No—putting a wet phone in rice is not a reliable fix. Apple warns that rice particles could damage an iPhone. Instead, disconnect cables and accessories, switch the phone off if you can, gently dry the outside, and keep it unplugged until you have followed the instructions for its exact model. If it was immersed, exposed to salt water or another liquid, or is malfunctioning, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
What to do if your phone gets wet
- Disconnect it. Unplug any cable and remove accessories. Do not charge the phone while its connector is wet; moisture can corrode connector pins and cause permanent damage or connection problems, according to Apple Support and Samsung Support.
- Turn it off if possible. This is especially important for a phone that is not water-resistant. Samsung advises owners of non-water-resistant Galaxy devices to turn them off and have them inspected after water exposure.
- Dry the exterior. Use a clean, soft cloth to wipe away water. Follow the maker’s instructions for your model and exposure; do not assume a universal drying time.
- Let the connector dry as the manufacturer directs. Do not insert objects into the port or use heat or compressed air. Samsung warns these can cause damage. Apple says cool airflow directed at an iPhone connector may help, while Google advises letting a wet Pixel dry at room temperature.
- Get service when the exposure or symptoms call for it. Arrange inspection after immersion or exposure to salt water, pool water, drinks, or another liquid. Also seek help for persistent charging warnings or other malfunctions, even if the phone appears dry.
Instructions differ by phone and by the liquid involved. Check the support guidance for your exact model before rinsing a device or taking any step beyond gentle exterior drying.
Does putting a wet phone in rice work?
Rice is not a proven way to recover a wet phone. Apple Support explicitly warns against putting an iPhone in a bag of rice: “Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone.” That warning is specific to iPhones; it does not establish a success rate for rice or prove that it can restore water-damaged electronics. The safer course is to follow your phone maker’s drying and service instructions.
Silica gel absorbs moisture, but it is not established here as a manufacturer-approved recovery method. If you have packets on hand, treat them as optional—not a substitute for the device’s instructions or professional inspection.

What changes the right response
Water in the charging port, but no immersion
Keep the cable disconnected and let the port dry according to the manufacturer’s guidance. If an iPhone displays a liquid-detection alert, follow Apple’s liquid-detection instructions. Do not treat any emergency charging override as ordinary advice for a wet connector.
Fresh water versus salt water or other liquids
Salt water, pool water, drinks, and other liquids can require different handling from fresh water, and the correct steps vary by model. Samsung provides conditional rinse guidance for some water-resistant Galaxy devices, but that does not apply to every Galaxy and should not be generalized to iPhones or Pixels. Consult your exact model’s official instructions before rinsing anything, and arrange service promptly after immersion or contaminated-liquid exposure.

Water-resistant versus non-water-resistant phones
Water resistance is limited and depends on the model and conditions. It is not a guarantee against damage after immersion. Samsung notes that internal damage or corrosion may develop even when a device seems to work normally. Google directs owners to repair a water-damaged Pixel. What not to do
- Do not put the phone in rice as a recovery method.
- Do not charge it through a wet connector or reconnect a cable just to check whether it works.
- Do not use heat or compressed air to speed drying.
- Do not assume that a water-resistance rating makes the phone waterproof or that normal operation rules out hidden damage.
- Do not apply another model’s or manufacturer’s liquid-handling instructions to your device without checking its official guidance.
