Revolut is built around mobile payments, budgeting, currency exchange, and transfers; Chase emphasizes branches, cash and check deposits, and a large U.S. ATM network.
They are not interchangeable products. Revolut’s U.S. balances can be held through different partner banks depending on the account feature, while Chase holds eligible checking deposits at Chase Bank. Deposit insurance, debit-card safeguards, and purchase or travel benefits therefore follow different rules. The comparison below uses provider information available October 13, 2026; fees and terms can change.

The products being compared
Revolut Standard and Chase Total Checking solve different banking problems. Revolut’s U.S. materials describe a prepaid-card program and services provided through partner banks. The account is managed in the Revolut app, and the Standard tier has no recurring subscription fee. Chase Total Checking is a deposit account at a traditional bank. It supports a debit card, branches, ATMs, mobile deposits, and other checking-account functions.
A Chase checking account is not a Chase credit card. Credit-card rewards, rental-car coverage, trip protection, purchase protection, and extended-warranty benefits belong to individual credit-card products, not automatically to Total Checking. When a comparison refers to “Chase card benefits,” the exact card and its Guide to Benefits must be identified.

Fees at a glance
| Cost or condition | Revolut Standard | Chase Total Checking |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring account fee | No Standard subscription fee, according to Revolut’s U.S. fee page, last updated April 30, 2026. | $15 monthly service fee, or $0 when a listed waiver condition is met. Chase’s account page was accessed in 2026 and shows no publication date. |
| How the monthly fee can be waived | Not applicable to the Standard subscription. | Chase lists at least one of these monthly conditions: $500 or more in qualifying electronic deposits; a $1,500 beginning-of-day balance; a $5,000 average beginning-of-day balance across qualifying deposits and investments; or linking an eligible checking account. |
| Out-of-network ATM withdrawals | Revolut may charge up to 2% of the withdrawal. The ATM operator or network may add another charge. Revolut says in-network withdrawals have no Revolut fee. | Fees depend on the ATM and account terms; the cited account page highlights access to Chase’s own network rather than promising that every outside ATM is free. |
| Domestic U.S. wire | $10 per inbound or outbound domestic wire under the cited fee schedule. | Not stated on the cited Total Checking page. |
| Card loading | Domestic debit-card loads may cost up to 1%; domestic credit-card loads up to 3%; international debit-card loads up to 3%. The app shows the applicable charge before completion. | Not described as a standard Total Checking funding fee on the cited page. |
| Physical card | The first Standard physical card may cost up to $4.99, with delivery potentially extra. The first virtual card has no issuance fee. | Debit-card issuance terms are not stated in the cited account-page material. |
| Overdraft information | Fees and behavior depend on the Revolut account and transaction type; check the in-app terms. | Chase describes Overdraft Assist: it does not charge an overdraft fee when the account is overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the business day, or when the balance is brought to that threshold by the next business day, subject to current terms. |
Calling either option simply “free” is misleading. Revolut removes a subscription charge but can charge for particular funding, ATM, wire, or card-delivery choices. Chase’s monthly charge disappears when the customer consistently meets an eligible condition.
How Revolut Standard charges work
No subscription does not mean no transaction costs
The Standard tier has no recurring subscription fee. The costs that matter most are activity-based: where you withdraw cash, how you add money, whether you send a domestic wire, and whether you order a physical card.
ATM withdrawals
Revolut says it does not charge for an in-network ATM withdrawal. For an out-of-network withdrawal, its fee page allows a charge of up to 2% of the amount. The ATM owner or network can impose a separate surcharge, so the amount displayed by Revolut may not be the complete cost. A person who regularly uses independent ATMs should check both the Revolut fee preview and the machine’s disclosure before confirming.

Loading by card is conditional rather than a universal account fee. A domestic debit-card load may incur as much as 1%, a domestic credit-card load as much as 3%, and an international debit-card load as much as 3%. Because the exact charge is shown in the app, review the confirmation screen instead of assuming that every load has the maximum rate.
Physical and virtual cards
The first Standard physical card may cost up to $4.99 and delivery can add to that amount. The first virtual card has no issuance fee. A reader who only needs a digital card can therefore avoid the physical-card charge, but a virtual card cannot solve a need for cash access or a physical card terminal that does not accept mobile wallets.
Features included in the app
Revolut’s U.S. account guide describes physical and virtual cards, real-time transaction notifications, budgeting tools, transfers to other Revolut customers, in-network ATM access, and currency exchange. These features are convenient for someone who wants immediate alerts and a consolidated view of spending rather than branch-based service.
The same guide describes additional features on paid plans, including higher out-of-network ATM limits, priority support, and Metal travel benefits. Those are not Standard benefits. The guide was marked accurate as of March 16, 2026, and its promotional features can change. Any savings yield shown in the app is variable and may change; it should not be treated as a fixed rate.

How Chase Total Checking charges work
The monthly fee and waiver paths
Chase lists a $15 monthly service fee for Total Checking. The fee is $0 for a month in which the account meets one of the qualifying conditions shown in the fee table: qualifying electronic deposits totaling at least $500, a $1,500 beginning-of-day balance, a $5,000 average beginning-of-day balance across qualifying deposits and investments, or a linked eligible checking account.
These are ongoing tests, not a one-time enrollment choice. A customer should inspect the statement or account-fee section each month, particularly after changing employers, moving direct deposit, transferring savings, or unlinking another checking account. The definition of a qualifying deposit and the treatment of linked accounts are governed by Chase’s current terms.
Overdraft assistance
Chase describes Overdraft Assist conditions under which it does not charge an overdraft fee when the account is overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the business day, or when the balance is restored to that threshold by the next business day. This is not a promise that every overdraft is free. Payment approval, timing, transaction type, and the latest account agreement still matter.

Branches, ATMs, and deposits
Chase advertises access to more than 14,000 ATMs and 5,000 branches. Those are Chase’s published network figures; the account page does not state a year for the count, and they are not an independent audit. For customers who need to deposit cash, speak with staff, obtain a cashier’s check, or use a full-service branch, this physical network is a material difference from an app-centered account.

| Send money | Transfers to other Revolut customers, domestic wires, and currency exchange are described; charges depend on the method. | Zelle and ordinary checking transfers are available subject to Chase terms; the cited page does not state a domestic-wire price. |
| Travel or foreign-currency use | Currency exchange is a stated feature; plan-specific limits and rates apply. | Foreign-exchange and travel features depend on the particular Chase product and account terms, not merely on having Total Checking. |
Deposit insurance: where the money sits matters
Chase deposits
Chase says eligible deposits at Chase Bank are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation up to $250,000 per depositor, per institution, for each ownership category. Its covered examples include checking, savings, money-market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit. Stocks, bonds, and mutual funds are not FDIC-insured deposits. The $250,000 limit applies by depositor, institution, and ownership category, so accounts with different legal ownership can be treated differently.
Revolut prepaid-card funds
Revolut says U.S. prepaid-card funds are held with Lead Bank, an FDIC member, and may be eligible for up to $250,000 of pass-through FDIC insurance when the card is registered and applicable requirements are met. That protection is tied to the balance type and the stated conditions; it is not a blanket guarantee for every balance shown in the Revolut app.

Revolut Savings Vaults
Revolut says Savings Vault funds are held with Cross River Bank and may be insured up to $250,000 if that bank fails. The partner institution is different from the one named for prepaid-card funds, so a reader must identify which Revolut feature holds the money rather than relying on the Revolut brand name alone.

What FDIC insurance does not cover
Revolut’s U.S. help documentation states: “FDIC insurance doesn’t cover losses from Revolut’s failure, theft, or fraud.” It also says safeguarding varies by the Revolut entity and account. Before relying on insurance, confirm the account type, registration status, partner bank, ownership category, and current disclosures. FDIC coverage protects eligible deposits when an insured bank fails; it is not a general promise against every operational, security, or provider-related loss.

Chase debit-card protection
Chase’s Total Checking page says: “With Zero Liability Protection, you’ll get reimbursed for unauthorized charges on your debit card when reported promptly.” The reporting qualifier is important. A cardholder should lock the card in the app when appropriate, monitor alerts, and report suspicious transactions as soon as they are noticed. The exact investigation and reimbursement process follows Chase’s current agreement.
Revolut plan benefits
Revolut’s U.S. insurance overview says Metal plans include eligible purchase protection for theft or damage for 90 days, a 90-day refund-protection window for eligible purchases, ticket protection, and certain travel coverage. These are paid-plan benefits, not Standard-account guarantees. Eligibility, exclusions, claim deadlines, covered purchases, and limits come from the plan’s policy wording.

Chase’s card-benefits FAQ says: “The specific array of benefits available varies by card.” Examples discussed by Chase include auto-rental coverage, trip cancellation or interruption insurance, purchase protection, and extended-warranty protection. Those benefits cannot be assigned to Total Checking simply because the checking customer also has a Chase-branded credit card. To compare them fairly with a Revolut plan, name the exact Chase credit card, verify that the purchase or trip was paid as required, and read that card’s Guide to Benefits for limits and exclusions.
Which account fits which use case?
Choose Revolut Standard when mobile-first control is the priority
- You want no recurring Standard subscription charge and are comfortable reviewing transaction fees individually.
- You prefer instant app notifications, spending categories, budgeting tools, and virtual-card access.
- You transfer money to other Revolut customers or use currency exchange often enough for in-app convenience to matter.
- You rarely need to deposit cash or checks at a branch.
- You can plan ATM withdrawals around the in-network network and avoid avoidable card-load charges.
Choose Chase Total Checking when physical banking is the priority
- You regularly handle cash or paper checks and want branch and ATM deposit options.
- You value a large published U.S. ATM and branch network.
- You can reliably meet one of the monthly-fee waiver conditions.
- You want established checking-account workflows, including mobile check deposit, Zelle, and debit-card controls.
- You need to resolve an issue in person rather than only through an app or remote support.
Use a two-account setup only for a clear reason
Some consumers may keep one account for branch deposits and another for travel or budgeting. That can diversify access, but it also creates more statements, transfer timing to monitor, identity checks, and opportunities for an overdraft or fee if balances are not tracked. If you combine accounts, document which institution holds each balance and which account pays recurring bills.
How to compare your own likely cost
- List your normal monthly activities: ATM withdrawals, cash deposits, paper checks, card loads, domestic wires, foreign-currency exchanges, and physical-card orders.
- For Revolut, use the in-app quote for each funding or transfer action and add any ATM-operator charge that the machine displays.
- For Chase, determine whether your actual deposit, balance, investment, or linked-account pattern satisfies a waiver condition every month.
- Separate recurring fees from occasional costs. A no-subscription account can be more expensive for a heavy ATM or wire user, while a fee-based checking account can cost nothing when its waiver condition is stable.
- Check where each balance is legally held and whether the balance is an eligible deposit, rather than treating app branding as the protection.
- Read the exact plan or card agreement before relying on insurance, purchase protection, travel coverage, overdraft treatment, or unauthorized-transaction reimbursement.
Questions to verify before opening or moving money
- Which Revolut entity and partner bank hold the specific balance I intend to keep?
- Is my prepaid card registered in the way required for any applicable FDIC pass-through coverage?
- Which Chase deposits count as qualifying electronic deposits for the monthly waiver?
- What happens if a direct deposit arrives late or a balance falls below the beginning-of-day requirement?
- Will I use an ATM outside the account’s preferred network, and what operator fee will appear?
- Do I need cash deposits, check deposits, a cashier’s check, or in-person service?
- Am I evaluating a checking account, a debit card, or a separate credit card with its own Guide to Benefits?
- Have the provider’s fee schedule and disclosures changed since the October 13, 2026 information date used here?
Bottom line
Revolut Standard is the more app-centered option: no subscription fee, virtual and physical cards, budgeting and currency tools, and transfers inside the Revolut ecosystem, with conditional charges for some ATM, wire, loading, and card-delivery choices. Chase Total Checking is the more traditional option: a potentially waivable monthly fee, broad branch and ATM access, and straightforward cash and check deposit support.
The protection question is not settled by the brand name. Chase eligible deposits are covered under Chase Bank’s FDIC structure. Revolut protection depends on the balance type, partner bank, registration, and applicable conditions, and Revolut expressly excludes losses from its failure, theft, or fraud from FDIC coverage. Credit-card travel and purchase protections must be evaluated separately by card. Choose based on your actual ATM, deposit, transfer, branch, and fee-waiver behavior—not on a blanket claim that either account is simply free or fully insured.
