Its headline additions are two platform-specific graphics modes. Square Enix specifies Performance mode at 1080p/60fps and Graphics mode at 1440p/30fps; those are official specifications, not independent test results. Nintendo says the Switch and Switch 2 editions cannot share save data, and that it has no plans to sell an upgrade pack. For newcomers, the Switch 2 version bundles the Definitive Edition’s extra stories and features with a choice of visual priorities. For owners of the original Switch game, the case for buying it again depends on whether those modes justify starting over.
What the Switch 2 edition includes
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 release for 24 September 2026 and classifies it as a single-player RPG. It includes the content associated with the original Definitive Edition: additional story chapters focused on party members, Japanese voices and additional English voices, a choice between 3D and 2D presentation, and an orchestral score. Nintendo also lists the Trodain Set, Baby Boar Set and Happy Adventurer Set among the included item sets. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing for its product details.

The underlying game is a turn-based RPG. Nintendo’s description of the original Switch Definitive Edition also lists HD or 16-bit visuals, symphonic or synthesized music, English or Japanese audio, character-focused stories, visits to past Dragon Quest worlds, Draconian Quest difficulty options and Photo Mode. These are feature descriptions, not a guarantee that every mode or option will suit every player.

Switch 2 graphics and performance modes
Square Enix specifies two optimization modes for Switch 2. The figures below are the publisher’s stated specifications; they should not be read as independent measurements of actual frame rates or image quality.
#1 Best Overall
- The eleventh installment in the fabled DRAGON QUEST series, taking the tale of the legendary heroes right back to its origins, comes to Nintendo Switch 2!
- What does it mean to be a hero? A young lad from a country village sets out to find the answer to this question, embarking on an epic adventure that will lead him to uncover the secrets that lie at the heart of his world.
- DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 contains all of the content added in the original Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch, including: new story chapters where the party members take center stage, Japanese voices and additional English voices, the ability to switch between 3D and 2D mode, and an orchestral score.
- This new edition for Nintendo Switch 2 also introduces new optimization modes, allowing you to prioritize graphics or performance.
- GAME-KEY CARD. 30 GB - Full game download via internet required.
| Mode | Square Enix’s stated specification | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | 1080p at 60fps | Players who prioritize a higher stated frame rate. |
| Graphics | 1440p at 30fps | Players who prioritize the higher stated resolution. |
Square Enix says the game content remains the same between the modes and that graphics specifications differ by console. The choice is therefore about the advertised visual-performance balance, not access to different story content. The two specifications are described in Square Enix’s support FAQ.
Should existing Switch owners buy it?
The central drawback for an existing owner is that Nintendo treats the Switch 2 release as a separate version. Its original Switch product page states: “There are no plans to sell an upgrade pack to upgrade the Nintendo Switch™ version to the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version.” That page also says save data is incompatible between the versions. Check Nintendo’s original Switch listing for the current notice.
Rank #2
- Perfectly balanced turn-based battles and an impressive scope of activities as you explore a massive, gorgeous world
- The option for fully orchestrated field and battle tunes, and the ability to change between HD and retro-inspired 16-bit visuals.
- Bonus characters stories included in the Definitive Edition
- Follow the elaborate tale of The Luminary branded as “Darkspawn” and assemble a charismatic cast of loyal companions whose designs are inspired by the famed Akira Toriyama
- Capture your favourite gameplay moments with Photo Mode
That makes the decision less about whether Dragon Quest XI S is a worthwhile RPG and more about whether its Switch 2 presentation merits another purchase and a fresh playthrough. If you have not played it, the Switch 2 edition brings the Definitive Edition’s additions and the new mode choices together. If you already have a Switch save or recently finished the game, that progress does not carry over, and Nintendo’s listing gives no upgrade path. Decide based on your interest in replaying or starting anew, rather than expecting to continue your existing run.

Nintendo says the Switch 2 edition can only be played on Switch 2; it does not run on the original Switch. The original Switch edition, by contrast, is listed as supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch. That backward compatibility does not convert the original game into the separate Switch 2 edition or make its save data transferable. Nintendo’s listings for the Switch 2 version and original Switch version specify the platform distinction.

How the version choice looks in review
Nintendo Life reviewer Mitch Vogel, writing about the European release on 24 September 2026, praised the game as a strong example of a classic JRPG while describing the Switch 2 version as anticlimactic for existing owners and its value proposition as discouraging. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus or a performance test. It aligns with the practical split: the game’s broader appeal is distinct from the case for rebuying it when there is no planned upgrade pack and save continuity is unavailable.
