What each Risk of Rain 2 DLC adds
Both expansions add survivors and new gameplay systems, but they emphasize different ways to change a run. The counts below are publisher-reported content descriptions, not measures of quality.

Survivors of the Void
Gearbox’s publisher-provided description, hosted on the Nintendo UK listing, names two survivors: Railgunner, a ranged character built around scoping and weak spots, and Void Fiend, whose abilities change as corruption rises. Its central item mechanic is the Void Item: taking one permanently transforms its corresponding normal item for that run. The listing reports 14 Void Items, five pieces of equipment, four lunar items, and 18 standard items, as well as stages including Aphelian Sanctuary, Sulfur Pools, and Siphoned Forest. Nintendo UK’s Survivors of the Void listing gives 23 November 2023 as the Switch release date; that is the regional platform date shown there, not the original PC launch date.
Hallowed Concepts
The Steam listing introduces Acolyte and Enforcer, new stages and enemies, and Trials, including Winnowing challenges. Its item system centers on Hexes exchanged for Hallowed Items, while the N’tormat curio offers pages that grant abilities at a cost. 2K’s October 7, 2026 patch notes enumerate 14 Hexes, 11 Hallowed Items, three standard items, three new standard stages, several Trial stages, three bosses, three enemies, one elite type, and six interactables. These are publisher-reported counts. The Steam listing for Hallowed Concepts says the base game is required and lists an October 8, 2026 release.

Which expansion fits the way you want to play?
| What matters to you | Start with Survivors of the Void | Start with Hallowed Concepts |
|---|---|---|
| Survivors | Railgunner’s scoped, weak-spot play or Void Fiend’s corruption-driven abilities | Acolyte or Enforcer |
| Run-changing items | Void Items permanently transform a corresponding normal item for that run | Hexes and Hallowed Items, with abilities and costs also tied to the N’tormat curio |
| Challenge format | New stages and a Void-focused threat | Explicitly advertised Trials, including Winnowing challenges |
If you want to experiment with the Void Item transformation system and its two survivors, begin with Survivors of the Void. If the draw is structured Trials, Winnowing challenges, or Hallowed Concepts’ Hex and curio mechanics, begin there instead. Neither set of official descriptions supports calling one expansion easier, better balanced, more popular, or better value.
Do you need the base game?
Yes. The Hallowed Concepts Steam listing explicitly says it requires Risk of Rain 2. The expansions are DLC for the base game, not standalone games.

How DLC ownership works in co-op
Each official listing says one player in a lobby needs to own that expansion for its monsters, levels, and items to appear for the group. That does not give non-owners the expansion’s survivor selection or permanent unlock rights: a player who does not own the DLC cannot select its new survivors or permanently unlock its content.
