. Make a transfer decision. After you understand the loop and the limits, decide whether the expanded release is worth buying. Prologue save data can transfer to the official version, but several kinds of progress remain capped in the free version.

Where to explore first: making the Central Region useful

Map the routes before chasing rewards

The Central Region is more than a backdrop for the opening fights. On your first pass, identify a safe return route and the locations that are likely to matter repeatedly: material gathering areas, martial-arts encounters and relic caves. You do not need a perfect map. A simple mental or written note of “resource area near the return route” and “cave beyond the combat section” is enough to reduce wasted trips while you learn the systems.

Keep the first expedition short enough that you can return with materials intact. The prologue does not publish a complete travel, inventory or respawn specification, so avoid planning around unverified assumptions such as exact node timers or guaranteed drops. Use what you can observe in your own session and treat the first run as a reconnaissance pass.

Use relic caves as deliberate objectives

Relic caves are specifically named in the Steam description as part of the Central Region. Approach them as objectives that may combine navigation, combat and material discovery. Before entering, make sure you have enough supplies to recover from an unsuccessful attempt and a clear route back to your production area. If a cave encounter is beyond your current ability, leave it marked and return after improving the production side of your loop rather than repeatedly losing time on an unknown difficulty spike.

Let factory needs guide the second trip

After your first production test, identify the input that stops the chain. Your next exploration trip should target that bottleneck. This is the most efficient way to connect the RPG and factory halves: you are no longer gathering everything, only the material that increases what the factory can actually do.

How to survive the first fights when exact combat data is unavailable

The available Steam information confirms martial-arts content but does not list enemy health, attack patterns, damage values, controls or a recommended build. The following method therefore focuses on transferable decision-making rather than claiming a specific combo or stat priority.

Observe before committing

  • Spend the opening moments watching how an opponent approaches and when it becomes vulnerable.
  • Use one safe attack or short exchange to learn recovery time before attempting a longer sequence.
  • Keep enough space to disengage. A fight that ends with you alive and able to return is more valuable than a faster fight that consumes all supplies.

Separate practice from progression

Fight near a known route during your early sessions so a mistake does not strand you far from your materials. If the game offers a way to recover, heal or reset outside combat, use it before entering a relic cave. Because the prologue’s exact recovery rules are not stated in the listing, verify the behavior in your own build instead of relying on a guide written for another version.

Use production to reduce combat pressure

When a fight repeatedly stops exploration, ask whether the factory can supply a better preparation item or construction upgrade. The intended design joins combat and production: materials from exploration feed automation, and automation should eventually make the next expedition more manageable. Do not assume that every combat upgrade is available in the prologue; the 15% building-and-technology limit can leave a planned solution outside the free slice.

When to start building the factory

Start as soon as you can make the simplest available production step reliably, but do not scale as soon as you place the first machine. A small working chain teaches more than a large idle footprint. Build only after you have enough material to test the entire route from input to output and enough nearby space to observe it without constant demolition.

Signs that it is time to automate

  • You have made the same basic item more than once and understand which input it consumes.
  • You can identify the material that exploration must supply for the chain to continue.
  • You have a repeatable return route from the Central Region to the production area.
  • You have checked that the next building or technology you want is available in the prologue.

Signs that you are scaling too early

  • You are placing machines before confirming what they accept or produce.
  • Your layout depends on buildings or technologies that the free slice may not include.
  • You are collecting large stockpiles without a known use.
  • You are expanding because the factory looks empty, not because a bottleneck requires capacity.

How to build your first production chain

The listing’s wooden-plank-to-circuit-board example establishes the game’s direction, not a complete recipe list. Exact recipes, input quantities, processing times, machine costs and connection rules are not stated in the available authoritative description. Use the following sequence with the recipes and labels shown by your own game.

  1. Identify the first transformation. Find the earliest available machine or station that converts a raw material into a usable intermediate. Write down the input and output as displayed in the interface.
  2. Place input and processing close together. A compact first chain is easier to inspect and rebuild. Leave enough room to access the machine and extend the line if the next technology becomes available.
  3. Run the chain manually before adding automation. Confirm that the input is accepted, the process completes and the output appears where you expect. If any stage fails, fix that stage before introducing another one.
  4. Add the next transformation only after the first is stable. For a longer path such as the listing’s wooden-plank-to-circuit-board progression, extend one step at a time. Do not build the final stage while an earlier stage is starved of inputs.
  5. Watch the bottleneck. If an output is waiting, the next machine may be slower or missing an input. If a machine is idle, the previous stage or your gathering route may be the problem. Change one variable at a time so you know what solved it.
  6. Keep a rebuild-friendly layout. Since only 15% of buildings and technologies are available in the prologue, leave expansion space and avoid treating the first arrangement as permanent.

A simple way to diagnose a stalled line

What you observe Likely question to ask First action
The first machine is idle Is its raw input available and routed correctly? Return to the Central Region and verify the material source, then inspect the machine’s input display.
The first output accumulates Is the next stage unlocked, placed and supplied? Check whether the next building or technology is available in the prologue before expanding.
Later stages stop while earlier stages run Which intermediate is missing? Trace the chain backward from the stopped stage and repair the first missing input.
You need to demolish repeatedly Are you designing around systems not included in the free slice? Pause expansion, record the current limits and keep the layout modular.

How exploration and production should feed each other

A useful rhythm is scout, gather, process, improve, scout again. Scouting tells you where the next supply is. Gathering provides the raw input. Processing turns it into an intermediate or construction resource. Improvement removes the current bottleneck. The second scouting trip then has a clear purpose.

This rhythm prevents two common dead ends. Exploring without production leaves you with materials but no stronger infrastructure. Building without exploration leaves machines idle because the required input is absent. The prologue’s deliberately limited technology set makes this balance especially important: you cannot solve every bottleneck with a newly unlocked building, so route planning and modest automation matter.

What is limited in the free prologue

iFAction Studio’s 2024 Steam listing states that only 15% of buildings and technologies are available in the prologue. It also identifies specific progression caps:

System What the prologue allows What to plan for
Buildings and technologies 15% of the available set, according to the Steam listing. Use early layouts for practice; expect the full game to offer systems that cannot be tested here.
Central Region Exploration of the Central Region, including martial arts and relic caves. Learn the region and combat loop before deciding whether to continue.
Relationships Progress remains capped in the free slice. Do not interpret a relationship ceiling as a failed quest or missing item.
Oracle Temple Access remains capped in the prologue. Record the limit rather than spending time searching for an unavailable unlock.
Save transfer Prologue save data can transfer to the official version. Keep your save if you may continue, but verify that your platform and game versions recognize the transfer.

The listing does not specify exactly which 15% of buildings and technologies are included, nor does it publish a complete transfer matrix for every item, quest state or relationship value. Treat the transfer statement as confirmation that the save can carry forward, not as a promise that every kind of progress is uncapped.

How to decide whether the prologue is enough

The prologue is enough for learning the core loop if you want to

  • Explore the Central Region and understand the relationship between resource gathering and construction.
  • Practice martial-arts encounters before committing money to the full release.
  • Visit relic caves that are included in the region’s prologue content.
  • Build and troubleshoot a short automated line.
  • See whether the combination of RPG exploration and factory planning suits you.

You will need the official version if you want to

  • Access the buildings and technologies outside the prologue’s 15% allowance.
  • Continue relationship progression beyond the free slice’s cap.
  • Progress farther through Oracle Temple content.
  • Design a long-term factory around the complete technology tree.

The sensible purchase test is therefore experiential rather than numerical. Spend enough time to complete the scout-gather-process cycle and build one stable line. If that loop is enjoyable even with the visible caps, the transfer feature gives you a way to continue without discarding the prologue save. If the loop itself is not appealing, the locked content is unlikely to change that fundamental preference.

Common first-session mistakes and recoveries

Building a huge footprint immediately

Why it hurts: the prologue exposes only a small part of the eventual building and technology set, so early assumptions can force a rebuild.

Letting outputs pile up without a next step

Why it hurts: production is consuming materials and space without improving your ability to explore or build.

Recovery: identify the next required input or construction use, then make the next gathering trip serve that purpose.

Relying on an unverified control or recipe guide

Why it hurts: the authoritative listing does not provide control bindings, exact recipes, numeric costs or enemy tables, and details can differ by build.

Recovery: use the in-game controls and recipe panels in your version, record the values you observe and avoid treating an unverified number as universal.

What is and is not documented

The documented facts are enough to plan a first session: the Central Region is available; it contains martial-arts and relic-cave content; the game supports automated production lines; the listing uses wooden planks and circuit boards as an example of production scope; the prologue exposes 15% of buildings and technologies; save data can transfer; and relationship and Oracle Temple progress remain capped.

They are not enough to publish a reliable recipe spreadsheet, optimal factory blueprint, enemy ranking, control guide, performance benchmark or exact cost table. None of those details should be guessed from the feature description. For those decisions, read the labels and numbers in your installed version and expect them to change when the full game adds systems beyond the prologue.
