Eli Lilly’s investigational drug was still in Phase 3 trials during the period covered by current reports, and no regulator had authorized a retatrutide product. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says retatrutide cannot be used in compounding and has not been found safe and effective for any condition.
That has not stopped online sellers, clinics and social-media promoters from offering vials labeled “research use only” for human weight loss. The contents, strength, sterility and even identity of those products cannot be assumed. Two death reports submitted to the FDA are under review, while poison centers are recording a sharp rise in reported exposures.

What retatrutide is—and what “GLP-3” means
Retatrutide is Eli Lilly’s investigational “triple agonist.” In controlled clinical research, it acts on three hormone pathways involved in appetite, metabolism and blood-sugar regulation. News coverage has highlighted substantial weight loss in those trials, which helps explain the intense demand.
“GLP-3” is not an official regulatory class or an approved product name. It is informal internet shorthand sometimes used for newer multi-hormone drugs. Calling a vial “GLP-3” does not establish what molecule it contains, how much is present or whether it was made under pharmaceutical quality controls.

Results from Lilly’s trial material cannot be transferred to an unknown vial bought online. Trial investigators know the product’s identity, dose, manufacturing conditions and storage history. A black-market seller may provide none of those assurances.
Why the black market is expanding
Lilly says illegal imports, foreign manufacturing, online and social-media advertising, medical spas and wellness clinics are being used to market retatrutide. “Research use only” wording is frequently displayed even when the surrounding sales pitch clearly encourages injections for weight loss. That label does not make human use lawful or safe.
On August 12, 2026, Lilly said it had filed six lawsuits, referred more than 200 individuals and entities to authorities, and identified more than 14,000 websites, advertisements, social posts and product listings in more than 100 countries. Those are Lilly’s enforcement figures, not an independent count of every seller or vial in circulation.

“What is being sold on the black market is not a medicine – it is entirely unverified, unapproved and not worth the risk,” Lilly chief medical officer David A. Hyman, M.D., said.
What is known about the reported deaths
CBS reported two FDA adverse-event reports involving people who obtained products described as retatrutide. CBS could not independently verify the reports, and the FDA did not say whether it had verified them. An adverse-event report is an allegation submitted for investigation; it does not by itself prove that retatrutide, or the labeled product, caused a death.
Report involving a 41-year-old woman
One report described a 41-year-old woman who developed a dangerously fast heartbeat. Resuscitation attempts failed. The report does not establish the product’s actual contents, dose, contamination status or whether another medical cause contributed.

Report involving a 49-year-old patient
A second report described a 49-year-old patient who obtained a product through a registered nurse, then experienced severe dehydration, malnutrition and cardiac arrest. Again, the report is not a confirmed causation finding.
Lilly said it had found suspect products with incorrect or contaminated contents. Harvard Medical School associate professor Pieter Cohen said regulators should obtain and analyze the actual material injected in both cases: “The FDA should do whatever it possibly could do to get their hands on the actual drug that was injected by both of these patients, and get that analyzed.”
Poison-center reports are rising
America’s Poison Centers logged 862 reported exposures in July through September 2026. That compares with 460 in the preceding quarter and 249 in the first quarter. These figures count reports received by poison centers; they are not confirmed poisoning diagnoses, a measure of all use, or an estimate of how common black-market retatrutide is.

The FDA warning reproduced by Lilly captures the central problem: research-use-only products “are of unknown quality and may be harmful to [consumers’] health.”

With an unregulated product, the risk is not limited to an unexpectedly strong dose. Laboratory testing may reveal too much active ingredient, too little, no retatrutide at all, a different drug, bacterial contamination, particulates or chemical impurities. A damaged or warm shipment can further compromise a product that requires controlled handling.
There is also no approved retatrutide label defining contraindications, dosing instructions, interactions, storage requirements or a final post-approval safety profile. Those gaps make it impossible to apply the protections that accompany a reviewed medicine.

How to recognize an unsafe seller
Do not treat a professional-looking website, a clinician’s title or a “research” disclaimer as proof of legitimacy. FDA guidance identifies several warning signs:
- The seller does not require a prescription from a licensed clinician who evaluates you.
- The seller claims the product is identical to an approved medicine.
- The price is implausibly low or presented as a pressure-driven “limited” deal.
- Medication arrives warm, damaged or without verifiable handling information.
- The label contains spelling errors, a questionable pharmacy address or other basic inconsistencies.
A seller that offers a compound or peptide for self-injection outside a state-licensed pharmacy is not providing the regulated pathway used for approved medicines. Do not buy or inject such a product.
What regulated treatment provides instead
FDA-reviewed medicines are evaluated for safety, effectiveness and quality. A lawful prescription pathway also gives you clinical supervision, documented ingredient identity and dose, manufacturing and sterility controls, appropriate shipping conditions and a route for reporting adverse events.

If you already used a research-use-only product
- Stop using the product and keep the vial, packaging and order records for clinicians or investigators. Do not attempt to test, dilute or “correct” it yourself.
- Contact a healthcare professional promptly, even if you currently feel well, and disclose exactly what the label said and when you used it.
- For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms—such as trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, persistent vomiting or signs of severe dehydration—call emergency services immediately.
- Report suspected adverse events or product-quality problems to the FDA through MedWatch. Include photographs of labels and lot information when available.
The safest route for weight-loss treatment is a prescription from a doctor filled through a state-licensed pharmacy. Retatrutide’s investigational status, the unverified composition of illicit products and the unresolved death reports make online “research” vials a risk that clinical-trial headlines cannot justify.
