Both are PS4 games, and PlayStation says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. That broad compatibility is not a guarantee that every title behaves identically.
What counts as a retro adventure on PS4 or PS5?
“Retro” can mean a classic game made available in a modern collection, or a new remake rooted in an older release. Those are different experiences: a collection preserves and packages legacy games, while a remake rebuilds a particular game for newer hardware. This guide focuses on those retro roots rather than claiming that every pick is a PlayStation-exclusive release. The available official coverage confirms PlayStation versions, but does not establish platform exclusivity title by title.

Genre matters, too. A remake of an old game is not automatically an adventure recommendation. For example, PlayStation describes its PS5 remake of Silent Hill 2, originally released for PS2 in 2001, in the context of survival horror. It is a useful boundary case, not a straightforward fit for an adventure-game shortlist. PlayStation’s retro-remakes guide covers these different kinds of modern releases.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy: three classic adventures in one collection
This is the clearest match for a reader seeking retro adventure games: PlayStation describes Spyro Reignited Trilogy as a collection featuring the first three Spyro adventures originally released for PS1. The documented release years of the first two are 1998 and 1999. The collection is a modern way to revisit that early series, rather than a single new adventure or a claim that the original releases themselves are being played unchanged. The PS4 game Ratchet & Clank remakes the series’ first entry and takes cues from the 2002 PS2 release. PlayStation notes additions including new planets, Clank gameplay, and voice acting. Choose it if you want a modern remake rooted in an older platform adventure; do not expect the original PS2 release reproduced untouched. Will these PS4 games work on PS5?
PlayStation’s support page says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. That is a broad platform-level statement, not a guarantee of identical performance or features for every individual game. PlayStation also cautions that some PS4 features may be unavailable on PS5 and that some titles can show errors or unexpected behavior. Its compatibility list can change, so check the current official information for the particular game before relying on it. Physical discs and the PS5 Digital Edition
A PS4 game disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive. PS4 discs cannot be used in the disc-free PS5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation says the disc must remain in the console while playing. If you are buying a physical copy, check both the platform printed on the game edition and the PS5 model you own; a disc copy is not usable on the Digital Edition.
Game Boost is selective
Some PS4 games may benefit from PS5 Game Boost, which can provide higher or smoother frame rates. It is a benefit for select titles, not a system-wide promise for all PS4 games. PlayStation’s support guidance explains the feature alongside its other backward-compatibility details.

Choosing a version before you buy
- For a collection of PS1-era adventures, look for Spyro Reignited Trilogy on PS4.
- For a rebuilt take on a PS2-era series opener, look for Ratchet & Clank on PS4 and remember that it is a remake with additions.
- If buying physical, make sure your PS5 has a disc drive; the Digital Edition cannot play PS4 discs.
- For any PS4 title you plan to play on PS5, consult PlayStation’s current compatibility guidance, since support details and the list can change.
One prominent PS4 adventure worth separating from this retro list is The Last of Us Part II. PlayStation classifies it as action-adventure and includes it among notable PS4 games playable on PS5, but it is not itself a retro title.
