Buy the original Nintendo Switch version if you already own it or want the lowest-cost way to play the same game. Nintendo lists that version as supported on Nintendo Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition only if Joy-Con 2 mouse control and Nintendo’s stated frame-rate improvement are worth paying for. It does not add story content, stages, plushies, items, modes, or other game content.
Existing owners can purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack, provided they own the original Reverie in the Moonlight Nintendo Switch game. Nintendo has not published a numerical frame-rate target, resolution comparison, retail price, or independent performance measurements, so the practical difference is a smoother presentation and an optional mouse-style control method rather than a new game.

Switch 2 vs. Switch at a glance
The two releases contain the same game. The Switch 2 Edition is a hardware-enhanced version for players who want to use the Joy-Con 2 mouse sensor and who value Nintendo’s promised smoother frame rate and visuals. The standard Switch release remains the sensible choice for most existing owners and for anyone playing on an original Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite.

What you actually get in each release
The original Nintendo Switch version
The standard release is the complete game as listed for Nintendo Switch. If you play it on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo classifies it as supported and says its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. That means backward compatibility gives you access to the same game without requiring the enhanced edition.
This version is also the relevant purchase for an original Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite. Nintendo notes that the experience may differ on Switch Lite, so handheld-only buyers should not assume that every aspect of play will feel identical to playing on a television with detachable Joy-Con controllers.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
The Switch 2 Edition keeps the same game content but adds two published enhancements. First, Nintendo says it supports the Joy-Con 2 mouse sensor, allowing a Joy-Con 2 to be used as a mouse. Second, Nintendo says an improved frame rate provides smoother gameplay and visuals.

They do not represent a separate campaign or an expanded package. Nintendo’s product wording is explicit: “There are no differences in game content.” Do not buy this edition expecting new story scenes, additional stages, new plushie types, extra items, or a different single-player structure.
The Upgrade Pack
The Upgrade Pack is the path for someone who already owns the original Nintendo Switch game and now wants the Switch 2 Edition features. Nintendo states that the pack requires the original Reverie in the Moonlight Nintendo Switch game. Treat the pack as an enhancement to an existing copy, not as a replacement game that can be used without the required Switch version.
Before purchasing, confirm which Nintendo account owns your game and which console you will use to download the upgrade. Nintendo’s listing does not publish a separate price in the supplied product information, so check the live store page for the amount and any regional terms at the time you buy.

What changes on Switch 2
Joy-Con 2 mouse control
The Switch 2 Edition supports the mouse sensor built into Joy-Con 2. Nintendo’s wording says a Joy-Con 2 can be used as a mouse. This is a control option, not a requirement: the edition remains a console game with TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, and the published feature description does not say that every action must be performed with mouse input.

Mouse control may appeal to players who prefer pointing or more direct cursor-like movement when managing the game’s defensive tools. It is most relevant if you already have Joy-Con 2 controllers and are comfortable changing your control method. If you do not own Joy-Con 2 or have no interest in mouse-style input, this feature has no practical value for your purchase decision.
A smoother frame rate and visuals
Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition has an “Improved frame rate” that provides smoother gameplay and visuals. That is a qualitative promise. Nintendo has not published a target such as 30 or 60 frames per second, a frame-time analysis, a resolution comparison, or measurements showing how often the game reaches a particular rate.
Consequently, the safe expectation is a smoother presentation, not a guaranteed numerical performance level. The effect may be more noticeable during movement or busy action than in static scenes, but no independent test data is available here to quantify the difference. Anyone deciding solely on performance should evaluate the enhancement as Nintendo describes it rather than treating it as a specified frame-rate upgrade.
No content expansion
The Switch 2 Edition does not add game content. The two versions share the same story, stages, enemies, plushie roster, collection systems, and single-player scope. The difference is the way the existing game is controlled and displayed on newer hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Nintendo describes an action game built around Tete’s dreams. Scary monsters attack those dreams, while stuffed animals defend him. Tete cannot fight directly, so your decisions revolve around selecting and positioning plushies that fill different combat roles.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Plushies and combat roles
Nintendo lists 40 types of plushies. The roster includes short-range, long-range, and support roles, so the defense system is not simply a matter of placing identical attackers. Short-range plushies are suited to threats that come close, long-range plushies can contribute from farther away, and support plushies provide utility rather than serving only as damage dealers.
The role structure matters to the edition comparison because both versions contain the same 40 plushie types. The Switch 2 Edition does not provide an exclusive unit or a separate balance system; it presents the same strategic choices with its control and performance enhancements.
Items and combinations
Nintendo also lists more than 100 items to collect and combine strategically between attacks. Those items give the game a preparation layer: you gather resources, decide which combinations best fit the threats ahead, and then use the resulting setup when the next attack arrives.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Again, this system is shared by both editions. Buying the Switch 2 Edition does not increase the item count or unlock combinations unavailable in the original release. If your priority is access to the complete collection and strategic loop, the standard Switch game already supplies it.
Release date, size, languages, and supported play
Nintendo’s listings give November 19, 2026 as the release date for both the Switch 2 Edition and the Nintendo Switch listing. Because that date is in the future relative to October 18, 2026, store availability, pricing, and any regional purchase conditions can still change before launch. Use the regional Nintendo store page for the final commercial details.

Does the Switch version run on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo’s compatibility listing marks Reverie in the Moonlight as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” In practical terms, an owner of the original game can play that copy on Nintendo Switch 2 without buying the Switch 2 Edition merely to gain compatibility.

Compatibility and enhancement are separate decisions. The standard version running on Switch 2 gives you the original game experience. The Switch 2 Edition is for the additional mouse-sensor support and the smoother presentation Nintendo describes. If those two features are not important to you, backward compatibility removes the need to upgrade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which version should you buy?
If you already own the Nintendo Switch game
Keep your existing copy first. It already contains the complete game and is supported on Nintendo Switch 2. Consider the Upgrade Pack only when both of these conditions are true:
- You will play on Nintendo Switch 2.
- You specifically want Joy-Con 2 mouse control, the improved frame rate and visuals, or both.
If you are satisfied with standard controls and the original presentation, spending more on the enhancement is difficult to justify because Nintendo says the content is identical.
If you are buying for an original Nintendo Switch
Buy the standard Nintendo Switch version. The Switch 2 Edition’s published advantages are tied to Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, while the original edition is the one intended for the console you own. You still receive the same action game, 40 plushie types, more than 100 collectible and combinable items, and the same single-player structure.
If you are buying for Nintendo Switch Lite
The standard Switch version is the relevant edition. Nintendo notes that the experience may differ on Switch Lite, so account for its integrated controls and handheld-only format. The Switch 2 Edition’s Joy-Con 2 mouse feature is not a reason to buy the standard game for a Switch Lite, nor does the Switch 2 Edition turn a Switch Lite into a Switch 2.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you are buying specifically for Nintendo Switch 2
Choose based on your tolerance for paying for presentation and input enhancements. Select the Switch 2 Edition if you want the two features Nintendo publishes: Joy-Con 2 mouse-sensor support and an improved frame rate for smoother gameplay and visuals. Select the original Switch version if your priority is obtaining the same game content with the least commitment and you are comfortable with its original control and presentation.
If you are buying for more than one console
Decide which system will be your main place to play. The standard version offers the broadest fit because it is the native Switch release and is supported on Switch 2. The Switch 2 Edition makes sense when the newer console is central to your setup and you want its listed enhancements. Do not assume that buying the Switch 2 Edition adds a second campaign or a separate set of features for an original Switch; Nintendo’s comparison language limits the meaningful differences to the Switch 2 experience.
How to use the upgrade route
Nintendo identifies the Upgrade Pack as requiring the original Nintendo Switch game. The practical sequence is:
- Confirm that you own Reverie in the Moonlight for Nintendo Switch and that the copy is available to the Nintendo account you will use on Nintendo Switch 2.
- On Nintendo Switch 2, open the Nintendo store listing for the Reverie in the Moonlight Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack.
- Review the displayed eligibility, regional price, and account information before confirming the purchase.
- Download and install the upgrade pack, then start the game from your Switch 2 software library.
- If the enhanced features do not appear, verify that the original game and the upgrade pack are associated with the same Nintendo account and that both downloads have completed. Consult Nintendo support for account or download errors rather than purchasing the game again.
The supplied Nintendo listing establishes the prerequisite but does not state whether every ownership format, region, or account-transfer situation is handled identically. Check the store’s current eligibility wording for your specific copy before paying.
What Nintendo has not specified
There are several details you should not treat as settled specifications:
- No numerical frame-rate target is published.
- No resolution comparison between the two editions is published.
- No measured loading-time, frame-time, or image-quality test is published.
- No retail price for the game or Upgrade Pack is provided in the captured listing information.
- No claim is made that the Switch 2 Edition adds content, modes, or players.
These limits do not negate Nintendo’s two feature claims; they define how precisely you can evaluate them before release. “Smoother” describes the intended experience, but it does not tell you whether the game runs at a particular frame rate in every scene. Likewise, mouse support confirms the control option without promising that it is superior for every player or every action.
A practical buying decision
Use this three-question test:
- Do you already own the Switch game? If yes, continue using it on Switch 2 unless the two enhancements are important enough to justify an Upgrade Pack purchase.
- Which console will you use? Original Switch and Switch Lite users should choose the standard version. Switch 2 buyers can choose either, because the original is supported.
- Do you want the listed enhancements? If Joy-Con 2 mouse input and smoother frame-rate presentation matter, choose the Switch 2 Edition. If not, the standard version delivers the same game content.
This approach avoids paying for features you will not use while preserving the option to upgrade an existing copy when your priorities change. It also prevents a common misunderstanding: the Switch 2 Edition is not a content expansion, and backward compatibility means the original game is not made obsolete by Nintendo Switch 2.
Bottom line for each buyer
| Buyer situation | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You already own the Switch game and are happy with it | Keep the original | It is supported on Switch 2 and contains the same complete game |
| You own the Switch game and want mouse input or smoother visuals | Upgrade Pack | It adds the Switch 2 Edition enhancements without buying the base game again |
| You own an original Switch | Standard Switch version | The Switch 2-specific enhancements do not apply to your console |
| You own a Switch Lite | Standard Switch version | It is the relevant release; Nintendo notes the Switch Lite experience may differ |
| You are buying your first copy for Switch 2 and want the enhanced presentation | Switch 2 Edition | It includes Joy-Con 2 mouse support and Nintendo’s improved-frame-rate feature |
| You are buying your first copy for Switch 2 and only want the game | Standard Switch version | Backward compatibility gives access to the same content |
For most existing owners, the original version is the value choice. The Switch 2 Edition is worthwhile when its two hardware-oriented improvements are themselves the reason you are buying; it is not worthwhile as a way to obtain additional content, because there is none.
