A free update arrived alongside it, but that update’s changes are separate from the paid expansion.
What you need before you buy
- Base game: Steam lists Hallowed Concepts as requiring Risk of Rain 2. You must own the base game to use the expansion.
- Platforms: The publisher’s launch notes name PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This article does not confirm a per-platform release schedule beyond that shared October 8, 2026 date.
- Price: When Steam was checked on October 9, 2026, the US listing showed $14.99. Storefront prices change by region and over time, so confirm the price on your own storefront before purchasing.

What the expansion adds
The publisher’s October 8, 2026 patch notes list the expansion’s contents. These counts come from 2K’s notes and have not been independently tested in play.

Trials, Hexes, and Hallowed Items
The developer’s Steam Community announcements describe Trials as pocket realms, each with its own objective and reward. Hexes apply negative effects to your run. Hallowed Items are the reward path that corresponds to those Hexes. The expansion is built around this challenge-and-reward loop, so Trials are where most of its new systems meet.

Paid expansion versus the free update
The same day, the free base-game update arrived. It is not part of the paid expansion. The publisher’s notes separate the two, and the following changes belong to the free update rather than Hallowed Concepts:

Playing with friends: the ownership rule
Shared play depends on who owns the expansion. Xbox’s product page describes how lobbies work: when one player in a lobby owns Hallowed Concepts, its monsters, levels, and items appear for everyone in that lobby. Players who do not own the expansion still cannot select its new Survivors, and they cannot permanently unlock its new items, logbooks, or other content.

Buy Hallowed Concepts if you already own Risk of Rain 2 and want the new Survivors, Trials, and Hexes-and-Hallowed-Items system. If you play mainly with friends who do not own it, remember that only owners can unlock its new content permanently, and on Xbox only owners can select its new Survivors.
