Ring’s Unusual Event Alert (beta) learns the usual activity around an individual camera and notifies you when something may be out of the ordinary. To use it, you need an eligible Ring subscription and Video Descriptions enabled; access also depends on your device, language, region, and rollout status.

What Ring Unusual Event Alert does

Unlike an alert that fires for every detected motion, Unusual Event Alert uses Ring Video Descriptions to learn everyday patterns for a camera and flag activity that appears atypical. “Unusual” is therefore specific to the activity that camera has observed at your property—not a universal category shared by every Ring user. Ring’s example is coyotes appearing in a yard where that is not part of the camera’s normal pattern.

The feature is in beta. Ring describes it as a way to reduce notification fatigue, but has not published a numeric accuracy rate, false-positive rate, or measured notification-reduction figure in the cited material. It should be treated as a filtering aid, not a guarantee that every unusual event will be detected or every ordinary event suppressed. Ring’s CES announcement describes how it is intended to work.

What you need before enabling it

  • An eligible Ring subscription: Ring identifies Unusual Event Alert as a subscription feature. Basic live view and real-time notifications may be available without a plan, but advanced recording and intelligent features require subscription coverage. Check Ring’s plan information and your account’s eligibility; plan details can vary by region.
  • Video Descriptions turned on: Unusual Event Alert learns from these descriptions. If they are disabled, the feature cannot build its routine baseline.
  • A supported camera or doorbell, mobile device, and language: Ring limits availability to supported devices and select primary languages. Eligibility can depend on the specific camera and account.
  • Availability in your region: Ring says the feature is unavailable to customers in Illinois because of state-specific legislation. Beta rollout and other device limitations may also affect access.

Check the Ring app and current support guidance rather than assuming a particular camera, plan, or country is eligible. Ring’s feature guidance covers Video Descriptions and the beta alerts.

How to turn on Unusual Event Alert

  1. Open the Ring app and go to the main dashboard.
  2. Tap the menu icon (☰), then choose Pro Features.
  3. Review and consent to the feature terms if prompted.
  4. Turn on the intelligent feature. Ring allows eligible features to be enabled globally or managed for individual cameras and doorbells through Manage Devices.

Ring may change app labels or navigation as it updates the app. If the setting is missing, first check subscription eligibility, Video Descriptions, device and language support, and regional availability.

Why the app says it is learning

The alert needs to observe routine activity and establish a baseline before it can judge what may be unusual. A learning message means that process is still underway; it is not evidence that the camera has already learned a reliable pattern. Ring notes that the number of events and other device limitations can affect availability or behavior, so the time needed may vary. The cited Ring documentation does not promise a fixed learning period.

How it differs from other Ring alerts

Feature What it does How it differs
Unusual Event Alert (beta) Learns the routine for a camera and alerts when activity may be out of the ordinary. Looks for deviation from a camera’s observed pattern.
Single Event Alert (beta) Combines similar alerts from the same camera. Groups duplicates; it does not serve the same baseline-learning purpose.
Smart Alerts Classifies motion, such as people, vehicles, packages, or other motion, so users can choose which alerts or recordings they want. Classifies detected activity rather than deciding whether it is unusual for that camera.
Person Detection Identifies people; Ring says it is available for all cameras and doorbells. Targets a particular type of motion, not unusualness.
Package Alerts Detects packages on supported doorbells. Ring says supported doorbells exclude Peephole Cam and Peephole Cam 2K; medium-to-large boxes are detected more reliably than envelopes, tubes, small boxes, or food deliveries.

Availability and controls vary by feature and device. See Ring’s intelligent-features guidance and Smart Alerts setup information for current details.

Choosing a Ring camera or doorbell for these alerts

A compatible Ring Video Doorbell can be a fit if you want Ring’s intelligent alert features, but compatibility is model-specific and can change. Confirm that the exact model appears in Ring’s current compatibility information and that your plan and account support Unusual Event Alert before buying. Do not assume that a feature available on one Ring camera will also be available on another.
