Let compatible devices Direct Play it unchanged. Set Plex’s subtitle language and selection preferences, then make a separate HandBrake copy only for rooms that cannot play the original. This preserves one high-quality master while avoiding unnecessary server transcoding.
What this setup does
A Blu-ray-to-Plex workflow has two separate jobs: preserve the disc once, then deliver a version each client can play. MakeMKV remuxes the selected title into an MKV container without re-encoding the compressed video and audio. Plex then examines the client’s container, codecs, bitrate and resolution capabilities and chooses Direct Play, Direct Stream or transcoding.

MakeMKV describes MKV (Matroska Video) as a container that can hold unlimited video, audio and subtitle tracks, plus chapters and metadata. For exactly the same content, it says an MKV is roughly 40% smaller than the corresponding Blu-ray files. That figure is MakeMKV’s own description, not an independent benchmark, and the result varies by disc structure.
Plex does not directly accept disc-image formats such as ISO, IMG, Video_TS or BDMV. Those must be remuxed first. Do not expect every commercial disc to work: MakeMKV states that commercial Blu-rays use technological protection measures and that its software does not remove those measures. Follow the law that applies where you live.

Build the library in the right order
1. Prepare the drive, storage and network
Use an optical Blu-ray drive connected to the computer running MakeMKV. Put the resulting files on storage that Plex can read reliably, such as a local disk or NAS. If several rooms will stream at once, plan the network as part of the system: wired Ethernet to the server and fixed devices is usually more predictable than a weak wireless link, while a capable router, switch or access point helps prevent avoidable congestion.
Keep the original MKV as the archival copy. You can create playback derivatives later; replacing the master with a smaller encode discards options you may need for another client or a future audio setup.

2. Remux the main title with MakeMKV
- Insert the Blu-ray and open MakeMKV. Select the optical drive when it appears.
- Let the disc scan, then identify the feature-length title. Disc menus often contain many short extras and duplicate playlist entries, so check duration and chapter count before choosing.
- Expand the title and retain the video stream, the audio languages your household uses, commentary tracks you want to keep, and the subtitle tracks required for normal and foreign-language dialogue. Keep chapters and metadata when offered.
- Set the output to MKV and start the remux. The result is a file containing the selected streams; it is not a disc image.
Keeping every track is optional. The useful rule is to remove only material you are certain no client or viewer will need. A single MKV can carry multiple audio and subtitle choices, so you do not need a separate file for each language.

3. Name and add the files to Plex
Use a consistent movie folder and filename scheme, for example Movies/Film Title (Year)/Film Title (Year).mkv. Put television episodes in a separate series structure if you are also importing shows. In Plex, create or open the relevant library, point it at the top-level folder, and let the scanner identify the title. Correct naming makes it easier to select the intended version when you later add an encoded copy.

These preferences work only when the embedded track has accurate language metadata. Plex says a track whose language is unknown is not treated as a match for your preferred language, even if the subtitle text is actually in that language. In the movie’s playback menu, verify that each embedded track is labeled correctly (for example, English, French or Spanish) rather than “Unknown.” If the wrong language is selected, correct the track metadata or choose the desired track manually while testing.

Understand forced subtitles
Some films include a subtitle track marked as forced for names, signs or dialogue in a different language. Plex can select forced subtitles when foreign audio is present, provided the track is correctly flagged and labeled. A full subtitle track and a forced-only track are not interchangeable: retaining both gives Plex and viewers the choice.

Why automatic selection sometimes fails
- The track language is unknown or mislabeled.
- The client app has its own subtitle preference that overrides the account setting.
- The selected subtitle format is not supported by the client and causes Plex to convert the video.
- The disc contains several similarly named tracks, and the wrong one was retained during remuxing.
Direct Play, Direct Stream and transcoding
Plex’s decision is made per client, not just per movie. The same MKV can Direct Play on one television and transcode on another because their supported containers, codecs, bitrates, resolutions or subtitle renderers differ.
Direct Play
When the client supports the file as delivered, Plex sends it unchanged. This is the lowest-processing path and preserves the source quality. Leave Direct Play enabled unless you have a specific troubleshooting reason to disable it.
Direct Stream
If the streams are compatible but the container is not, Plex can repackage them into a client-friendly container. Plex describes Direct Streaming as using very little processing power with no loss in video quality because the underlying audio and video are not re-encoded.
Full video transcoding
When a codec, bitrate, resolution or subtitle format is incompatible, Plex decodes and re-encodes the video. An incompatible subtitle stream can trigger a full video transcode even when the video itself would otherwise play directly. Burning subtitles into the picture is especially demanding because the server must create new video frames.
Diagnose a room that transcodes
- Start playback and open the Plex dashboard to see which stream is being converted.
- Check the client’s direct-play and direct-stream settings, then confirm that the app is not forcing a lower quality or remote-stream limit.
- Try the same title with subtitles off. If the session changes to Direct Play, the subtitle format or track is the incompatibility.
- Try another audio or subtitle track from the MKV. A single unsupported track can be the trigger.
- If the client still cannot handle the source codec, bitrate or resolution, keep the archival MKV and create a second version for that client.
Archival MKV or smaller playback copy?
| Criterion | Archival MKV | Smaller HandBrake copy |
|---|---|---|
| Tracks and chapters | Retains the selected original video, audio, subtitles, chapters and metadata in one container. | Contains only the tracks and settings chosen for the encode; extras may be omitted. |
| File size | MakeMKV says the same content is roughly 40% smaller than Blu-ray files; the exact size depends on the disc. | No fixed size is established; it depends on codec, resolution, bitrate and audio settings. |
| Direct Play compatibility | Depends on each client’s support for the disc’s codecs, container, bitrate and resolution. | Can be tuned to a problem client’s supported format. |
| Server CPU use | Usually none when Direct Played, light repackaging when Direct Streamed, and high when transcoded. | May avoid live transcoding on a weaker client, at the cost of an additional encode. |
| Subtitle behavior | Offers the broadest choice, but an unsupported track can force video transcoding. | Lets you create a client-friendly subtitle format or burn subtitles in, but that choice is permanent for the copy. |
| Recommended role | Keep as the library’s source/master file. | Add as a second Plex version only when a tested client needs it. |
Plex explicitly supports keeping multiple versions of the same movie. HandBrake is therefore a compatibility tool, not a reason to discard the remux. Give the derivative a clear filename or let Plex group it as an alternate version so viewers can select it when necessary.
Quick Recap
What to keep after the first successful test
- The untouched archival MKV with the tracks and chapters you selected.
- A written record of which rooms Direct Play the source and which require a derivative.
- Correct language and forced-track metadata for every subtitle stream you expect Plex to choose.
- One client-compatible HandBrake version only where testing proves it is needed.
