You can restore WhatsApp messages on a Samsung phone from a Google Account backup during WhatsApp setup, or transfer chats directly from an old Android phone that still works. The right option depends on what you can access: a usable backup, the old phone, or both. Check your Google Account and phone number before setup, and keep the old phone’s data until you have confirmed the chats on the Samsung.

Samsung’s Smart Switch is not a way to move Android WhatsApp chat history: it may transfer the app, but not its chats and media. Samsung documents this limitation in its Galaxy WhatsApp backup and restore guidance and Smart Switch troubleshooting guidance.

Restore a Google Account backup on your Samsung
WhatsApp’s restore prompt appears during initial setup, after you verify the phone number associated with the backup. There is no restore control in the Chat Backup settings screen. WhatsApp says chat history is not stored on its servers, so the backup or a transfer from the old phone is essential. See WhatsApp’s guidance on restoring chat history.

- Confirm the backup account and number. On the old phone, check which Google Account was used for the WhatsApp backup and which phone number was registered. The backup is associated with both. If you can still access the old phone, check the backup information before removing WhatsApp or resetting the phone.
- Prepare the Samsung. Add and sign in to the same Google Account, install WhatsApp, and make sure the phone has a stable internet connection and enough free space. Google Play services must be installed. WhatsApp’s backup and restore troubleshooting guidance lists these as relevant checks.
- Verify the matching number. Open WhatsApp and register the phone number used for the backup. If the number does not match, WhatsApp may not find the backup.
- Choose Restore when prompted. Follow WhatsApp’s setup prompt to restore the backup, then leave the app open and allow the process to finish. The chats available are limited to what was in the latest successful backup.
WhatsApp says a new Google Account backup replaces the previous backup for that number, and an older one cannot be restored. Backups not updated for five months might also be automatically deleted by Google. Check the account and backup status before relying on it; see About Google Account backups.

Transfer chats directly from an old Android phone
If the old Android phone still works, direct Chat Transfer can move chats to the Samsung without relying on a Google Account backup. WhatsApp requires Android 6 or later on both phones, the same phone number, Wi-Fi enabled, nearby phones, and both devices connected to power. They do not need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network. The new phone must not already be registered on WhatsApp when migration starts.
- Prepare both phones. Keep them close together, connect each to power, and enable Wi-Fi. Keep the old phone’s WhatsApp data intact.
- Start transfer on the old phone. In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Chats > Transfer chats > Start.
- Begin setup on the Samsung. Install and open WhatsApp, register the same phone number, and select Transfer from old phone when offered.
- Scan the QR code. Use the old phone to scan the code displayed on the Samsung, then follow the in-app instructions.
- Keep both phones unlocked and WhatsApp open. Wait for the transfer to finish, then check the chats on the Samsung before erasing, trading in, or resetting the old phone.
Direct transfer does not move peer-to-peer payment messages or media received over Channels, and WhatsApp says it is not available for WhatsApp Business. Read WhatsApp’s chat transfer instructions for the current requirements.

If you changed your phone number
A WhatsApp backup remains tied to the number that created it. If you still have the old phone and can access the old account, WhatsApp’s recommended sequence is to change the number on that phone first, make a backup using the new number, then install WhatsApp on the Samsung, register the new number, and restore.

Fix a missing restore prompt or failed restore
Work through these checks before reinstalling WhatsApp. Reinstalling can be necessary if the setup prompt was skipped, but first confirm that the wanted chats still exist on the old phone or that another recovery path is available.
- No backup appears: Check that the Samsung is signed into the Google Account used for the backup and that WhatsApp is verified with its associated phone number.
- Restore stalls or fails: Check free space on the device and in the Google Account, confirm a stable connection and Google Play services, and make sure the phone is charged. WhatsApp also suggests restarting the device, checking Google Account sign-in and sync, force-stopping WhatsApp, and checking app permissions.
- Backup is too large for available space: If you can still use the old phone, reduce the backup size where possible before trying again.
- The restore prompt was missed: WhatsApp offers restoration during initial setup. Reinstalling may bring setup back, but only proceed after checking the old phone and any available direct transfer option.
- Troubleshooting does not help: WhatsApp says a backup may be corrupted and that it cannot restore a corrupted backup or determine its cause.

What each method can and cannot recover
A Google Account restore recovers the content in the latest successful backup; it cannot retrieve an earlier Google backup after a newer one replaces it. Direct transfer can avoid dependence on that cloud backup, but it requires the old phone and excludes certain content. Smart Switch does not transfer Android WhatsApp chat and media data. If neither a usable backup nor the old phone is available, WhatsApp says it cannot retrieve chat history from its servers.
