There is no universal winner. In the United States, Revolut is primarily a choice between a free or paid plan with defined currency-exchange and ATM allowances, while American Express Gold and Platinum cards emphasize fee-free foreign purchases, Membership Rewards points and travel benefits. Revolut can suit travelers who need predictable exchange and cash-withdrawal limits; Amex can suit those who value points and card benefits and whose merchants accept American Express. Your country, exact product, spending pattern, cash needs, redemption preferences and acceptance requirements determine the better choice.
Scope: what this comparison does—and does not—cover
“Revolut” and “American Express” are families of products, not single cards with one global price list. This comparison uses official U.S. Revolut plan information and U.S. American Express Gold and Platinum information available in 2026. Revolut pricing, exchange rules, rewards and insurance differ by market, and American Express products and fees differ by issuing country. If your account is issued elsewhere, use the local terms rather than treating the U.S. figures below as universal.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The exact American Express card also matters. Gold and Platinum have different benefits, and a Platinum earning rule may apply only to a defined purchase category. A useful decision therefore starts with the product name and country shown in your application or account, not with the brand name alone.
Quick comparison
| Decision factor | Revolut (U.S. plans) | American Express (U.S. Gold and Platinum evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| Product structure | Standard, Premium and Metal plans; allowances and fees vary by plan. | Separate card products, including Gold and Platinum, with card-specific terms. |
| Published recurring price | Standard: $0/month; Premium: $9.99/month; Metal: $16.99/month on the U.S. plans page accessed in 2026. Prices can change. | The pages used here do not establish every annual fee for a reader’s exact card, offer or market. Check the current application and benefit terms. |
| Foreign purchases | Exchange allowances, timing rules and possible fees depend on plan and transaction conditions. The U.S. Metal fee schedule states no exchange-rate fee for Metal during or outside the stated market hours. | Gold and Platinum benefit pages state that American Express will not charge a foreign transaction fee on purchases made outside the United States. |
| Currency allowance shown | Premium: $1,000/month; Metal: $10,000/month on the surfaced U.S. plan page. Verify the live allowance and applicable account terms. | No comparable monthly currency-exchange allowance is presented in the cited card benefits. |
| ATM access | Up to $800 of out-of-network ATM withdrawals without a Revolut fee for the relevant U.S. plan allowance; a 2% Revolut ATM fee applies after that allowance. The ATM operator may add its own fee. | No directly comparable American Express cash-withdrawal terms were established in the material used for this comparison. Cash advances, if available, require checking the specific card agreement. |
| Rewards | Rewards are market-specific. U.K. RevPoints information cannot be assumed to describe a U.S. account. | Platinum terms describe one Membership Rewards point per dollar on eligible purchases plus four additional points for eligible travel purchases. The product page separately describes 5X points on eligible prepaid hotel bookings made through Amex Travel. |
| Travel benefits | The U.S. page advertises travel insurance on a paid plan and discounted lounge access, subject to plan and policy rules. | Platinum describes travel benefits and Premium Global Assist emergency assistance, subject to eligibility, exclusions and limits. |
| Acceptance | No authoritative comparative acceptance statistic is established here; acceptance depends on the card, network, merchant and country. | No authoritative comparative acceptance statistic is established here. What Revolut costs and provides in the U.S.
Plan prices are monthly, not one single card fee
The U.S. Revolut pricing page lists three plan levels: Standard at $0 per month, Premium at $9.99 per month and Metal at $16.99 per month. These are the figures shown when the page was accessed in 2026, not a guarantee of a future price. A paid plan is worthwhile only if the exchange allowance, ATM limit, insurance or other included benefits you will actually use exceed its recurring cost.

Do not compare a $9.99 or $16.99 monthly plan directly with an American Express annual fee without converting both to the same period and assigning a realistic value to benefits. Multiply the Revolut monthly charge by 12, then subtract only benefits you would otherwise buy or pay for. A headline benefit has no practical value if you never use it or cannot meet its eligibility conditions.
Currency exchange has plan, timing and fair-use conditions
Revolut’s exchange cost is not determined by the brand alone. Your plan, the amount exchanged, the currency, the time of the transaction and the account’s applicable fair-use or weekend rules can all matter. The U.S. plan page surfaced a $1,000 monthly exchange allowance for Premium and $10,000 for Metal. Treat those as plan-specific limits that must be rechecked before you travel.
The U.S. Metal fee schedule states that Metal has no exchange-rate fee during or outside the stated market hours. That statement does not establish identical treatment for Standard or Premium, nor does it eliminate the need to check the rate, currency pair and any fair-use threshold for a particular transaction. Exchange a small test amount before departure and inspect the confirmation so you know which rate and fee were applied.
Recommended Free Tools
When comparing with American Express, separate the exchange-rate question from the transaction-fee question. A card can have no issuer-imposed foreign-transaction fee while the network’s conversion rate and the merchant’s dynamic-currency-conversion choice still affect the final amount. When a terminal offers to bill you in U.S. dollars, compare that option with paying in the local currency; the merchant’s conversion markup may be different from the card network’s conversion.
ATM limits include two possible fees
The U.S. Revolut plan information allows up to $800 in out-of-network ATM withdrawals without a Revolut fee for the relevant plan allowance. After that allowance, a 2% Revolut ATM fee applies. The ATM owner can charge a separate surcharge at any point, so “fee-free” in the plan description does not guarantee a free cash withdrawal.
Estimate your cash requirement before choosing a plan. Add the withdrawals you expect to make, leave room for emergencies and check whether the allowance resets monthly according to the account’s local terms. At the ATM, decline conversion to your home currency when the operator’s screen offers it unless you have a specific reason to accept that rate; choose local-currency dispensing when appropriate and review the receipt.
Rewards and travel benefits are localized
Revolut rewards cannot be inferred from another country’s marketing. The U.K. plan page describes RevPoints, but that is evidence of localization, not proof that the same program, earning rate or redemption options apply to a U.S. account. Open the rewards section in your own app and read the eligible-transaction and redemption terms before assigning a cash value to points.

The U.S. page advertises travel insurance on a paid plan and discounted lounge access. Neither phrase alone tells you who is covered, whether the trip must be paid with the account, what maximums and exclusions apply, or whether lounge entry is complimentary or merely discounted. Read the insurance certificate and lounge conditions, including purchase, residency and trip-length requirements.
What American Express offers for overseas spending and rewards
Gold and Platinum state no American Express foreign-transaction fee
American Express’s U.S. Gold benefit page says: “American Express will not charge any foreign transaction fee on the purchases you make outside of the United States with your Card.” The U.S. Platinum benefit page makes the same no-Amex-imposed-foreign-transaction-fee point for purchases outside the United States.
This removes one issuer fee, but it does not answer every pricing question. The amount posted still reflects the applicable network conversion, the merchant’s currency choice and the card’s transaction terms. It also does not guarantee acceptance. Check the locations you will use most—small restaurants, transit kiosks, hotels, car-rental desks and online merchants—and carry another payment method for gaps.
Platinum points have category-specific rates
Do not describe Platinum as earning one flat travel rate. Current U.S. Platinum Membership Rewards terms describe one point per dollar on eligible purchases plus four additional points for eligible travel purchases. That produces five points per dollar only when the purchase meets the terms’ definition of eligible travel and no exclusion applies.

A prepaid hotel reservation made through that channel is not the same category as every hotel, airline, rail, rideshare or travel-agency charge. Confirm the merchant coding, booking channel, payment timing and any cap or exclusion before forecasting points.
Points are not automatically a percentage cash return. Their value depends on the redemption route, transfer conditions and the value you can obtain. Because no independent valuation is established here, compare the redemption you actually intend to use rather than multiplying points by an assumed dollar rate.
Gold and Platinum benefits are not interchangeable
Gold and Platinum have separate benefit pages and terms. A benefit shown on the Platinum page should not be credited to Gold, and a Gold fee or earning rule should not be projected onto Platinum. Before applying, list the exact benefits you would use—such as travel credits, lounge access, insurance or points categories—and verify that each appears in the card’s current terms for your country.

Platinum’s Premium Global Assist description says: “Whenever you travel more than 100 miles from home, Premium Global Assist® Hotline is available for 24/7 emergency assistance and coordination services.” Assistance and coordination are not the same as comprehensive travel insurance. The benefit has terms and limits, and you should read the full description before relying on it for medical, evacuation, legal or trip-disruption costs.

Foreign exchange: how to compare the real cost
Use a transaction-level checklist rather than comparing slogans:
- Identify the issuing country and exact Revolut plan or American Express card.
- Check whether the purchase is in a currency covered by the plan or card terms.
- For Revolut, verify the remaining monthly allowance and whether the transaction occurs under a weekend, fair-use or other timing rule.
- For American Express, confirm the no-foreign-transaction-fee statement for your card and review the network conversion and merchant currency-selection implications.
- Decline unnecessary dynamic currency conversion at the terminal and keep the receipt showing the original currency.
- Compare the final posted amount, not only the rate displayed before authorization.
For a traveler who exchanges more than a plan allowance, Revolut’s marginal fee can matter more than the monthly subscription. For a traveler who stays within an allowance but values points, an American Express card may be more attractive if the relevant merchant accepts it and the redemption value justifies the card cost. Neither conclusion can be made from the brand name alone.
Travel cash: decide how much ATM access you really need
Cash requirements vary sharply by destination. Build a simple estimate using the number of days, expected cash-only purchases and a reserve for transport or emergencies. Compare that total with Revolut’s applicable out-of-network allowance, remembering the separate ATM-operator surcharge and the 2% Revolut fee after the allowance.
The evidence used here does not establish a like-for-like American Express ATM benefit. Do not assume that a card’s strong purchase rewards make it a good cash card. Read the cash-advance section of your exact American Express agreement for availability, fees, interest timing and ATM restrictions before planning to withdraw cash.

Acceptance and backup planning
No authoritative comparative acceptance study is established for these products in the material used here. Acceptance changes by country, merchant category, terminal configuration and the specific card issued. Hotels, airlines and large retailers may accept American Express while a small local merchant may not; Revolut acceptance likewise depends on the card and payment network attached to your account.
Before departure, check acceptance with the merchants that matter most and keep a backup card or another payment method stored separately from your primary wallet. Carry a small emergency cash reserve where lawful and practical. This is risk management, not a claim that one brand has a universally higher acceptance rate.

Travel protection: compare the policy, not the headline
Revolut’s U.S. paid-plan page advertises travel insurance, while the American Express Platinum page describes travel benefits and Premium Global Assist assistance. Those descriptions do not establish equivalent insurance products. Compare the underlying documents for:
- Who is insured, including companions and family members.
- Whether you must pay for the trip with the account or card.
- Covered events, exclusions, deductibles and maximum reimbursement.
- Medical treatment, evacuation, baggage, cancellation and interruption coverage.
- Residency, destination, trip-length and age restrictions.
- How to contact the administrator and what documentation a claim requires.
Do not treat emergency-assistance coordination as a promise to pay every expense, and do not treat an insurance headline as proof that a claim will be covered. The certificate and card terms control.

Revolut is the stronger fit when exchange control and cash limits come first
- You want a $0 Standard option and prefer not to pay an annual card fee.
- Your spending fits the relevant plan’s exchange allowance and you can monitor monthly usage.
- You expect ATM withdrawals and can stay within the applicable allowance, accounting for operator surcharges.
- You value a paid-plan feature such as advertised insurance or discounted lounge access and have confirmed its conditions.
- You need a travel account whose primary job is spending and withdrawing in foreign currency rather than maximizing transferable points.
Premium or Metal may make sense only after you calculate the annualized plan cost against your expected exchange and ATM usage. Metal’s published U.S. price is $16.99 per month, or $203.88 over 12 months before any price change; that arithmetic is a cost calculation, not a claim that the plan will save every traveler money.
American Express may fit when points and card benefits drive the decision
- You can use the card at the merchants you visit and have a dependable backup for non-accepting locations.
- You will redeem Membership Rewards through a route that gives you value you understand, rather than assuming a fixed cash rate.
- Your spending qualifies for the Platinum travel categories, including the separately described prepaid-hotel-through-Amex-Travel category where applicable.
- You will use the card’s travel benefits enough to justify its current fee for your exact product.
- You prefer a traditional charge or credit-card relationship and do not need a Revolut-style monthly exchange allowance.
The no-foreign-transaction-fee statement can simplify overseas purchase-cost comparisons, but it does not remove acceptance, conversion-rate or rewards-eligibility questions.
A practical break-even worksheet
Use your own 12-month numbers instead of a generic winner:
- Write down expected foreign purchases, cash withdrawals and currencies.
- For each Revolut plan, record the current monthly price, exchange allowance, ATM allowance, timing rules and marginal fees.
- For each American Express card under consideration, record the current annual fee, eligible earning categories, benefits you will actually use and redemption route.
- Estimate the cost of any backup payment method needed because of acceptance gaps.
- Calculate Revolut’s annual plan cost plus expected exchange and ATM fees.
- Calculate American Express’s annual fee plus any cash-advance or other transaction costs, then subtract only the realistic value of benefits and rewards you will redeem.
- Run a low-spend and high-spend scenario. A plan that wins at $500 of foreign spending may lose at $5,000 if an allowance is exceeded—or vice versa.
- Recheck prices and terms immediately before applying; the cited Revolut figures and benefit pages can change.
Keep rewards and fee savings in separate columns. This prevents a speculative point valuation from hiding a known exchange or ATM charge.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing a plan with the wrong card
“Amex” could mean Gold, Platinum or another product, while Revolut could mean Standard, Premium or Metal. Put the exact names at the top of your worksheet and use only the terms for those products.

Assuming U.K. rewards apply in the U.S.
Revolut’s U.K. RevPoints page demonstrates that rewards are localized. It does not establish a U.S. earning rate or redemption catalog. Check the rewards section attached to your U.S. account.
Calling every travel purchase 5X
Platinum’s five-point result depends on the eligible-travel definition, and the product page’s 5X hotel example is specifically for eligible prepaid hotel bookings through Amex Travel. Other travel purchases may earn a different rate.
Ignoring the ATM operator’s fee
Even when a withdrawal is within Revolut’s allowance, the machine owner may add a surcharge. Read the ATM confirmation screen and cancel if the total cost is unacceptable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTreating assistance as insurance
Premium Global Assist provides emergency assistance and coordination under its terms; it is not proof of unlimited insurance coverage. Review the relevant policy and exclusions.
Using a benefit headline as a guaranteed value
Insurance, lounge discounts, credits and points have eligibility rules. Assign value only to benefits you can use under the actual terms and dates that apply to you.
Bottom line for a U.S. traveler in 2026
Choose Revolut when a $0 or paid plan, published exchange allowance and ATM budget match the way you spend abroad, and when you have verified the localized rewards and insurance terms. Choose American Express Gold or Platinum when your merchants accept it, your exact card’s fee is justified, and you can use the eligible Membership Rewards categories and travel benefits. American Express’s U.S. Gold and Platinum pages state no Amex-imposed foreign transaction fee on overseas purchases, while Revolut’s U.S. plans make exchange and ATM limits more explicit. Those are different value propositions, so the better card is the one that wins your own 12-month worksheet—not a universal champion.
