This is a look back at the Android-compatible smartwatch choices available in 2018, not a current buying list. For most people who wanted a conventional-looking watch with useful notifications and voice features, the Fossil Q Explorist offered the best overall balance. The smaller Fossil Q Venture made the same case for smaller wrists; the Samsung Gear Sport was a better fit for casual fitness.
Quick verdict
| Best for | 2018 pick | Why it stood out |
|---|---|---|
| Most Android users | Fossil Q Explorist | A traditional watch look, sharp round screen, responsive controls, notifications and voice features. |
| Smaller wrists | Fossil Q Venture | The same basic proposition in a smaller case. |
| Casual fitness | Samsung Gear Sport | GPS, heart-rate monitoring, swim tracking, activity reminders and a rotating bezel. |
| Battery-focused experimentation | TicWatch Pro | A layered display with a low-power mode, though its bulk and slower interaction were trade-offs. |
| Serious running or cycling | None of these | The Gear Sport’s GPS was judged inadequate for competitive training; a dedicated sports watch is a better category to consider. |
The picks reflect the priorities of a late-2018 lifestyle smartwatch review, not a universal ranking. That review listed Indian prices at publication of ₹17,495 for the Explorist, ₹15,995 for the Venture and ₹22,990 for the Gear Sport; these are historical prices, not current valuations or U.S. launch prices. The original review and its testing context provide the basis for the comparisons below.
What counted as an Android smartwatch in 2018?
“Android smartwatch” described watches that could pair with Android phones, not one shared operating system. Fossil’s watches, the TicWatch models, Huawei Watch 2 and LG Watch Sport and Style ran Android Wear 2.0-era software, later called Wear OS. Samsung’s Gear Sport ran Tizen. Fitbit Ionic was a fitness-first alternative with smartwatch functions. Apple Watch was primarily intended for iPhone users, so it does not belong in an Android-focused ranking.
Pairing compatibility did not mean identical features or setup. Gear Sport could work with non-Samsung Android phones, but required Samsung companion apps and did not offer the same level of Samsung-specific integration. Phone model, Android version, region and app availability could all affect the experience.

Best overall: Fossil Q Explorist
Why it won
The Explorist made a stronger case through its overall wearability than through a standout specification. Its conventional styling, fully round screen, fashion and strap choices, and responsive controls made it easier to treat as an everyday watch than many gadget-forward alternatives. Notifications, quick replies and voice input covered the smartwatch tasks most people would use regularly, while its fitness features were adequate for casual activity.
For buyers choosing a fashion-branded watch in 2018, Fossil Group’s brands—including Diesel, Skagen, Kate Spade, Armani Exchange, Movado and Tag Heuer—often shared broadly similar internal hardware within the product families discussed at the time. Case design, materials, controls and styling still differed, however; brand association alone did not make every model identical in fit or use.
Where it fell short
Wear OS had useful apps and Google Assistant, but the experience was not uniformly polished. Gesture-heavy navigation and small touch targets could be awkward on a compact display. Voice dictation was useful but not flawless, and fitness motivation and tracking were less compelling than on more exercise-oriented watches. Performance could vary with older processors, and typical use generally meant charging daily. The Explorist makes the most sense for someone who values style, notifications and voice functions more than advanced sports tracking or multi-day endurance.
Rank #2

When you enable the "VeryFit" App to receive messages, notifications will be displayed on the smartwatch. With an IP68 rating, it's resistant to sweat, rain, and handwashing (Not for swimming or hot showers)
- All-Day Health Monitoring: Android smart watch is equipped with a high-precision optical sensor that supports 24h real-time heart rate monitoring, helping you stay informed about your physical condition. It also intelligently analyzes sleep quality, accurately identifying deep sleep, light sleep, and awake phases to help improve your sleep habits. Paired with its dedicated app, you can view long-term health trends and receive personalized insights to gradually develop a healthier lifestyle
Best smaller option: Fossil Q Venture
The Q Venture was the smaller-wrist counterpart to the Explorist, with a similar everyday-watch and Wear OS proposition. Case size and comfort are the practical distinction: a watch that fits well is easier to wear throughout the day, while a smaller case can also leave less room for physical controls. Choose it if the Explorist feels too large; it does not remove the platform’s battery, navigation or fitness limitations.

Best for casual fitness: Samsung Gear Sport
What it did well
The Gear Sport was the better choice for activity reminders and recreational exercise. Its feature set included built-in GPS, heart-rate monitoring, swim tracking and a rotating bezel that made menu navigation less dependent on tapping tiny screen targets. The original review also rated its battery endurance favorably against the Wear OS alternatives.
Why it was not the overall pick
Tizen had a smaller selection of major third-party apps than Wear OS, and Samsung’s S Voice and voice transcription were weaker than Google’s voice features. Replies by voice were best kept short. Non-Samsung Android owners faced extra setup and a less seamless experience; Samsung’s compatibility guidance for older watches lists the Gear Sport among older models and ties compatibility to requirements including Android version and at least 1.5 GB of phone RAM. That guidance is not a guarantee that every feature or companion app remains fully supported in 2026.
Rank #3
- 【Crystal-Clear Bluetooth Calls & Message Notification】 AEAC smart watch with Bluetooth 5.3 and a built-in DSP chip, enjoy ultra-clear call quality and zero lag. Stay connected on the go with real-time SMS and app notifications (Not supporting reply messages)—all from your wrist.
- 【1.85" HD Display with 60Hz Refresh Rate】Experience crisp visuals and smooth scrolling on the vibrant 1.85" HD touchscreen. Plus, you can also upload photos of your family, pets, and scenery to customize a watch face with your own style.
- 【24/7 Health Monitoring】Track your health around the clock with advanced sensors. Monitor heart rate, sleep stages, stress levels, and more, helping you make informed choices for a healthier lifestyle.
- 【Fitness Tracking with 100+ Modes】Elevate your workouts with over 100 sport modes, including running, swimming, yoga, and more. The IP68 waterproof design ensures it’s ready for your toughest adventures, from the gym to the pool.
- 【Seamless Compatibility & Long Battery Life】AEAC smart watch works effortlessly with iOS and Android smartphones. Enjoy up to 7 days of battery life on a single charge, so you never have to worry about recharging.
The Gear Sport was also more sporty in appearance than the Fossil watches. Its GPS and activity sensors suited general wellness and casual workouts, not competitive pace or distance training: the 2018 review found its GPS accuracy inadequate for that purpose and cited severe GPS-track problems in independent testing. These are findings about the tested product, not a claim that every individual unit will produce the same result.
Other 2018 watches worth considering
TicWatch Pro
The original TicWatch Pro paired Wear OS apps and notifications with GPS, heart-rate features and a layered display. Its LCD-style low-power mode offered a battery-saving option, but did not erase the drawbacks: the watch was thick and bulky, and its older processor made interaction slower than the best alternatives. Do not confuse this 2018 model with the later Pro 4G/LTE or Pro 5 generations, which have materially different specifications. Mobvoi’s Pro 4G/LTE page and Pro 5 page describe those later products, not the original watch.
TicWatch E
The TicWatch E included GPS, heart-rate monitoring and an ambient-light-adjusting display, but its plastic construction looked less refined, its older processor could feel dated, and it lacked a particularly convenient rotating control. It was a harder recommendation late in the cycle as newer wearable hardware was arriving.

Huawei Watch 2
The Huawei Watch 2 brought GPS and Android Wear 2.0, but its thick body, relatively slow performance and raised non-rotating bezel made navigation less comfortable. Without a rotating crown or bezel, edge gestures and precise taps could be awkward; it was not compelling for most buyers at its price.
LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style
The LG Watch Sport packed in GPS, LTE, calling, texting, a speaker and heart-rate monitoring, but the feature load came in a thick, heavy-looking body that was less comfortable to wear. The slimmer Watch Style was more comfortable, but offered fewer advanced features, had a less compelling design and could be difficult to find in some colors and configurations.
Fitbit Ionic
The Ionic made more sense for existing Fitbit users who valued longer battery life and GPS exercise tracking over general smartwatch interaction. Notification replies were limited, while syncing and setup were less convenient than on the leading Wear OS options. It was best understood as a fitness tracker with smartwatch features, not the strongest all-purpose Android smartwatch.

Choose by your main priority
- Want a traditional everyday watch with Android notifications? The Fossil Q Explorist was the strongest general-purpose choice in the 2018 comparison.
- Want the same idea in a smaller case? Consider the Fossil Q Venture.
- Want activity reminders, swim tracking and casual GPS workouts? The Samsung Gear Sport offered the more fitness-focused experience, especially alongside a Samsung phone.
- Want to experiment with a low-power display mode? The original TicWatch Pro was distinctive, provided its bulky case suited you.
- Need dependable GPS data for serious training? None of these lifestyle watches is the right substitute for a dedicated GPS sports watch.
Should you buy one in 2026?
These are discontinued 2018-era products, not safe default recommendations for a new smartwatch purchase. An old watch may still appeal as a low-cost or collectible device, but years of age create practical risks: battery degradation, missing charging docks, reduced parts and strap availability, water resistance that may no longer be dependable, and companion apps or software features that are no longer supported. LTE models also depend on carrier support and activation arrangements that may have changed.
Before buying used, confirm that the exact watch can pair with your phone, that the required app is available in your region, and that the seller has the correct charger. Check battery behavior and treat any water-resistance claim cautiously. These are age-related precautions, not verified failure rates for every model.
For a new watch, start with the current ecosystem rather than the 2018 winners. Google’s current Wear OS device page covers a newer generation that includes Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch, Mobvoi, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO and other manufacturers. Current devices differ substantially from the watches reviewed here, and the page does not establish ongoing update support for any specific 2018 model.
Final verdict
In the late-2018 market, Fossil’s Q Explorist was the best-balanced Android smartwatch for people who wanted a stylish daily watch with notifications, voice features and casual fitness functions; the Venture adapted that proposition for smaller wrists. Samsung’s Gear Sport was the better casual-fitness choice, but weaker apps and voice interaction, plus its GPS limitations for serious training, kept it from being the best all-rounder.
