Is it a real MiG-21, and what variant is on display?
The October 6, 2026 report identifies the displayed aircraft as a retired MiG-21 twin-seat trainer variant, with tandem cockpits and an R-13 turbojet engine. It also describes delta wings and says the aircraft could carry an external gun pod and bombs on underwing pylons. These configuration details are attributed to retired Air Marshal B.U. Chengappa in the coverage; they are not independently confirmed here against aircraft records. The available reporting does not establish a more specific subtype or serial number. India Live’s October 6 report and The Times of India report cover the display.

Why did NITK install it?
Srinivasa Rao Kola, professor in-charge of NITK’s NADAL, said the aircraft and a turboshaft engine installed behind the Main Building are expected to inspire students in NADAL, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and other programmes. The institute’s Board of Governors chairman, M.M. Murugappan, described the installation as an inspiration for future generations and a reminder of discipline, values, and purpose. These are the institute’s stated aims, not evidence of a measured educational or motivational outcome.

It also reports that the type served in the 1965, 1971, and 1999 wars, and remained in IAF operation until a final ceremonial flight in September 2025. These dates and service details are claims in the news reports; the available material does not independently verify them against IAF or HAL historical records.
