Riot confirms it is working on an MMORPG set in the League universe, but has not confirmed a release date, gameplay systems, platforms, or business model in the sources available through October 3, 2026. The project’s direction was reset before Riot said it wanted something that would meaningfully evolve the MMO genre—not simply put a Runeterra theme on a conventional game.
What is Riot’s League of Legends MMO?
Riot’s official MMO recruiting page describes the project as “an MMORPG based in the League universe.” That establishes its broad genre and setting: it is intended to be a massively multiplayer online role-playing game in Runeterra, the fictional world associated with League of Legends.

It does not establish which region or era the game will use, what story it will tell, who players will embody, or whether familiar League characters will appear. The recruiting page has also listed roles in areas such as gameplay engineering, game design, UX design, game art, and production; those hiring needs do not confirm particular features.

In a March 21, 2024 report, Game Developer said Riot had restarted the project’s direction. The report attributed the explanation to Riot co-founder Marc Merrill: the MMO felt too much like the “mothership” game. Merrill said it could not be a standard MMO with a “Runeterra coat of paint”; it needed to feel like a “significant evolution of the genre.”

This was a reset of the project’s direction, not a reported cancellation. The same report said the change had happened some time earlier and that Riot expected it might be several years before it discussed the project again. The creative ambition is clear; what the new direction means in actual play has not been disclosed.
What gameplay has Riot shown?
The reviewed official project page and reporting do not confirm specific gameplay systems or show concrete gameplay footage. In particular, they do not establish combat mechanics, classes, quests, progression, group activities, PvP, or crafting. Those are unknowns, not features that can safely be inferred from the MMORPG label or the League setting.

Riot co-founder Marc Merrill discussed the challenge and rationale of making an MMO in an October 2026 interview covered by GamesRadar+. That coverage did not include a gameplay reveal or release date. Merrill described Runeterra’s established fanbase as one reason the effort might be worth pursuing, not as evidence that the game will succeed.

Is the League MMO still in development?
The available evidence points to an ongoing project, but does not establish a production milestone or schedule. Riot’s official MMO recruiting page remains a project description, and PC Gamer reported in January 2026 that former World of Warcraft lead producer Raymond Bartos joined the MMO team. A reported hire is evidence of staffing activity; it does not show how far development has progressed or when the game might launch.

When is the League MMO coming out?
Riot has not confirmed a release date or release window in the sources reviewed through October 3, 2026. GamesRadar+’s October 2026 interview coverage reports no date from Merrill. Treat any specific launch year or window as unconfirmed unless Riot announces it.
What platforms, payment model, or PC requirements are confirmed?

Can you learn about Runeterra before the MMO?
Riot’s 2020 Realms of Runeterra announcement describes a physical setting book covering eleven regions, histories, factions, characters, stories, and artwork. It can provide background on the broader fictional world, but it is not an MMO guide and does not reveal which parts of Runeterra the game will use. The dated announcement does not establish the book’s current language options or availability.
