A four-version test reported by ResuHive used constructed resumes and a constructed job posting in its own parser; it is a demonstration, not an industry-wide benchmark. For your resume, use a clear “Skills” heading, list only relevant abilities you can support, and show how you used key skills in experience or project bullets.
What the four-version ATS test actually shows
ResuHive reported testing four versions of one resume with its own ATS parser. The accessible description says that two versions that looked very different received the same score. The resumes and job posting were created for the test, not drawn from a real application. ResuHive characterized the results as a demonstration of the mechanism rather than an industry benchmark. That evidence does not establish which four designs were tested, the scores, or the parser methodology. It also cannot show how other ATS products or employer configurations behave. Treat the test as a reason not to assume that visual differences necessarily change a parser result—not as proof that a particular skills-section design wins.

What belongs in a resume skills section?
Choose skills that are relevant to the role and accurately describe your experience. Read the job posting for recurring terms, then use those terms where they truthfully fit your background. UT Austin Career Services recommends tailoring a resume to each job and incorporating repeated keywords that match the applicant’s experience. UT Austin Career Services
#1 Best Overall
Keep the list focused and readable. There is no universal ideal number of skills established by the sources here. A long inventory of loosely related terms can make it harder for a person to understand what you can actually do; matching a posting does not make an unsupported skill claim accurate.
Use a clear heading and a simple layout
“Skills” and “Technical Skills” are conventional labels recommended in career-services and employer guidance. A standard heading is an uncomplicated way to make the section recognizable to both readers and parsing software. CareerOneStop resume guidance Roche Careers resume guidance
Rank #2
CareerOneStop and Roche recommend simple formatting, including a single-column layout. Tables, text boxes, columns, images, and graphics can make reading order less clear or cause parsing problems. ATS products differ, so straightforward formatting reduces avoidable ambiguity but does not guarantee selection.

Back up important skills with evidence
A skills list names capabilities; experience and project descriptions show how you applied them. UMSL Career Services notes that keywords in work experience can carry more relevance because they appear in context. Pair important skills with concise, specific examples in the roles or projects where you used them. UMSL Career Services resume guidance
For example, listing a relevant tool or method is more persuasive when an experience bullet explains the task you used it for and the result, where you can accurately state one. Do not rely on a bare list to make every qualification credible.
Avoid keyword stuffing and hidden text
Use the employer’s language when it genuinely describes your skills, but do not copy terms into the resume just to match a posting. The University of Victoria advises matching job-posting language without overstuffing and cautions against hidden content. Hidden keywords do not help a recruiter assess your qualifications if your resume reaches human review. University of Victoria Career Services resume guidance

File-format recommendations are not universal. Roche says DOCX is parsed most accurately by its systems while PDF preserves formatting; CareerOneStop advises PDF unless the employer requests another format. Follow the specific application instructions rather than treating either recommendation as a rule for every employer. Roche Careers resume guidance CareerOneStop resume guidance
After saving, inspect the document as submitted and, when possible, check its extracted text. UMSL recommends checking for text corruption. Confirm that headings, skills, and work history appear in a sensible order and remain legible.
How to make the section useful to both ATS software and people
- Read the target job posting. Note recurring qualifications and terms that fit your actual experience.
- Add a conventional heading. Use “Skills” or, where appropriate, “Technical Skills.”
- Keep the layout simple. Use a clear, single-column structure and ordinary text rather than decorative elements that may disrupt reading order.
- Connect skills to evidence. Demonstrate important capabilities in experience or project bullets.
- Follow upload instructions and inspect the result. Use the requested file type, then check that the submitted document’s text is readable and ordered correctly.
ATS parsing and employer workflows vary. Roche, for example, describes parsing as assisting application completion and potentially suggesting matches, while recruiters and managers review applicants and attached CVs. That is Roche’s process, not a description of every employer’s system. Roche Careers resume guidance
