RimWorld on Waylith Engine vs Unity: What Changes for Players and Modders?

RimWorld 1.7 is the engine-transition update. Ludeon Studios is moving the game from Unity to its own Waylith Engine, but says the change is intended to be invisible during normal play: the game should look and play the same. The practical differences are reported performance gains, cross-version save support, a mostly unchanged mod ecosystem, and new options for mod authors.

There are important limits to that announcement. The reported speedups come from Ludeon’s internal tests rather than independent benchmarks, no detailed hardware requirements have been published, and 1.7 was still on Steam’s unstable beta branch on October 12, 2026. The main branch remained on 1.6, and Ludeon did not announce a stable-release date.

What changed in RimWorld 1.7?

Update 1.7 is the version that replaces Unity with Waylith, an in-house engine built by Ludeon Studios. Tia Young’s October 12, 2026 announcement describes Waylith as the technology underneath the existing RimWorld experience, not as a new game mode, visual overhaul, or rules change.

Ludeon’s stated goal is continuity. Its announcement says, “The game looks and plays exactly the same,” while the engine change improves the underlying work involved in starting the game, loading heavily modded colonies, generating maps and worlds, and processing simulation ticks. In other words, the headline change is technical rather than cosmetic.

The announcement does not document Waylith’s architecture, rendering pipeline, threading model, file formats, or replacement APIs. Those details should not be inferred from the name of the engine or from the performance claims. What is established is the switch itself and the compatibility behavior Ludeon says it has preserved.

Does 1.7 change RimWorld’s graphics or gameplay?

According to Ludeon, no intentional player-facing redesign accompanies the engine move. The studio says the game looks and plays exactly the same. That means a colony, storyteller, faction system, interface, and modded scenario should not be treated as new content merely because the technology below them changed.

This is a developer statement, not an independent visual or gameplay assessment. Small differences can still appear in an unstable build because 1.7 was being tested before its main-branch release. If you notice a changed animation, timing issue, display artifact, or simulation behavior, record the circumstances and report it through the development Discord rather than assuming it is an intended redesign.

How much faster is Waylith?

Ludeon reports that 1.7 is faster than 1.6 in several parts of the game: startup, loading games with large mod lists, map generation, world generation, and general ticks per second. The studio summarizes its internal results as a 2–4× performance improvement, but explicitly warns that individual results depend on a player’s computer and installed mods.

Scenario Ludeon’s reported result How to interpret it
Overall test summary 2–4× performance improvement Developer-reported internal results; not a guarantee for every PC or mod list.
Late-game colony example 2.2× better performance One named internal test case, not a universal benchmark.
Very large mod pack loading 1,500-mod pack fell from 14 minutes to 6 minutes One Ludeon test configuration; loading time varies with hardware, storage, and mod content.
Other reported areas Faster startup, map generation, world generation, and general ticks per second The announcement does not provide a separate percentage or timing for each area.

The 1,500-mod example is the clearest illustration of what Ludeon is targeting: the wait before a heavily customized game becomes playable. It should not be read as a promise that every player will save eight minutes. A smaller mod list, a different processor, slower storage, or a mod with unusual initialization work can produce a different result.

What the performance claims mean for ordinary players

  • Startup: the game may reach its main menu sooner, but the announcement gives no separate startup measurement.
  • Mod-heavy loading: players with very large lists are the most likely to notice a shorter load, because this is where Ludeon supplied a concrete example.
  • Generation: creating a map or world is listed among the faster operations, with no published timing for a standard-size map.
  • Late-game simulation: higher ticks per second can make a crowded colony feel more responsive, although the 2.2× figure applies to one Ludeon test.

Because no independent benchmark is cited, comparisons between specific CPUs, graphics cards, operating systems, or storage devices remain unestablished. The responsible conclusion is that Waylith has shown promising results in Ludeon’s testing, not that every system will double its frame rate or simulation speed.

Will your old RimWorld save work in 1.7?

Ludeon says a 1.6 savegame loads on 1.7 and that a save made in 1.7 also works if you return to 1.6. This is intended as two-way save compatibility, so switching branches does not require a special conversion procedure according to the announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That statement describes the announced version behavior, not a guarantee that every combination of save, mod, and external tool will be trouble-free. A save can depend on a mod’s data, a custom scenario, or a temporary branch-specific bug. Treat the compatibility claim as permission to test the transition, while keeping an untouched copy of an important colony before experimenting with an unstable build.

A cautious way to test a branch switch

  1. Finish or pause the colony and create a new in-game save with a distinctive name.
  2. Keep a separate backup of that save before changing the game branch or updating a large mod list.
  3. Switch to the desired Steam branch and allow RimWorld to update.
  4. Load the test copy first. Check the map, colonists, animals, inventory, bills, work priorities, quests, and any mod-added systems you rely on.
  5. Save under a second name only after the colony behaves normally. Keep the original copy until you are satisfied that returning to the other branch is safe.

The backup step is general good practice for an unstable test; it is not a special file conversion required by Waylith. Ludeon’s announcement does not describe a new save format or explain the engineering method used to retain compatibility.

Do RimWorld mods need to be updated for Waylith?

Ludeon says the vast majority of mods work on 1.7 without changes from their authors. A mod can nevertheless display a yellow “potentially unsupported” label after the version number changes. The studio says that warning alone does not mean the mod is broken; it can simply indicate that the author has not yet marked the mod as compatible with 1.7.

Compatibility is therefore a two-part issue: whether the mod actually runs, and whether its metadata has been updated so Steam or the game no longer presents the warning. The announcement does not claim that every mod has been individually tested, so players should still watch for errors, missing content, or behavior that differs from 1.6.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What players should do when a mod is marked potentially unsupported

  • Read the mod’s current description and change notes for a 1.7 compatibility statement.
  • Load a disposable test save before opening your main colony.
  • Check the log or in-game error display if content disappears or a feature stops working.
  • Disable only the suspect mod, then reproduce the problem to determine whether the warning corresponds to an actual failure.
  • Report a reproducible 1.7 issue to the mod author with the game version, mod version, load order, and the action that triggered it.

Do not remove a library or content mod from an existing colony casually. Even when the engine itself supports the save, deleting a mod can remove definitions that the save expects. The safe response to a warning is controlled testing, not automatic deletion.

What mod authors are being asked to do

Ludeon’s guidance is that authors should test their work on 1.7 and publish a version marked 1.7-compatible so the warning disappears for players. If an author finds behavior that differs from 1.6, the studio directs them to the official development Discord.

This is compatibility guidance, not a promise that every mod will function unchanged. A mod that depends on undocumented Unity behavior, timing, or a third-party library could still need attention even if most mods do not. The announcement supplies no exhaustive migration checklist or API-difference table.

What does Waylith offer modders?

The announcement describes three broad opportunities rather than a technical specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current C# language features

Ludeon says mod authors can use the latest C# language features. That can make modern language constructs available when writing or maintaining a mod, but the announcement does not list a supported compiler version, target framework, runtime restrictions, or a complete example. Authors should verify the exact toolchain and deployment rules in the documentation available for the 1.7 development environment.

More complex mods without a performance penalty from the engine

Ludeon says Waylith makes complex mods easier to write without negatively affecting game performance. This is a statement about the engine’s intended support for mod complexity, not a guarantee that any particular algorithm will be efficient. Poorly designed pathfinding, excessive polling, large allocations, or expensive world scans can still create a bottleneck. The practical benefit is greater headroom and more modern language support, not permission to ignore profiling.

Large visual changes and custom effects

The studio also says large visual changes and complex custom effects are more accessible. That suggests a broader creative ceiling for mod authors who want to alter presentation, but no rendering API, shader model, asset pipeline, or compatibility contract is included in the announcement. Modders should wait for the relevant technical documentation rather than assuming that a Unity-specific technique maps directly to Waylith.

Will older PCs run RimWorld 1.7?

Ludeon warns that computers more than 10 years old may not run 1.7 and asks affected players to report problems through the development Discord. This is an age-based caution, not a published minimum requirement. The studio does not identify a required processor generation, graphics feature, memory amount, storage type, operating system, or upgrade target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not convert the warning into a universal rule such as “all ten-year-old PCs fail” or “a new graphics card is required.” Age is only a rough proxy for many different configurations. A relatively old computer with suitable capabilities might work, while a newer low-power system could still encounter a problem.

How to test an older system responsibly

  1. Stay on the 1.6 main branch if the computer is used for an important long-running colony and you do not want unstable-build risk.
  2. If you test 1.7, use a copied save and a reduced mod list first.
  3. Observe startup, map generation, loading time, simulation responsiveness, display output, and whether the game closes unexpectedly.
  4. Record the operating system and hardware details, the exact 1.7 build, and the steps that reproduce a failure.
  5. Send that information through the development Discord, as Ludeon requests for systems that may not run the update.

Until Ludeon publishes detailed requirements, there is no evidence-based component upgrade recommendation. Players should not buy hardware solely from the age warning.

How to access RimWorld 1.7 on Steam

At the time of the October 12, 2026 announcement, 1.7 was available through Steam’s unstable beta branch and the main branch was still on 1.6. Steam labels and branch availability can change, so check the current state before following these steps.

  1. Open your Steam library and select RimWorld.
  2. Open the game’s Properties.
  3. Go to Betas.
  4. Choose the available 1.7 unstable beta option from the branch selector.
  5. Close the properties window and let Steam download the branch files.
  6. Confirm the game’s displayed version before loading a save.

If the 1.7 option is no longer listed, or if the main branch has moved forward, use the branch labels currently shown by Steam rather than relying on this historical arrangement. Ludeon had not announced when 1.7 would leave the unstable branch, so there is no stable date to plan around.

Waylith versus Unity: the player-facing comparison

Concern RimWorld 1.6 on Unity RimWorld 1.7 on Waylith
Engine ownership Uses Unity. Uses Waylith, Ludeon’s in-house engine.
Visual and gameplay intent Existing experience. Ludeon says it looks and plays exactly the same.
Startup and loading Baseline for Ludeon’s comparison. Reported faster, including a 14-minute-to-6-minute result for one 1,500-mod test pack.
Map and world generation Baseline for Ludeon’s comparison. Reported faster; a separate timing was not stated.
Simulation ticks Baseline for Ludeon’s comparison. Reported faster, with a 2.2× result in one late-game colony test.
Save direction Can load 1.6 saves. Ludeon says it loads 1.6 saves and that 1.7 saves work when returning to 1.6.
Mods Existing 1.6 compatibility status. The vast majority are expected to work without author changes; a yellow warning may appear until metadata is marked compatible.
Release channel on October 12, 2026 Main branch. Unstable beta branch.
System requirements Existing requirements. No detailed requirements stated; Ludeon warns that PCs more than 10 years old may not run it.

The table separates announced behavior from measured examples. The 1.7 figures are not independent head-to-head tests performed across a standard set of machines, and the announcement does not provide a matching list of hardware or mod configurations for all scenarios.

What Ludeon has not explained yet

Several questions remain open because the announcement does not answer them:

  • How Waylith is structured internally or which Unity subsystems it replaces.
  • How save and mod compatibility was implemented.
  • Whether every platform supported by RimWorld has identical 1.7 availability or requirements.
  • Minimum and recommended specifications, including processor, graphics, memory, and operating-system details.
  • Independent benchmarks that reproduce the 2–4× summary or compare a broad range of machines.
  • A firm date for moving 1.7 from the unstable branch to the main branch.
  • A complete mod API or migration guide documenting every behavior that differs from 1.6.

Those are genuine unknowns, not evidence that the transition will fail. They simply mark the boundary of what the October announcement establishes. Avoid filling the gaps with assumptions about engine architecture or guarantees for individual mods.

Should you switch to 1.7 now?

Use the unstable branch if you want to test

Switching makes sense for players who want to measure loading or late-game responsiveness on their own computer, help identify compatibility problems, or prepare a mod before the main release. Use a copied save, expect that branch behavior can change, and report reproducible failures through the channels Ludeon identifies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stay on 1.6 if reliability matters more

The 1.6 main branch is the conservative choice while 1.7 remains unstable. This is especially sensible for a heavily modded colony that you cannot easily reproduce, a computer close to the age range mentioned by Ludeon, or a play session where an unexpected branch issue would be costly.

For mod authors

Test the mod on 1.7, check the features that touch saves, maps, generation, rendering, and performance, then mark the release 1.7-compatible when the results are satisfactory. If behavior differs from 1.6, document the reproduction and use the development Discord rather than relying on the warning label as a diagnosis.

Bottom line for players and modders

RimWorld 1.7 changes the engine beneath the game, not the game’s stated visual or gameplay identity. Ludeon reports faster startup, loading, generation, and simulation, including a 2–4× internal-test summary and specific examples, but your result will depend on your PC and mods. The studio says saves work in both directions and that most mods need no code changes, while still asking authors to test and mark compatibility. Older computers may have trouble, detailed requirements are not available, and the stable release date was not announced. Treat 1.7 as a promising compatibility-focused beta transition: test it deliberately, keep a fallback save, and distinguish Ludeon’s claims from results you measure on your own system.
