Restream Alternatives for Streaming Prerecorded Videos to YouTube

Restream is still a good fit for scheduled, finite prerecorded broadcasts, but it is not an indefinite 24/7 loop service. For a one-off event, its hosted upload and scheduling workflow can be convenient. For a local, repeatable playlist, OBS Studio gives you control while your computer is running. For continuous YouTube playout without a home computer, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it loops uploaded videos, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Choose an alternative by the kind of broadcast you need

Need Best-fit approach What to know
A scheduled, finite event or playlist Restream Upload & Stream Uploads and schedules prerecorded video to air automatically. Its video loop is capped; playlists do not natively loop.
Local playback with hands-on control OBS Studio Media Source can loop one file; VLC Video can play and loop an ordered playlist. The computer, encoder, power, and internet connection remain part of the setup.
Continuous, unattended YouTube playout from uploaded videos StreamNeo Cloud looping means your home computer does not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
Dedicated hardware playout AJA HELO Plus YouTube’s encoder directory describes its optional PlayToStream feature for scheduling prerecorded media without a computer. It is specialist hardware, not a general requirement.

These are different workflows, not interchangeable products. Restream and OBS address finite events and local operation; a cloud service or dedicated encoder is more relevant when playback must continue without a general-purpose computer. YouTube lists Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video, but that directory entry alone does not establish its uploaded-video support, loop controls, limits, or price. YouTube lists StreamYard as a browser-based live streaming and podcast studio; the cited materials do not establish it as a looped-video or unattended playout replacement.

Restream: suitable for scheduled events, with finite limits

Restream’s Upload & Stream workflow lets you select or upload a video, set event details and a date and time, choose distribution channels, and have the video air automatically. YouTube supports advance event posts, so viewers can find an event before it starts. Restream’s documented capacity depends on the selected add-on tier; the current help page lists these limits:

Restream tier Video library Maximum resolution listed Looping
Premier 2 hours 1080p Not listed as available
Marathon 4 hours 1080p Available
Media 12 hours 4K Available

These are Restream help-page plan details and may change; check the current plan page before choosing a tier. Restream documents a single uploaded video or stream recording looping up to 10 plays, with a maximum total stream length of 40 hours. That is a bounded repeat, not an endless 24/7 broadcast. Its playlists can be up to 24 hours long and contain up to 40 videos; the documented playlist feature requires Marathon or Media. Playlists can be scheduled and previewed, but videos can only be added, removed, or reordered before the playlist goes live. They do not natively repeat. Restream suggests duplicating videos within the 40-item limit to approximate a repeated sequence, which still does not create an indefinite playlist loop.

Restream’s prerecorded-video guide, video-looping limits, and playlist documentation explain the current workflows and limits. Use Restream when you want a scheduled, bounded event and its hosted upload workflow; look elsewhere if the requirement is an endlessly repeating playlist.

OBS Studio: loop a video or playlist from your computer

OBS is a free, local encoder workflow rather than a hosted event service. Its Media Source supports formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM and includes a Loop option. For an ordered playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source provides a Loop Playlist setting; VLC must be installed for that source to appear. The exact menus can vary slightly by OBS version, so confirm the labels in your installed build.

  1. Make sure the YouTube channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enable live streaming in advance if needed and allow for any eligibility activation time YouTube presents.
  2. Create or select the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, use Create → Go live, then set up the stream or schedule the event. Copy the stream key from the event’s stream settings; treat it as a password and do not share it.
  3. Add your media in OBS. Create a scene, then add Sources → + → Media Source for a single file and enable Loop. For a playlist, install VLC, add Sources → + → VLC Video Source, add files in the intended order, and enable Loop Playlist.
  4. Configure the stream connection. In Settings → Stream, select YouTube or a custom RTMPS service as appropriate for your OBS version, then enter the server and stream key shown by YouTube. Do not publish the key or embed it in a public screenshot.
  5. Set output to match the source and YouTube recommendations. In Settings → Output, choose a supported H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 encoder if available and set a bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current chart. In Settings → Video, set the base canvas and output resolution to the intended stream size and choose a frame rate the computer can encode steadily. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds (YouTube’s stated maximum is 4 seconds). Use RTMPS where available.
  6. Check audio and video before going public. Start the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, verify that the correct scene is visible and audio is present at a sensible level, then start the event in YouTube Studio if the event requires that separate action. Monitor dropped frames, audio, and the live preview throughout the broadcast.
  7. Stop deliberately. End the stream in YouTube Studio and stop the OBS encoder after the event. For a long-running loop, plan for someone to monitor the machine, power, network, and OBS rather than assuming a local setup will recover unattended.

YouTube’s recommended bitrates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use its current live encoder settings rather than applying one number to every source. Its live streaming guidance also recommends advance setup, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video. OBS’s media-source documentation describes the file and playlist controls. A loop in OBS only continues while the local computer and encoder are running; the cited guidance does not establish OBS as a cloud scheduler or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Dedicated hardware: AJA HELO Plus

YouTube’s encoder directory describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder for direct YouTube Live streaming. It specifically says the optional PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media and stream it to YouTube Live without a computer; the listing also mentions built-in graphics and remote monitoring. This may suit someone with a recurring unattended playout need who prefers dedicated equipment over a general-purpose PC.

It is not necessary just to stream prerecorded video: YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” The directory listing does not establish current price, stock, firmware status, or suitability for every consumer setup. Check the manufacturer and retailer details before purchase. See YouTube’s encoder directory.

YouTube requirements that apply whichever method you choose

  • Channel eligibility: verify the channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days before planning an event.
  • Copyright and permissions: use video, music, artwork, and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it contains material that violates YouTube rules; looping a recording does not grant rights to it.
  • Reused content and monetization: permission to stream a video and eligibility to monetize a channel are separate questions. Repetitive or reused programming may affect monetization review; do not assume that an always-on stream or a playlist alone qualifies for monetization.
  • Stream settings: match resolution and frame rate to the source and encoder capacity, follow YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, use a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and prefer RTMPS.
  • Event operation: set up ahead of time, test the event preview, monitor audio and video, and stop the encoder after the event when using a finite broadcast workflow.

See YouTube’s live streaming help and encoder settings for current requirements. YouTube policies and encoder recommendations can change, so check them before a scheduled broadcast.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube does not offer the live event or rejects the stream Channel verification, live activation, or a current restriction is unresolved Check YouTube Studio eligibility and resolve restrictions before the event date.
OBS stream connects, but YouTube preview is blank or wrong Wrong scene/source, file path issue, unsupported media, or incorrect event key Confirm the active scene, open the media locally, check source properties, and re-copy the key from the intended YouTube event.
Playlist source is missing in OBS VLC is not installed Install VLC, restart OBS, and add the VLC Video source again.
OBS drops frames or the stream stutters Encoder load, bitrate mismatch, or unstable network Lower output resolution or frame rate, select an encoder your system can sustain, and set bitrate according to YouTube’s chart and the available upload connection.
Video plays but viewers cannot hear it Source audio disabled, muted mixer channel, or audio routed incorrectly Check the source’s audio properties and OBS mixer meters, then confirm sound in YouTube’s preview before publishing.
Restream playlist ends instead of repeating Restream playlists do not natively loop For a finite event, duplicate entries within the 40-video limit; for continuous repetition, use a tool that explicitly supports a continuous loop.
A Restream video stops after repeated plays The documented loop has a 10-play and 40-hour maximum Schedule another finite event or move to a workflow designed for continuous playout.
A local loop stops unexpectedly Computer sleep, power loss, application failure, or internet interruption Disable sleep for the broadcast period, maintain stable power and connectivity, monitor OBS, and have a restart plan.
