If you cannot view history on Ring, first identify what is failing: you may be viewing the wrong history screen, the event may never have been recorded, the recording may have expired under Ring’s subscription and storage rules, or the app may be unable to retrieve a recording that still exists. The correct fix depends on which of those four situations applies.
Open the correct Ring history view
Ring provides a history view for one device and another that combines events from multiple devices. Choosing the wrong one can make a working camera appear to have no history.

History for one doorbell or camera
- Open the Ring app and open the dashboard menu.
- Choose Devices.
- Select the specific doorbell or camera.
- Open the device’s Event History tile.
Event types vary by device, so the available filters and labels may not be identical on every doorbell or camera.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHistory across devices
From the dashboard menu, choose History instead of opening an individual device. Use the device and event-type filters to narrow the list. If the list is empty, clear filters and verify that the selected location is the one where the device is installed.

Viewing history in a browser
Sign in at Ring.com and choose History from the dashboard. Ring’s former standalone desktop-app experience has moved to Ring.com. Supported browsers listed by Ring include Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, and Opera.
Check the time zone before assuming events are missing
The Ring app adjusts history timestamps to the traveler’s current time zone. If you are away from home, an event can appear at a different clock time while remaining the same event. Compare the date, device, and event details before concluding that a recording disappeared.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most relevant checks | What can resolve it |
|---|---|---|
| No event appears in Event History | Device, location, filters, subscription coverage, motion settings | Open the correct device view, clear filters, confirm the plan was active when the event occurred, and review motion zones, sensitivity, and frequency |
| An event is listed but its video is unavailable | Wi-Fi signal, VPN, plan status, recording age | Check Device Health, disable the VPN, confirm compatible coverage, and compare the event date with the retention period |
| History is blank, slow, or the app closes | App version, phone restart, operating-system support, VPN | Update or reinstall the app, restart the device, disable VPN apps, or use Ring.com |
| Times look wrong while traveling | Current local time zone | Interpret the timestamp in the time zone where the phone or tablet is currently being used |
When no event appears in history
1. Verify the device, location, and filters
Start with the individual device path: Dashboard menu > Devices > [doorbell or camera] > Event History. Confirm that you selected the correct device and location. In the all-device History view, remove device and event-type filters temporarily. A filter can hide an event without indicating a recording failure.

Ring says recorded-video review on doorbells and cameras requires a compatible Ring subscription. Only events that occur after the subscription begins are recorded. Starting a subscription now does not create or recover recordings from before the start date.

- Powerful protection for any property* — 1080p HD security camera for your home or business with motion-activated LED floodlights, 105dB security siren.
- Real-time alerts* — Get motion-activated notification when anyone steps in view of your camera.
- Customizable Motion Zones* — Fine-tune which areas you want to focus on in the Ring app.
- Light up large outdoor areas* — 2000 lumen motion-activated floodlights give unwanted visitors nowhere to hide.
- Sound the siren with a tap* — Activate the 85dB siren from the Ring app to send unwanted visitors running.
This distinction explains many apparently missing events: a device can still provide live video and respond to alerts without having a recorded clip available for later review.
3. Review motion settings
If the device was covered at the time but expected motion events are absent, review its motion settings. Ring specifically points to motion zones, sensitivity, and frequency as settings that can affect which events are recorded. A zone that excludes the relevant area, sensitivity that is too low, or event frequency settings that limit detections can prevent an expected entry from appearing.
4. Account for time-zone changes
When you travel, Ring displays history in the current local time zone. Search around the converted time rather than relying on the clock time you remember from home. This is a display adjustment, not evidence that the event was deleted.
When an event is listed but the video will not play
A listed event means the history entry is present, but Ring may be unable to retrieve its video or the video may no longer be available. Work through these checks in order.

1. Check Device Health
- Open the Ring app and select the affected device.
- Open the Device Health tile.
- Check whether the device is online and review its Wi-Fi signal strength.
A weak signal can interrupt uploads or make playback retrieval fail. If the device is offline, use the Device Health or device-settings flow to reconnect it or change its Wi-Fi network.
2. Turn off VPN on the phone or tablet
Ring lists a VPN on the mobile device as a possible cause of an unavailable recording. Disable the VPN temporarily and retry the same event. If playback works afterward, the VPN connection was interfering with access rather than the camera necessarily losing the recording.
3. Confirm an active compatible plan
Check that a compatible Ring plan is active for the relevant device or location. Ring says access to recorded videos ends when a plan ends. Live video and responding to alerts can remain available without a subscription, but those capabilities do not provide retrospective recorded-video playback.
4. Compare the event date with storage limits
Ring’s official help describes cloud motion-event storage of up to 180 days as of 2026. The actual duration can vary by plan or storage setting. If the event is older than the applicable retention period, Ring says it cannot be recovered.

- Versatile mounting options – Find the perfect angle on a table, or mount up high with the flexible swivel mount. Indoor Cam is plug-in, making it easy to move where you need it.
Changing the storage duration affects future recordings, not recordings that have already aged out. A history entry can therefore remain visible after the associated video is no longer viewable.
5. Improve connectivity only when Device Health points to a signal problem
Ring recommends improving Wi-Fi signal for devices that repeatedly disconnect. Chime Pro is one possible way to boost signal, but it is conditional equipment guidance: it cannot restore a clip that was never recorded, a pre-subscription event, or a recording that has expired.
Subscription and retention rules that determine whether recovery is possible
| Situation | What Ring’s rules mean |
|---|---|
| No compatible plan when the event occurred | The later subscription start does not recover that earlier event |
| Plan is active and event is within its storage period | The recording should remain eligible for review, subject to device connectivity and app access |
| Event is older than the applicable storage period | Ring says the recording cannot be recovered |
| Storage duration is changed today | The change applies to future recordings, not past recordings |
| Plan ends | Access to recorded videos ends; download wanted clips before the plan ends |
The “up to 180 days” figure is a maximum description, not a promise that every account retains every event for the full period. Check the storage setting and plan that apply to the specific device.
Fix a history screen that is blank, slow, or unstable
If the problem affects the history interface itself rather than one recording, use Ring’s app troubleshooting sequence.

- Turn off VPN apps and try again.
- If the problem continues, uninstall and reinstall the Ring app.
Reinstalling requires you to sign in again, so make sure you can access the Ring account before removing the app.
Check mobile operating-system support
Ring states that its current app requires iOS 17 or higher or Android 9 or higher. A phone or tablet running an older operating system may block access or cause individual features to malfunction. Updating the operating system, when the device supports it, is part of the compatibility check; otherwise, use Ring.com in a supported browser.
Use Ring.com when the computer or app is the problem
If you are trying to use the old desktop app, switch to Ring.com. Sign in through Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, or Opera and open History from the dashboard. This separates an account or recording problem from a local mobile-app problem. If the same event is unavailable in both the app and browser, return to plan status, retention age, and Device Health rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.

What you can and cannot recover
Usually recoverable after troubleshooting
- A history entry hidden by the wrong device, location, or event-type filter.
- A recording that is within the applicable storage period but fails to load because of weak Wi-Fi or a VPN.
- History that becomes accessible after updating, restarting, or reinstalling the app.
- Events that looked missing only because their timestamps were converted to the current time zone.
Not recoverable under Ring’s stated rules
- An event that occurred before compatible subscription coverage began.
- A recording older than the applicable storage period.
- Recorded video after the plan has ended, unless it was downloaded before the end date.
- An event the device never recorded because motion settings excluded it or the device lacked the required recording coverage.
No Wi-Fi accessory or app reinstall can recreate one of these clips. Those steps address connectivity and access, not recording eligibility.
A practical order for diagnosing Ring Event History
- Open the individual device’s Event History and confirm the location.
- Clear filters, then check the all-device History view if needed.
- Check whether the event time is being displayed in a travel time zone.
- Decide whether the event is absent entirely or listed with unavailable video.
- For an absent event, verify subscription timing and motion zones, sensitivity, and frequency.
- For unavailable video, check Device Health, disable VPN, verify plan status, and compare the event age with retention.
- For a blank or unstable interface, update the app, restart the phone, verify iOS 17 or Android 9 support, and reinstall if necessary.
- Use Ring.com in a supported browser when the desktop or mobile app is the limiting factor.
- Consider Chime Pro only after Device Health confirms a recurring weak-signal problem.
This sequence prevents spending money on hardware or a subscription for a clip that Ring’s rules say was never recorded or has already expired.
