The safest way to start Reverse: 1999 is to build around one main damage dealer, add a support that improves that character, and then bring a healer, shielder, tank, or second support to cover survival and utility. Keep the early roster to roughly four to six well-developed characters, invest in no more than one six-star unit at first, and spend materials only on the next upgrade your core team actually needs.
Progress the story to unlock systems, collect passive income from the Wilderness, use Activity on a named farming goal, and adjust your team for each stage’s Afflatus and Mental or Reality defenses. The role-and-resource framework below remains useful even when patches, banners, events, tier lists, and redeem codes change.
The beginner team formula
A balanced party is not simply four high-rarity characters. It is a small group whose jobs fit together and whose upgrades you can afford. The most reliable starting structure is:

- One support: a character who buffs the carry, weakens enemies, controls actions, or supplies another useful utility effect.
- One survival or second-support slot: a healer, shielder, tank, or another support chosen according to the stage’s damage and mechanics.
- One flex slot: a substitute for a fallen unit or a specialist who covers a missing role, Afflatus, defense type, or mechanic.
This is a planning model rather than a mandatory formation. Some early story battles can be cleared without dedicated healing, while later content makes keeping the carry alive much more important. Mixed-role characters can fill gaps when your account does not have a pure healer, support, or damage dealer.
What each role contributes
Main damage dealer
Your damage dealer receives the first serious investment because every other slot is easier to evaluate once you know how the team intends to win. Choose a character whose attack type and Afflatus suit the content you are currently clearing, then give that character priority for levels, Insight, Resonance, and Psychube resources.

A carry does not have to be the rarest unit you own. A lower-rarity character with a coherent kit can be more useful than an expensive unit whose damage type clashes with the stage or whose upgrades would consume materials needed elsewhere. The practical test is whether the character can deal dependable damage after your support effects are applied and whether you can keep the character alive long enough to act.
Support
Supports create damage indirectly. Buffs can raise the carry’s output, debuffs can make enemies easier to defeat, and control or utility can prevent dangerous turns. Select the support after identifying the carry so that the two kits reinforce each other instead of competing for the same action pattern or resource type.

When comparing two supports, ask which one improves the next bottleneck. If enemies survive because your carry lacks damage, favor a buff or debuff that raises effective damage. If the carry already defeats targets comfortably but loses to enemy turns, control or defensive utility may be the better choice.
Survival unit
Survival units include healers, shielders, and tanks. Their value is measured by whether the team can finish a stage, not by damage on a results screen. Add one when incoming damage, disabling effects, or long fights begin to defeat your carry before the battle ends.
In very easy story stages, a second support can be faster than a healer. Keep a survival option developed enough to swap in when the difficulty rises; otherwise, you may have to rebuild an underdeveloped defensive character at the exact point where materials are tightest.
Flex or substitute
The fourth position is insurance. It can replace a defeated unit, cover a missing Afflatus, provide a different damage type, or answer a specific enemy mechanic. Do not raise every possible substitute at once. Maintain one practical option and develop additional specialists only when a stage gives you a clear reason.

How to assemble a team for any stage
- Read the stage before spending materials. Check the recommended Afflatus, enemy line-up, special rules, and whether opponents emphasize Mental or Reality defense. These details tell you which carry and attack profile will perform most efficiently.
- Choose the carry first. Start with an owned character who can exploit the stage rather than trying to force a favorite into every fight. If two candidates work, prefer the one whose current level, Insight, and Psychube are already ahead.
- Match a support to that carry. Look for buffs, debuffs, control, or utility that improve the carry’s actual turns. A theoretically powerful support is a poor choice if its effects do not help your selected damage dealer.
- Decide between a second support and survival. Use a second support when the team survives comfortably and damage is the limiting factor. Use a healer, shielder, or tank when enemy pressure causes deaths, forces defensive turns, or prevents the carry from completing a rotation.
- Assign the flex slot deliberately. Put in a substitute, alternate Afflatus, different damage profile, or mechanic specialist. If nothing specific is missing, keep the most dependable replacement available rather than adding another partially built attacker.
- Test before rebuilding. If the team fails, identify the failure: insufficient damage, the wrong attack type into defenses, loss of control, or inadequate survival. Change one variable at a time so you know which adjustment solved the problem.
Afflatus, Mental defense, and Reality defense
Afflatus is a stage and character compatibility check. The team-building guide treats recommended Afflatus as a reason to adapt, not as an absolute ban on every other character. A well-built unit with strong support can still work outside the recommendation, while a poorly matched character may struggle even when its rarity is high.
Also inspect whether enemies favor Mental or Reality defense. Your carry’s effective damage depends on the interaction between its attack profile and those defenses. If a stage repeatedly reduces your damage, changing the damage dealer or flex slot can be more efficient than pushing several expensive upgrade levels into the same mismatch.
Use these checks in order: first ask whether your carry can attack the stage efficiently, then whether your support amplifies that plan, and finally whether your survival unit lets the plan run for enough turns. This prevents a common mistake: replacing an entire team when only one damage or defense mismatch is responsible for the failure.
How many characters should you build?
Prydwen’s beginner guidance recommends roughly four to six units early on, depending on how many high-rarity characters you plan to develop. That number is a resource-management recommendation, not a game requirement. It gives you enough coverage for a main team, a substitute, and basic Afflatus or role changes without turning every new acquisition into a material bill.

A broader, functional core normally gives a new account more options than several highly specialized characters who compete for the same upgrade materials.
A practical roster filter
- Keep: your best current carry, the support that most clearly improves it, one dependable survival unit, and one flex option.
- Add next: a character that covers a missing role or Afflatus and can share useful resources without delaying the core.
- Delay: duplicate carries, niche specialists, and units that would require a completely separate set of upgrades before they contribute.
- Reconsider: any unit whose only advantage is rarity but whose kit does not solve a problem in your current stages.
A resource routine that prevents waste
1. Push the main story
Story progress unlocks systems, farming features, and rewards that make later upgrades cheaper. Advance until a stage genuinely stops you, then improve the specific bottleneck rather than farming every material in advance.

2. Spend Activity against a named goal
Before using Activity, write down the next upgrade you are pursuing: a level cap, Insight requirement, Resonance level, Psychube level, or a material needed for one of those steps. Spend on that requirement instead of running a stage simply because it is available.
Prydwen’s routine also notes that the replay feature can claim rewards from up to four runs at once, as described on its guide page. This is a convenience for collecting completed activity, not a reason to abandon the same upgrade priority.
3. Collect Wilderness income
The Wilderness supplies passive Dust and Sharpodonty. Story rewards that improve Wilderness buildings are account investments: they do not immediately raise a character’s combat statistics, but they continue paying out while you progress elsewhere.
The handbook specifically highlights progressing the Paleohall, Dust Bell Tower, and Sharpodonty Market. Treat those buildings as part of your long-term economy and collect their output consistently instead of leaving passive income unclaimed.
4. Use Pneuma Analysis for Psychube resources
Pneuma Analysis is the recommended routine source for Psychube resources in Prydwen’s beginner guidance. Include it when your carry’s equipment is the current bottleneck, but do not divert every Activity point to Psychubes while a level or Insight upgrade would unlock a more important power spike.
5. Unlock and repeat the recurring modes
Artificial Somnambulism unlocks early in Chapter 3 according to the beginner guide. Attempt Surface stages when they become available: the guide describes Surface as a source of weekly passive income and a path to unlocking Limbo. It states that Limbo can award up to 600 Clear Drops every two weeks.

Those reward amounts and mode rules are version-dependent. Check the in-game mode information after a major patch before planning a budget around them. The strategic rule is stable: unlock recurring content early and use its rewards to fund the upgrade that is currently blocking progress.

Insight and character levels
Insight raises character level caps and unlocks passive abilities. The Prydwen handbook lists these caps:

The same handbook notes that five-star and six-star characters typically have Insight 3, while lower rarities may cap earlier. Check the individual character’s progression rather than assuming every unit uses the same path.
For a new account, level and Insight upgrades on the main carry usually come before spreading equivalent materials across several undeveloped characters. Raise the support and survival unit enough to perform their jobs, then return to the carry when the next upgrade is affordable.

Resonance
Resonance unlocks at Insight 1 and improves statistics through a configurable grid. The handbook lists grid-expansion breakpoints at Resonance levels 3, 5, 7, 9, and 10. Those breakpoints make early levels more attractive than blindly pushing one character as high as possible.
Resonance is resource intensive. After level 10, each additional level requires a rare Crystal Casket and does not provide another grid expansion. A sensible beginner approach is to raise the core team to useful breakpoints, stop when the next level would consume scarce materials for a small immediate gain, and return later when the account economy is stronger.
Psychubes
Psychubes are the game’s equipment-like system. They come from in-game shops, events, and rewards, provide statistics, and can include a unique passive. Leveling and amplification use different materials, so treat them as separate spending decisions.
Prydwen advises focusing on Psychube levels before amplification for most players. When amplification becomes relevant, prioritize the main damage dealer’s Psychube first because its passive and statistics affect the team’s win condition most directly. Do not amplify several Psychubes while your carry’s level or Insight remains behind the stage’s demands.
Spend materials with a bottleneck ledger
A simple ledger prevents impulse upgrades. Before claiming or spending a resource, record four items:
- Blocked content: the exact stage, Surface floor, or Limbo attempt you cannot clear.
- Failure reason: damage, defense mismatch, survival, control, or an unfilled mechanic.
- Cheapest useful fix: a level, Insight, Resonance breakpoint, Psychube level, or team swap.
- Next checkpoint: the stage you will retry after the upgrade.
This method also tells you when not to spend. If a new character does not address the recorded failure, keep the materials for the established core. If a support solves the issue with a modest upgrade while a second carry would need several expensive tracks, choose the support.
How to adapt as difficulty increases
When story stages become damage checks
Confirm the carry’s Afflatus and the enemy’s Mental or Reality defense before farming more levels. Replace a mismatched flex slot first, then improve the carry’s Psychube or Resonance if the damage profile is already appropriate.
When the team dies before it can act
Move from two supports to a survival unit, improve the healer, shielder, or tank enough to survive the threatening turns, and use control or defensive utility if it prevents repeated enemy actions. A slightly slower clear is preferable to repeatedly losing a run after investing in offense alone.

Use the flex slot for the required mechanic or Afflatus rather than rebuilding all four positions. If the specialist will be useful again, add it to the six-unit planning limit; otherwise, borrow an existing role from the core and delay permanent investment.
When a patch changes the environment
Reverse: 1999 is a live-service game. AllGameGuides’ July 15, 2026 guidance warns that patches, banners, events, and new characters can change recommendations, so old tier lists and pull plans should not be treated as permanent. Keep the evergreen principles—role coverage, synergy, Afflatus, defense matching, and material discipline—then verify current stage rules and announcements in the game.
For example, the official Steam community announcement listed The Temporal Scale event from the September 24, 2026 update through November 2, 2026 at 04:59 UTC-5, with its event shop available through November 5, 2026 at 04:59 UTC-5. Dates like these show why event farming and shop priorities must be checked against the current announcement rather than copied from an older guide.
Redeem codes and anniversary questions
Community discussions frequently ask for anniversary redeem codes, but a question in a weekly thread does not establish that a code is active. No verified current anniversary code or complete code list is established here. Check an official in-game notice or official announcement before entering any code, and be cautious with lists that lack an expiry date, region, or source.
