1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore accepting a U.S. retail job, get the pay, expected hours, schedule, and benefits in writing. Then compare the whole package with your priorities and local alternatives: an hourly rate alone does not show how much income you can count on or what coverage and time off are worth to you.
Start by defining what matters to you
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Workshop guide to evaluating a job offer suggests asking: “What are the key factors to you in accepting a job offer?” and “What terms of the job offer are important to you?” Decide whether any terms are non-negotiable—for example, minimum dependable hours, a particular shift, affordable health coverage, or paid leave.

The guide’s practical principle is: “When reviewing a job offer, consider the entire package, not just salary.” Ask for the proposed terms by email and take time to review them. The guide also advises: “Do not make decisions or accept offers on the spot.”

Check how pay is calculated
Get the components and assumptions
Ask the employer to state the base hourly wage or salary, any commission or bonus formula, the expected weekly hours, and how overtime is treated. If part of your pay depends on sales or targets, ask how the formula works and what conditions must be met. Build your comparison around expected dependable earnings, not a best-case bonus or hours you have not been promised.

Use wage benchmarks carefully
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported a national median hourly wage of $17.03 for retail salespersons in May 2025. Its profile also reported $18.57 for parts salespersons. Retail salespersons’ May 2025 median varied by industry, including $17.82 in building material and garden equipment retailers and $16.43 in clothing, clothing accessories, shoe, and jewelry retailers. These are national occupational statistics, not a guaranteed rate or a local offer target; compare similar roles in your area where possible. The BLS figures include tips, sales commissions, and bonuses for meeting production targets, but exclude premium pay such as overtime and shift differentials. See the BLS retail sales workers profile.
The federal minimum wage for covered workers is $7.25 an hour, according to current U.S. Department of Labor guidance accessed October 4, 2026. Where both federal and state minimum-wage laws apply, the worker is entitled to the higher minimum. This is a federal baseline, not an estimate of prevailing retail pay or a substitute for checking the rules where you will work. See the Department of Labor’s wages guidance.

Clarify overtime rather than relying on the job title
Covered, nonexempt employees generally must receive at least one and one-half times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Retail-specific exceptions exist, including for some commission-paid retail or service employees. Whether an exception applies depends on the qualifying conditions and the actual job and pay arrangement—not simply the word “retail” in a title. Check the Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet #6: Retail Industry Under the FLSA, and ask how the employer classifies the position and calculates overtime.
Find out how dependable the schedule is
Retail shifts may include evenings and weekends, and hours can change during holiday or other peak periods. Ask specific questions before treating an advertised schedule as reliable:

Include shift timing and schedule predictability in your decision, especially if you depend on a steady income or have care, school, or transportation commitments.
Read the health-plan terms, not just the label
“Health insurance available” does not tell you what it will cost or cover. Ask when you can enroll and request the plan information for the coverage tier you would use. Check:

- What you pay from each paycheck, and whether the quoted amount is for individual or dependent coverage.
- The deductible and copayments.
- Which doctors and facilities are in the network.
- How prescription medicines are covered.
Compare the actual plan terms with your needs rather than assigning a value based only on the fact that a plan is offered. The Department of Labor’s job-offer guide recommends reviewing benefit details.
Understand paid leave and holidays
Ask whether vacation and sick time are separate or combined into one paid-time-off bank, how leave accrues, when you may use it, and what happens to unused hours. Find out whether paid holidays are offered and which holidays qualify. A stated annual allowance may accrue over time rather than being available immediately.

Federal Fair Labor Standards Act rules do not require employers to provide vacation, sick leave, or holiday pay. State or local laws and employer policies may provide for them, so check the rules that apply at the work location. The Department of Labor’s wage and leave guidance describes the federal baseline.
Check retirement eligibility and vesting
Ask whether the retirement plan covers your position and when you become eligible. Clarify whether you need to contribute to receive an employer match or contribution, how that contribution is calculated, and when employer contributions become vested. A plan being available does not necessarily mean you are eligible immediately or that you already own all employer contributions. The BLS National Compensation Survey glossary distinguishes access to a benefit from participation and defines defined-benefit and defined-contribution plans.
Ask about other perks and their conditions
Confirm whether the employer actually offers education assistance, employee discounts, transportation support, bonuses, or other benefits—and who qualifies. Ask about deadlines, service commitments, repayment requirements, or completion conditions. Do not assume every perk is tax-free: the IRS says many fringe benefits are generally included in gross income, subject to exceptions. See the IRS employee benefits guidance.
Compare offers using the same checklist
Put each offer side by side and compare the terms you have confirmed, not assumptions. The Department of Labor recommends evaluating the whole package and making an acceptable/unacceptable checklist. A useful comparison includes:
- Dependable pay: expected earnings after predictable deductions, based on the hours you can reasonably count on.
- Time and schedule: weekly hours, shift timing, notice, flexibility, and seasonal changes.
- Health coverage: your cost for the relevant tier and the coverage details you need.
- Leave: accrual, when leave can be used, holidays, and treatment of unused hours.
- Retirement: eligibility, employer contribution, and vesting.
- Fit: commute, opportunities to grow, and your non-negotiables.
Do not assign a dollar value to a benefit until you have the terms needed to judge it. An offer cannot be called competitive from a national wage figure alone: the role, work location, actual hours, worker classification, employer policies, and plan documents all matter. Federal rules set a baseline, while state and local protections may add requirements.
