To resize an image for Instagram, choose its placement first, then set a matching frame: Buffer recommends 1080 × 1080 pixels for a square feed post, 1080 × 1350 for portrait, 1080 × 566 for landscape, and 1080 × 1920 for a Story or Reel. Use crop-to-fill when trimming the edges is acceptable; use fit or borders when you need to preserve the whole image. These are Buffer’s recommendations, not a verified statement of Instagram’s current official upload rules.
Buffer’s free Instagram image resizer works in a browser. Buffer says images are resized on your device, and the first five images can be resized without an account. Its tool accepts JPEG, PNG, and WebP files up to 10 MB; check the current page for its latest tool details.

Choose a size based on where the image will appear
The dimensions below are recommendations published by Buffer. They are useful target frames for preparing an image, but should not be treated as a complete or independently verified list of Instagram’s current upload requirements.

The 3:4 feed option and profile-grid preview guidance come from Buffer’s Instagram size guide dated March 17, 2026. Buffer says profile-grid previews display at 3:4, so keep key content near the center if it needs to remain visible there.

Resize an existing image without losing the important parts
- Identify the placement. Decide whether the file is for a feed post, Story, or Reel. A target frame for one placement may not suit another.
- Pick the target ratio before resizing. Use the table above as Buffer’s recommended targets, and compose around the subject rather than choosing a size at random.
- Choose crop or fit. Crop-to-fill uses the frame fully but removes some content at the edges. Fit preserves the full original image, often leaving empty space that you can keep or replace with a border treatment.
- Inspect the result at the target shape. Check that faces, text, and other important details remain inside the crop. For a 3:4 feed image, check the profile-grid preview as well.
- Download and review the finished file. Open it before publishing to confirm the crop, orientation, and legibility.
Resizing gives you more control over framing before upload. The cited guidance does not establish that resizing prevents Instagram compression or guarantees a universal improvement in image quality.
Crop-to-fill or fit with borders?
- Crop-to-fill: Choose this when the subject can tolerate edge loss and you want the image to occupy the whole frame. Review the edges before saving; a person, caption, or product detail near an edge can be cut off.
- Fit with borders: Choose this when showing the entire original matters more than filling every part of the target frame. The trade-off is visible empty space around the image.
For either treatment, prioritize the placement and the important content. A size recommendation is a target canvas, not a reason to cut off information the viewer needs.

What the resizer’s limits do—and do not—mean
Buffer’s resizer page lists JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC as accepted formats, an 8 MB maximum, image widths from 320 to 1440 pixels, a minimum image size of 150 × 150 pixels, and aspect ratios from 4:5 to 1.91:1 or square. The same page’s tool description separately says it handles JPEG, PNG, and WebP inputs up to 10 MB. Because the page gives different file-format and file-size details in these contexts, check the live tool interface before relying on a limit.

It lists an 8 MB limit and supports ratios from 3:4 to 1.91:1 or square. Its lower portrait-ratio guidance therefore differs from the resizer page’s 4:5 figure. These are Buffer tool and API statements, not a single universal rule for native Instagram uploads. Instagram’s current official requirements were not independently verified for this guide.

For Buffer API publishing, Buffer Support says the API supports sRGB and recommends saving in sRGB to reduce color shifts. It also says Buffer converts files over 8 MB for publishing. Those notes apply to Buffer’s publishing guidance, not necessarily to other upload paths. See Buffer’s image size and format support article.

If you publish a carousel through Buffer, its support guidance says the first selected photo or video sets the crop standard for the rest. Choose that first item with the sequence’s framing in mind. This detail is specific to Buffer’s API publishing workflow; do not assume it describes every way of posting natively in Instagram.
