Ricoh’s role is the deployment and support layer, not the manufacture of the food-preparation robot. Through RICOH Service Advantage, Ricoh USA is positioned to coordinate installations, train restaurant teams and provide continuing field service as Hyphen places systems in more U.S. locations.

The companies announced the relationship on October 15, 2026. It formalizes a field-service arrangement Hyphen had already disclosed on August 13, 2025, when it selected Ricoh USA for reliable nationwide installations and ongoing support.
Why service coverage is important
Restaurant automation can work in a demonstration or a single location yet still struggle to expand across a chain. Each site requires equipment delivery, installation in an existing kitchen, staff training, software and recipe setup, maintenance and a process for resolving failures. Hyphen’s announcement describes that deployment and support work as a constraint on the wider industry. Ricoh is intended to provide a repeatable service backbone while Hyphen expands its restaurant accounts.

How the Hyphen Automated Makeline works
The Automated Makeline is designed for orders arriving through digital drive-thru systems, online ordering and self-service kiosks. It assembles rice and salad bowls under the counter. Team members can therefore continue serving in-house customers from the top of the counter while the automated equipment handles the bowl-building task below.
Workflow at a glance
- A customer places a qualifying rice- or salad-bowl order through a drive-thru, online or kiosk channel.
- The order is sent to the makeline’s preparation process.
- The equipment assembles the bowl beneath the counter according to the order.
- Restaurant employees continue front-of-house service and handle the remaining parts of the operation.
The releases do not publish throughput measurements, accuracy rates, menu limitations, kitchen dimensions or labor-saving results for this arrangement. Those details can vary with recipes, order volume, restaurant layout and integration choices.

Who is behind the technology
Hyphen is the foodservice-automation company supplying the Automated Makeline. The October 2026 announcement says the technology is backed by Chipotle and Cava. Ricoh USA supplies the field deployment and lifecycle-management capability around it.
Hyphen’s 2025 Series B financing totaled $25 million. The same company release cited Ricoh’s field-service network as having more than 15,000 certified technicians. That figure describes the network referenced by Hyphen; it is not a published count of technicians assigned to Makeline installations.

Can Ricoh help restaurant robotics scale chainwide?
Ricoh can address several practical scaling requirements: consistent installation procedures, training resources, a nationwide service footprint and post-installation support. Those capabilities may reduce the operational burden of deploying the same equipment across many restaurants.
They do not, by themselves, establish that a chainwide rollout will be economical or technically successful. Restaurant operators still need to validate order-system integration, available under-counter space, food-safety procedures, menu and recipe compatibility, expected volume, maintenance response times and total cost of ownership at their own sites.

In practical terms, Ricoh’s announcement is about making deployment support repeatable. The equipment’s restaurant-level value still depends on each operator’s workflow, integration and financial assessment.
