Windows Central reviewer Michael Hoglund praised its pacing, polished swordplay, environments and substantial links to the series’ lore, while noting that some puzzles are simple and traversal can feel constrained. His review supports calling it a strong prequel—not a proven improvement for every fan or platform.
What is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a prequel in the A Plague Tale universe, centered on a young Sophia. Her childhood includes injections and recurring dreams of a mysterious island; first her father, then Sophia, pursue the reason behind those visions. The island’s story draws on the Greek Minotaur myth, Daedalus’s contraptions and Minoan civilization, while connecting them to the series’ Prima Macula lore. Linked sequences let Sophia glimpse Theseus’s past.

Hoglund’s review argues that these connections are substantial enough to make the prequel matter to the wider series, rather than serving as an unrelated side story. He describes a campaign spanning “10+ chapters.” For the release and platform details, Focus Entertainment announced the game’s August 27, 2026 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Asobo Studio identifies itself as developer and Focus Entertainment Publishing as publisher.

This is a shift in emphasis, not evidence that the earlier games’ stealth identity has disappeared. The review’s clearest case for choosing Legacy is its sword combat and renewed pace; it does not establish that every player who preferred the stealth focus of Innocence or Requiem will prefer the change.

Is the combat and puzzle design good?
Sword combat gives Sophia a more active role
Sophia can block attacks, time parries, fill an enemy’s stun meter and land Critical Strikes. Hoglund says the combat feels responsive and intuitive throughout the campaign. That makes this the clearest mechanical departure from the earlier games’ emphasis on avoiding or disabling guards with stones.
Puzzles add tools, but guidance is uneven
Directional lighting and mirrors broaden the puzzle vocabulary, with environmental clues and Sophia’s notebook helping players work through obstacles. The review says the mechanics develop over time, but some puzzles were too straightforward. The notebook’s instructions could also feel inconsistent: at times optional, at others seemingly necessary.

Movement is a weaker point
The reviewer found rope-hook interactions and climbing static and restrictive. If free-form traversal is a priority, the review offers less reason to expect a major advance over the series’ guided movement style.
Does the story justify a prequel?
Hoglund’s answer is yes: Sophia’s island mystery intersects with the series’ mythology in a way he considered meaningful. The review also praises the emotional narrative, the use of Greek myth and the relationship between Sophia’s story and the wider lore. Its chief narrative reservation is that some hostile enemies appear in places that seem sealed or otherwise inaccessible, which can undermine the scene’s logic.

The reviewer’s pacing verdict was emphatic: “The pacing of Resonance never once felt dull, not even for a moment.” That is his assessment of the campaign, not a guarantee that its tempo will suit every player.
What does the PC performance report actually show?
Hoglund describes his own PC experience, not a controlled benchmark. He played at Ultra settings with DLSS set to Quality or Balanced on two systems: a laptop with an RTX 4060 mobile GPU at 1080p, and a desktop with an RTX 5080, Ryzen 7 9800X3D and 64 GB of CL30 DDR5 RAM at 4K. He does not recall seeing performance below 60 fps and says play often exceeded 100 fps when using frame generation. Those observations are tied to his hardware, settings and play sessions; they are not independently reproducible results or a promise for other PCs.

Hoglund praised the visual detail and presentation on a 4K OLED screen but cautioned that native 4K at Ultra settings is demanding. His review does not establish what performance to expect on a particular graphics card or with frame generation disabled.

He did not test the Xbox version. He wrote that he had been told it targets 60 fps with dynamic 4K resolution; that is secondhand information in the review, not a firsthand measurement or an independently verified specification. The review provides no comparable hands-on console performance findings for PS5.

Who should play it?
- Consider it if you want a story-led adventure with striking environments, deliberate puzzles, tense stretches and a more active melee system.
- Be more cautious if you mainly want complex puzzles, flexible climbing or an experience focused on stealth over combat; those are precisely the areas where the review identifies limitations or a changed emphasis.
- Check your platform expectations before deciding based on frame-rate claims. The PC comments describe one reviewer’s two setups, and his Xbox comment was not based on testing that version.
