Not as a smart doorbell. Ring says its products require home Wi-Fi for setup and use. If a Ring device goes offline, live video, alerts and event recording are unavailable. Whether an existing indoor chime still sounds during a Wi-Fi outage depends on the doorbell model, chime compatibility, wiring and setup; Ring’s general guidance does not guarantee that behavior for every installation.
What stops working when Ring loses Wi-Fi?
Ring’s general product information says a home Wi-Fi network, a mobile device and the Ring app are required for setup and use. Ring’s offline-device guidance is specific about what happens after disconnection: you cannot view live video, receive alerts or record events around the home.

That applies whether the outage is a lost internet connection or the doorbell’s Wi-Fi connection. A doorbell can have electrical power and still be offline as a smart device.
Will the indoor doorbell chime still ring?
There is no universal answer for every Ring installation. A hardwired Ring doorbell may be connected to a compatible mechanical or digital in-home chime, but the reviewed Ring guidance does not promise that every such chime will sound during a Wi-Fi outage. Behavior depends on the model, the chime and how the doorbell is wired and configured.

Ring’s in-home chime instructions and compatibility list show that support is model-specific. Some devices, including Video Doorbell Wired and Peephole Cam, do not support an in-home chime kit. Check your exact product name in the Ring app and consult its compatibility guidance; do not assume that a chime connection works offline.
Power, wiring and Wi-Fi are separate
Battery power, hardwiring and a plug-in adapter address how a doorbell gets electricity. They do not replace Wi-Fi or restore connected features. Ring says battery-powered doorbells can be wired to some internal chimes, and hardwiring a battery model can provide trickle charging. Neither fact establishes that all models ring locally without a network connection.

Ring’s hardwiring guide covers connection to an existing chime, wiring directly to a transformer or bypassing the in-home chime, and using a plug-in adapter. The correct setup depends on the device and existing hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
- Battery-powered: The battery supplies power; Wi-Fi is still required for smart functions.
- Hardwired: The wiring supplies power or trickle charging, depending on the model and setup; it does not make connected features work offline.
- Plug-in adapter: Provides power where supported; it does not provide a network connection.
Do not change transformer wiring or chime connections based on a general guide alone. Ring warns that an incorrect transformer or chime power rating can damage a device or prevent proper chime operation. Follow the model-specific power instructions, turn off power at the breaker before electrical work, and observe local electrical requirements.

Does Ring Chime work without Wi-Fi?
Ring Chime and Chime Pro provide indoor alerts for connected Ring devices; they are not an outage backup. They depend on the Ring device being connected. Chime Pro may help when the issue is weak Wi-Fi coverage, but it cannot restore service during an internet outage. Ring also lists a connected Amazon Alexa Echo as an alert option in its chime configuration guidance.

First distinguish a weak signal from a complete internet or Wi-Fi outage. Ring’s offline troubleshooting steps address connectivity problems, not loss of internet service.

- Check the device’s power and battery status.
- In the Ring app, open the doorbell’s Device Health settings and reconnect it or update its network connection.
- If the connection is weak, move the doorbell closer to the router where practical, or improve coverage. Ring identifies Chime Pro as one option for boosting signal.
- If an indoor chime is the concern, verify your exact model’s compatibility and installation instructions rather than changing wiring to address a network outage.
These steps and the unavailable offline functions are described in Ring’s offline-device support article. A coverage improvement can help with recurring disconnections caused by weak signal; it cannot make Ring’s smart features independent of Wi-Fi.
